Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

Streamlined data management reduces workload and costs significantly for the team
We are planning to use Rubrik Go's AI-powered insights for predictive analytics, but have not implemented this yet. I cannot provide updates on Rubrik Go's capability to automate data management tasks because I have not used that feature yet. Rubrik Go's integration capabilities with cloud providers have benefited my multi-cloud environment significantly. Rubrik Go's subscription model has helped me align my data protection investments, which is a good option as I am one of the customers who have deployed this subscription option. I am definitely satisfied with the licensing model as it is very simplified and easy to understand. On a scale of 1-10, I rate Rubrik Go a 9.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution includes the best compatibility metrics for integration and they are managed by Google support."
"The solution's interface is easy to use. For manageability, it doesn't matter where the resource is coming from or going to. That's the great power of the Control Panel: It's easy to use and does not matter if you manage on-prem or cloud resources."
"The return points are very valuable."
"The most valuable features of Commvault Cloud include deduplication and compression."
"What I find valuable is restoring the complete server. Restoring files is also valuable, but I like restoring the server because you don't have to rebuild a new one."
"Not everyone has agents for everything and Commvault has agents for most products. It's the most complete."
"Metallic helped me to restore the data within an hour, which is much faster than restoring from Microsoft services."
"The product's stability is good enough."
"The solution's main focus is on security and ransomware."
"Rubrik Go is very simple to use."
"The standout feature is its ransomware protection capabilities."
"The solution is easy to install; our team just has to put together the plan, give it to IT and let them handle it. Other solutions are quite complex, but this is much simpler."
"The automation capabilities streamline our operations significantly."
"The solution's most valuable feature is Sensitive Data Discovery."
"The most valuable feature is the ease of use for backing up VMs."
"We use the solution as a backup for our virtual environment and SQL databases."

Cons

"The new HTML5-based management portals are very nice, but do not yet have all of the features of the Java-based client."
"They can improve the VMware recovery and VMware backup. There is an improvement area on the VMware infrastructure. They can make available what they call a VSA proxy. They can have an appliance-type setup to deploy VSA backups and help recover quicker. They can have an appliance ready. Instead of having to have a server dedicated to that and installing software on a server, they can just provide an actual appliance for that."
"The user creation and management capabilities could be improved."
"If I were to ask them to work on something, it would be the fidelity of the alerts that occur. They should tell me if it is a real event or not. It is easy for it to identify that something hit it but give me more information. They can build AI into the engine so that I get better output from an alert to tell me if I should really be interested in that or not."
"This solution can be complex and difficult to administer because it supports all of the many platforms, so it would help if they could simplify it."
"I would like to see more customizable reports. I have reports going right now, but the daily report, for example, shows something like 40 jobs that ran when there are just a few endpoints on there. I'd like to just know if the endpoint was successfully backed up, not how many times. More customizable reports would be nice to have."
"I would like Commvault to have a feature for cybersecurity threats, e.g. securing the target backup repository. Commvault just started testing and releasing this feature, but it needs to be stabilized."
"We've faced problems backing up our virtual machines."
"If you were to compare it to, say, EMC, the availability of the documentation, training programs, and end-user education aren't as good. Rubrik could improve this."
"You should be able to add more workloads to Rubrik Go."
"The AWS backups could be improved."
"I would like to see better integration with applications, such as those from Microsoft, to make backing up from those applications simpler."
"Rubrik Go could improve on the Kubernetes side; they should have more features for Kubernetes backup and orchestration."
"Rubrik Go's security visibility could be improved."
"The solution’s pricing could be reduced."
"If you're going for Rubrik, you are not opting for the tape library because Rubrik doesn't have the fiber cable connected to the tape library."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is bundled with hardware licensing. If I want to increase the hardware, I have to buy exactly the same because it's based on the core hardware license. We cannot tell discount because we have an NDA signed with Commvault because of my academic license. The solution is more expensive than NetBackup and Veeam but cheaper than Rubrik."
"The price should be reduced because it is too expensive for our customers."
"The tool is affordable."
"The pricing is far better than we had in the past. The license for Dell EMC was not too expensive, but the storage, given that Dell EMC is based on data domains, was pretty expensive."
"I looked at this at the beginning of the year and I don't remember what the prices were for all the other services, but I thought that Metallic's was fair. It was also highly rated, which was even more important than cost because I need a reliable, secure, backup method."
"We like that there is no extra cost for SharePoint, Teams, or OneDrive. It is all mimicking Microsoft's model. Every user has one terabyte of space. When users start using OneDrive, everybody has one terabyte that will be backed up included in the price."
"Hands down, Metallic provides us with more predictable costs for our backup requirements. You are getting what you pay for. If they are charging you X amount of dollars at that point, that is what you are going to pay. So far, I have not seen any hidden costs or any kind of gotchas. It is pretty cut-and-dry. They will let you know, "Hey, you are going to use our storage and it will cost you this much. You are going to use your storage, then we are going to charge you this much to backup.""
"Our yearly cost is around €20,000... The cost is based on the number of users and the amount of data. They sell it per terabyte."
"Rubrik Go is more cost-effective than similar solutions by other vendors."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is expensive and ten is cheap, I rate the solution's pricing a three out of ten."
"Rubrick Go is quite expensive - I would rate its pricing four out of ten."
"The solution is reasonably priced."
"I would rate the product's pricing a seven out of ten. The solution's costs are monthly."
"The client pays for the solution depending on what they use."
"It's an expensive product if you compare it to traditional backup solutions; however, if you compare it as a total cost of ownership for a solution, it is not."
"This is a very costly solution."
