What is our primary use case?
I have only been doing business improvement work, so not so much around utilization of solutions. I use business process mapping tools. I use
SmartDraw and
Visio. I do process mapping and business process improvement work, using
Visio to document the work I do. I use mind mapping, process mapping, multi-level process mapping, and swimlane process mapping. I use it standalone, so I'm not really integrating it with anything else.
I generally don't use templates. I generally start with a blank map because I know what I want to do, since I've probably already drawn the map while observing processes and writing them down. Then I come and document them digitally on Visio. I start with a blank map and develop it from there.
How has it helped my organization?
It's good because you can be looking at something and developing it together. When I'm working with people who are on different time zones, we can pass things back and forth and work on them together.
What is most valuable?
Visio is powerful and a fully-featured, functional piece of software. I'm not thinking about the company; I'm thinking about what I need to do, and it's fully capable. It's a fully-featured, powerful tool. I'm happy to use it as it is, so I'm not asking for it to do anything different. Perhaps integration with
Jira or
ClickUp would be valuable, but I don't know whether it does or doesn't at this moment in time.
What needs improvement?
I would have said the pricing, but the pricing is fine now, so it's a good tool and a powerful one. When you know how to use it, it's very intuitive. People who don't know how to use it might want it to do different things, but I've used it a lot, so I don't ask for anything from it because it provides everything I need and I know how to work around it as well.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have five to seven years of experience with Visio.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Visio has always been fine for me.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Not really. It's pretty easy to follow.
How are customer service and support?
It's good. I haven't had any problems with that.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I had used
SmartDraw. I used Visio first in another organization, but then when I left, I used SmartDraw because of the prohibitive cost of Visio. I was looking at starting a job that used those products, but I don't end up doing that.
How was the initial setup?
Visio used to be very expensive, but Microsoft made it significantly more affordable, when it was a couple thousand dollars and prohibitively expensive. When Microsoft went across their whole suite and made everything more accessible on yearly subscriptions, that helped a lot to make it more accessible.
What was our ROI?
I haven't looked for ROI. That's not where I'm helping save money for organizations. It's the work that I'm putting through Visio that helps save the money.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing is reasonable now. Whereas before, I had used it when it was paid for by my work, but then as I moved to different projects, I wasn't paying $2,000 to have it. Visio is supplied by the company I work with. When SmartDraw was so much cheaper, I used that for many years. Then I only started using Visio again when it was prescribed by a company that I was working with, and I realized that the pricing had changed on it completely.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I'm always going to use what the organization uses.
What other advice do I have?
I give this review a rating of 9 out of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
