ControlUp and Elastic Observability compete in the performance management and data analytics sector. Elastic Observability appears to have an edge in data analysis due to its open-source framework, while ControlUp excels in performance management and real-time analysis.
Features: ControlUp focuses on performance management with features like endpoint monitoring, real-time performance analysis, and integration with Netscaler and Scoutbees. Elastic Observability places emphasis on logging and analytics, using tools like Kibana for hybrid cloud environments, favoring extensive data analysis through its open-source capabilities.
Room for Improvement: ControlUp could improve integration capabilities, UI, and alerting systems, and develop a robust mobile application. Elastic Observability needs advancements in visualization, a simplified user experience to reduce manual operations, and enhanced infrastructure monitoring along with better cost transparency.
Ease of Deployment and Customer Service: ControlUp offers flexible deployment across hybrid cloud and on-premises setups with responsive customer service noted for quick issue resolution. Elastic Observability primarily deploys on-premises, with a substantial setup requirement and a learning curve. While knowledgeable, their service could benefit from increased promptness and support in new technology adoption.
Pricing and ROI: ControlUp provides competitive pricing but users mention hidden charges. Despite a potentially higher cost, users value its capabilities. Elastic Observability is more affordable due to its open-source model, though large implementations might find pricing competitive for smaller enterprises. Both solutions report positive ROI, with ControlUp excelling in efficiency savings and Elastic offering cost-effective data analysis.
This is having a 24/7 junior admin who's really smart, always there, always doing work, but you have to consume his work.
Basically, what we were targeting is the response time of the virtual environment.
Elastic Observability has saved us time as it's much easier to find relevant pieces across the system in one screen compared to our own software, and it has saved resources too since the same resources can use less time.
I was quite happy to work with ControlUp because the support is excellent.
Basically, if I could take everything that you do, put it in a tool, and hand you that tool so you don't have to repeat your efforts, then you would be able to make good use of it.
Elastic support really struggles in complex situations to resolve issues.
Their excellent documentation typically helps me solve any issues I encounter.
It scales very well; you just have to tell it what you're doing and size it for what you're asking.
I rate the scalability of Elastic Observability as a ten, as we have never seen issues even with a lot of data coming in from more customers, provided we have the appropriate configuration.
Elastic Observability seems to have a good scale-out capability.
Elastic Observability is easy in deployment in general for small scale, but when you deploy it at a really large scale, the complexity comes with the customizations.
There are some bugs that come with each release, but they are keen always to build major versions and minor versions on time, including the CVE vulnerabilities to fix it.
It is very stable, and I would rate it ten out of ten based on my interaction with it.
I would rate the stability of Elastic Observability as a ten, as we don't experience any issues.
There is area for improvement, maybe in the reporting.
For instance, if you have many error logs and want to create a rule with a custom query, such as triggering an alert for five errors in the last hour, all you need to do is open the AI bot, type this question, and it generates an Elastic query for you to use in your alert rules.
It lacked some capabilities when handling on-prem devices, like network observability, package flow analysis, and device performance data on the infrastructure side.
Some areas such as AI Ops still require data scientists to understand machine learning and AI, and it doesn't have a quick win with no-brainer use cases.
It is expensive.
The license is reasonably priced, however, the VMs where we host the solution are extremely expensive, making the overall cost in the public cloud high.
Elastic Observability is cost-efficient and provides all features in the enterprise license without asset-based licensing.
Observability is actually cheaper compared to logs because you're not indexing huge blobs of text and trying to parse those.
Everything works exactly the way it's meant to, a dream come true for anyone who's administering systems because it gives you all the information that you want and all the actions you want to take, all in one place.
It's not only monitoring, but it's also detecting, and it could even fix problems with a lot of automation that you can put in place to fix problems automatically before you even detect them.
The most valuable feature is the integrated platform that allows customers to start from observability and expand into other areas like security, EDR solutions, etc.
the most valued feature of Elastic is its log analytics capabilities.
All the features that we use, such as monitoring, dashboarding, reporting, the possibility of alerting, and the way we index the data, are important.

Reviews from Real Users
Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by PeerSpot users currently using the ControlUp solution.
A Chair, IEEE Consumer Technology Society - Dallas,Texas, USA at a non-profit says, “In terms of the public cloud, ControlUp's features make us feel very secure. Security, uptime, and reduced capital expenditures are the main reasons we use ControlUp. So basically, the money that we consume is based on the amount of time we are using a service. ControlUp offers a return-on-investment type of approach that helps us.”
A VP Virtualisation and Citrix Engineer at BlackRock mentions, “Solve is quickly becoming one of the most-used features. Its interface allows us to connect to all 54,000 monitored endpoints in real-time. The script-based actions have allowed us to extend the core reporting capabilities. Combined with the triggers, we have been growing their usage to fix things before they become an issue. Lastly, the controller view allows us to compare the configurations of settings side-by-side which is extremely helpful when tracking down the RCA of an issue.”
A Senior Citrix Remote Access Engineer at Rabobank comments, “The high-level view of the estate coupled with powerful administration tools has been great. We can see real-time performance and trends and can create triggers for common issues with associated scripts that can automate a lot of the previous manual remediation steps.”
