Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Office Integration. The full integration into the Microsoft Office products is just perfect.""You can upload your bin, upload your files quickly, and download your files quickly. It provides a lot of other alternatives.""Using Box for cloud storage allows us to focus on the service and maintaining infrastructure.""File sharing with collaborators not on the same domain with offline access from multiple devices: I work on many projects that are multi-organizational, such as with customers, suppliers, or acquisitions.""It is really easy to load files to and from this solution.""The most valuable feature of Box is security.""The solution is used for data storage and any kind of visualization.""It is a very user-friendly product."

"We are able to handle more than one hundred POs at any given time with their shipping docs and info, with only one person in charge."

More Jive Pros →

Cons
"Data privacy, regarding where to store your data: Offering several transparent(!) options (where to store my data and whether to sync back or not and where to sync) regarding the local law situations (USA, EU, Switzerland!) would increase the credibility of a US based company (after NSA ‘snooping’).""I recommend doing the trial first, because it's not cheap ware. It's not overly expensive, but it's not cheap ware, and enterprise has a minimum number of users.""They could integrate better with other platforms.""With OneDrive, you can continuously save your files over a Box folder. That is something I wish we could have.""I would love to see the ability to invite collaborators extended to a file level, not just the folder level.""Maturity of the enterprise security around user management.""Working on documents in real-time is sometimes faulty and could be improved.""The solution's data security should be improved."

"The search engine could be improved and also provide some kind of indexing."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The pricing may seem steep at first, but delve into the features and you'll soon realize it is incredible value for what you get."
  • "It is expensive per head, as you need the enterprise license to get full security and tools. So negotiate a discount!"
  • "Better sign a full year's contract to get a discount."
  • "I'm in Higher Ed, so we purchase through Internet2-Net+. I absolutely recommend going that route for Higher Ed customers."
  • "A business account has a minimum of three users. If you are more than three people in-house, go for the Enterprise version. All the external users are free of charge."
  • "Our pricing and licensing is excellent. I'd tell all Higher Ed customers to talk with Internet2 for excellent pricing and support."
  • "I believe Box is cheaper than SharePoint."
  • "They are very price competitive when pushed. Initially, they come out with a standard list price, but they are willing to be very competitive. The Box price was pretty much equal to or lower than the Citrix price, and Box has more features."

At Mediacurrent we often get requests to compare Drupal to other platforms used for intranet sites and social business platforms (like https://dev.twitter.com/ for example). This is often referred to as “Social Business Software”, which has grown in popularity in recent years. I decided to do a round-up of a couple of the more well known platforms and compare their products to Drupal. In this roundup we will be comparing Jive, Sharepoint and Drupal Commons. Drupal Commons is a popular distribution created by Acquia to compete with some of these other proprietary platforms. There are many other options out there, commercial and otherwise, to compare with Drupal but I want to focus on Jive and Sharepoint for a couple of reasons. I chose Jive because it is one of the leading competitors in this space in respect to market share. Next, I chose Sharepoint because I have some history with Sharepoint. This experience dates back to when I built www.adhe.edu with Sharepoint 2007 a few years ago. I subsequently wrote this blog entry about my experience shortly after joining Mediacurrent. This roundup will also act as a refresher for those who read my original “Drupal vs. Sharepoint” blog. Yammer, which was recently bought by Microsoft and is the tool we currently use for office communication will also get some mentions throughout this article. As I went through and tested each of these tools I used three main criteria in my evaluation Cost Ability to Customize Overall features… Read more →
