Q&A Highlights
Question: Which is better, Zscaler internet access or Netsckope CASB?
Answer: We researched Netskope but ultimately chose Zscaler. Netskope is a cloud access security broker that helps identify and manage cloud applications, protecting your sensitive data from exfiltration. It provides visibility of how all SaaS applications are used in your environment. It makes setting up policies easy, and it has special policies to protect integrated apps. It is difficult to scale up. The infrastructure tends to stall when trying to keep pace with high loads. Although it provides basic protection features like the interpretation of firewall logs, it shows the user access to apps. It shows issues comparing the reports with the firewall logs. Overall, it presents a simple approach to web traffic control. Zscaler, on the other hand, is a complete security stack as a service for the cloud. It is designed to reduce the complexity of traditional secure web gateway approaches. It provides scaled protection to users and entities. We use Zscaler and can say we like it very much. It provides secure internet with full encryption. It is easy to use, and you can easily monitor how your users and entities use SaaS applications. It also controls your bandwidth with a load balancer. So if you are looking for smooth internet access and secure connections across devices, it may be just the solution for you. The integration with MS365 is not the easiest, and it slows email uploading and downloading. However, we heard of other users that integrated Zscaler with Azure and were satisfied. We encountered a few issues, but the vendor solved them. There were some false positives and the setup could be easier. If you have a lot of users on mobile, it may not be the best option. Conclusions Zscaler is a superior solution for businesses of all sizes. Although the setup requires some expertise, it still provides a complete solution that offers good value for money.

Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Overall, it is a very good solution. It is a simple solution and very easy to set up.""Cisco Umbrella is such a solution and can be implemented very fast and easy. All that we must do is redirect the DNS registers in their routers, or the active directory service of the enterprise that are going to use in Umbrella services. If you buy the service now, in two hours you are protected by the service because it's very fast to put in service.""If it didn't have a single pane of glass, we would not be using it. The single pane of glass gives you a one-stop shop. It's like going to Home Depot. You find all your stuff there. You can see all your threats and your endpoints. It's a very important feature and makes things very simple.""I have found the malware protection feature valuable. It is helpful and deliverable and is able to protect my entire organization from getting compromised. It also prevents us from visiting any malicious sites which are not visible to the users.""The most valuable feature is the ability to block users from reaching places that they should not even try to reach has been a boon.""It is a good cloud-based solution for DNS security.""The Global Block List is one of the most valuable features because it's really easy to block domain names as well as URLs. Sometimes you don't want to block the whole site, you just want to block one URL. The Global Block and Allow Lists are the best features for us.""One of the most important features is the security posture check which Umbrella offers when a user accesses any website. That is one of the most unique features that it offers."

"The interface is good.""A very straightforward interface.""Their technical support is very good.""They are very good at CASB as compared to other players.""The initial setup of Netskope CASB is easy, it is not complex.""Technical support is pretty good.""Its deployment is very easy and quick. Their technical support is also very good.""The client size and architectural components in Netskope are far better than other solutions."

"The most valuable features I found in Zscaler Internet Access are the restriction of users for a particular URL, the security feature related to stopping DDoS, and the VPN.""Zscaler Internet Access's best feature is the granular policy controls.""The most valuable features of Zscaler Internet Access are it's on the cloud, high network performance, and the interception of users is very easy.""Zscaler Internet Access has helped us reduce the time that we spend managing security policies by about four hours a week. We can use this time to focus on other things, especially the IT team.""The most valuable feature of Zscaler Internet Access is that it is a consolidated solution, it comes with many features, such as DLP.""We don't have to buy equipment to use it. And when our engineers set it up on our side, we just configured a few settings and we were in.""For our needs, the cloud-native proxy architecture is a very good solution. We are moving away from on-prem appliances and moving more toward cloud-based solutions. Zscaler is a good fit for our strategy. This architecture helps with cyber threats because we inspect most of the traffic and we can see that a lot of threats are stopped directly in the secure web gateway.""Zscaler Internet Access protects using data loss prevention. If you have a CASB exposing your cloud out into the network, then Zscaler Internet Access will go ahead and control that unknown cloud application in the CASB, protecting it. There is also data detection with exact data match. This improves the data coming into your cloud so you are protecting it."

Cons
"It could be improved by having a local data center and caching, which can provide protection support. I would like to be able to channel my intel and my network traffic to their clouds, and this feature is not available. Advanced protection or any malware file support, which might be required, is not available.""Cisco Umbrella should introduce an on-premises device.""I would like them to make some videos, practical videos, the kind with steps that people can use to learn and deploy""If the security issues are taken care of it would be better.""Data reporting could be improved.""User interface could be a little smoother and more intuitive.""I think it's a very basic solution, and because of that, Cisco Umbrella would not be a suitable solution for large companies.""If we're trying to deploy it to a Mac through Meraki, it's impossible. The method of deployment for a Mac, and the features available in Meraki, are not compatible at all."

