What are compute instance types?

A compute instance can be software or hardware that can run code. It can be, for example, a CPU, GPU, or a virtual machine.

Instance types provide different combinations of memory, CPU, storage, and networking capacity and can be used to create an instance that matches your app's needs. Each instance type includes one or more instances, allowing you to scale your deployments to suit the requirements of your workload.

The instance types can be broadly classified into these five categories:

  1. General purpose instance types: General purpose instances give you the freedom to create a variety of diverse workloads, and they come with enough compute, memory and networking resources that you won't have to worry about anything. These instances are great for applications that rely on multitasking, like web servers and code repositories.
  2. Compute-optimized instance types: Compute-optimized instances are perfect for running compute-bound applications, as they come equipped with high-performance processors. Compute-optimized instances can be well suited to many different tasks, such as batch processing and media transcoding. They can also offer high performance capabilities in areas like HPC, scientific modeling, and machine learning inference.
  3. Memory-optimized instance types: Memory optimized instances are designed to provide fast, optimized performance when running workloads that process large data sets in memory.
  4. Storage-optimized instance types: Storage-optimized instances are perfect for heavy workloads that require high sequential read and write access to megabytes of data on local storage. They deliver tens of thousands of low-latency random I/O operations per second (IOPS) to applications.
  5. Accelerated computing instance types: Accelerated computing instances use hardware accelerators for speeding up computers. These accelerators, also called co-processors, run alongside the CPU and get better performance when used for specific tasks like floating point number calculations, graphics processing, or data pattern matching.
What are compute shape types?

A compute shape is a template for how the number of CPUs, amount of memory, and other resources are allocated to an instance.

There are three different types of compute shapes:

  • Burstable compute is for applications that require high levels of performance for a short period of time, and then require little to no resource usage afterwards.
  • On-demand compute is for applications that require consistent resource usage throughout the day, week, or month.
  • Reserved compute is for applications that require guaranteed, dedicated resource usage.
What are compute capacity types?

There are two types of compute capacity that you can utilize when renting out servers: dedicated and shared. Dedicated is when an individual or organization rents out an entire server to use for their project or needs. Shared is when multiple individuals or organizations share a single server and split the costs of using it.

What are the benefits of a dedicated server? You will not share resources with other users, so you have full control over your server. You have access to additional hardware information like processor speed, RAM, and hard drive space. Since you are leasing an entire machine, you can ensure that it is always available for your needs.

What are the benefits of a shared server? You can use fewer resources when compared to running your own dedicated server. You have access to additional software and technical support from an admin. You can have a designated set of users for which the machine is pre-configured.

What are best practices for compute instances?

Best practices for compute instances include:

  • Evaluate how many cores and how much RAM are needed.
  • Make sure that the instance has enough storage space, especially if your application is running in a virtual environment. This will ensure that your machine won’t run out of space halfway through the month.
  • Figure out if there are any restrictions on what I can do with the compute instances, such as only running specific applications or using a particular OS?

Compute management is the process of configuring and maintaining compute resources to ensure that they are always able to provide the optimum level of service. Compute management covers a wide range of activities, from deploying and managing compute resource infrastructure, to decommissioning old resources that are no longer in use, to increasing the computing capacity of an existing cluster when required.