More Cisco Umbrella Cons →

"Deployment and policy tweaking were two areas where improvement needs to be made.""There should be some granular custom roles that are not available. However, this is on the road map. There are many devices that do not have the Zero Trust feature and other enhancements available which they should have.""The solution is still pretty new to the CASB environment.""In some cases, when you have a lot of policies, it can get confusing for users and you can get lost in the GUI.""They could improve their mobile agents as they have some limitations.""There could be better integration with other solutions.""The configuration in the cloud model could be improved upon.""Third party integration with other cloud applications could be improved. Sometimes the API won't be working, but Netskope is taking it seriously. They accept all the feature requests, and they are trying to provide whatever we ask from them."

More Netskope CASB Cons →

"An improvement would be if they could provide an out-of-the-box experience, like 20 to 30 features all ready to go. In comparison, LogRhythm offers out-of-the-box features. With Zscaler Internet Access, there is firewall IPS, multiple security services, filtering, DLP, and CASB browser isolation. These are things that all users are going to be using. However, when an administrator or architect would start building this, I would definitely need to engage professional services to help clients do it.""Sometimes, support isn't available.""Zscaler Internet Access could improve by adding a VPN feature.""Zscaler Internet Access can improve by adding traffic filtering based on the DNS.""One thing that they could improve is the ability to import rules from other platforms.""I don't know whether it's Zscaler or not, however, sometimes I can't access my time management. I need to wait and try again a few hours later. Typically, if I let some time pass, I can access it again.""The reporting functionality could be a bit easier to use. There is a reporting function, but it's quite hard to do any good reporting, from a user-management perspective. For example, if a department manager wants to know how his department is using the web, there is a way to get the data, but it's quite cumbersome to get it and show it well. And that's true for comparing between departments.""What could be improved in Zscaler Internet Access is its price. It could be cheaper."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I am not sure, I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I think it's $1.00 or so per device/month."

  • "The licensing part for Umbrella is really flexible."
  • "There are three models for licensing with different feature sets."
  • "I think it's worth the money."
  • "The price of Cisco Umbrella is a little higher than similar solutions, like Gateway."
  • "The price should be slightly lower than the current price because if you look at the whole solution, it is simply a threat intelligence solution to block blacklisted things. The price should be lower looking at the features provided by the solution. The price isn't too high either, but it could be lower."
  • "There is a subscription cost."

  • "They should work on licensing costs."
  • "The pricing is competitive."
  • "Licensing is on a yearly basis."
  • "The price of the solution is fair but it depends on your use case."
  • "There is a license required for this solution and there are many licensing models available. For example, what applications are covered as part of the license."
  • "I recall that the price was considerably cheaper than that of Zscaler. It was around 60,000 AUD for 1,000 users per year and included some training and some premier support offerings. If we wanted to take advantage of the CASB capabilities, then there was an additional subscription fee, for which we didn't have the budget. On price, I would give Netskope a three or four out of five because it's quite expensive, but it offers a lot of value."

    Reviews from Real Users

Cisco Umbrella stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Some of the major ones are its DNS-based protection, ability to protect users no matter where they are located, stability, and high performance.

Daniel B., a network specialist at Syswind Kft, writes, “We primarily use the solution as cloud security for our branches. It protects us from direct internet outbreaks. It makes for good flexibility. The solution is very easy to manage. We found the initial setup, for example, to be quite simple. Efficient protection on the DNS level and even higher. The sandboxing feature analyses and handles the complicated security risks.”

Victor M., SOC & Security Services Director at BEST, notes, “It provides security for the remote workers and it helps to improve enterprise security in a very easy way. We mainly enjoy web software protection capabilities. It prevents the end-users from getting into bad sites or sites that potentially could have malware or could be phishing. It helps end-users avoid the wrong sites. The solution works very smoothly. The user interface is good.”

    Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by Zscaler Internet Access users.

A Service Manager at a construction company says, "There are a bunch of different capabilities that are valuable within the platform. We use quite a lot of them, but not everything. The ones that are most important to us are the URL Filtering and the application control. For our needs, the cloud-native proxy architecture is a very good solution. This architecture helps with cyber threats because we inspect most of the traffic and we can see that a lot of threats are stopped directly in the secure web gateway."

Owen N., Security Architect at Claro Enterprise Solutions, explains that the solution’s most valuable features include “The integration of the gateway that inspects all ports and protocols. So, there is threat prevention; The cloud sandbox; VNS security; Access control that will protect URL filtering and the cloud firewall; Data protection that will protect your gateway, like your CASB or your cloud DLP; The capabilities of this will point your traffic to Zscaler Cloud.”

An Architecture Senior Manager at an insurance company mentions, "The data loss prevention feature is the most valuable. It stops our users from inadvertently leaking our customers' data to the Internet or anywhere else it shouldn't go." He also adds, “The solution provides quick access to cloud services, securing our data and allowing us to inspect all our traffic.”
