Delivers cost-effective data backup with room for search improvements
The challenges I face especially are those I've mentioned, that finding some specific data in N-able Cove Data Protection is not as easy as it is in some other systems. You cannot just search for something—you need to know where it was and when it was there to restore it, plus it would be nice to take out data from Microsoft 365 in some portable format, which is currently not an option. I would like to extract the data from Microsoft 365 in a portable format, something like a database or maybe just to take out a PST file or SharePoint and Teams files to the file system. Especially in these times, where we discuss potential risks with the Microsoft cloud for European companies, companies would want to know how to access their data from the backup if they suddenly don't have a tenant. I believe there should be the ability to take out data from Microsoft 365 in a portable format. I know that Cohesity is working on making such a thing. It's not there yet; I asked last week for something for forensics, and the support team said it's not possible yet, but I know from our technical account manager they are working on some solutions.

Simplifies backup, restore, and clone management across disparate applications and infrastructures
It's a simple solution to use. It's simple to configure everything that you need — configure your backups. It gives you an option to backup to the cloud or backup to on-premise, or to backup to cloud storage. For example, if a customer is running on Azure NetApp files or on something cloud-based that they want to back up, they have the option of bringing their own licensing and cloud controls and NetApp will give them the storage to back up for as long as they want. When deleting backups, the controls are very intuitive so not just anyone can delete the backups, only the administrator is able to do that. Backing up and restoring is simple. It's easy. It's one click of a button. It's quite good, I like it.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution has reduced backup times by an immeasurable amount. Its backups are incremental, so you are only backing up data changes based on the last 24 hours or so. If you are also maintaining the stored images, the restores are also only incremental, happening in minutes. Whereas, with a lot of the other solutions that we have looked at, each time it goes to refresh the restore, then it has to build a completely new image. That takes forever. This solution also improves recovery time."
"The most valuable feature is that it's hands-off. I log in every morning and there are pre-canned filters that I've created to make my life easier. I have something called server status color bars, and that gives me all the servers and, in a nutshell, I can see: if any errors are being reported; when the last backup was; if one is not working, should there be one, and it literally jumps off the page."
"N-able Cove Data Protection is user-friendly and straightforward, and the dashboard is clear."
"The most valuable feature by far is the Virtual Disaster Recovery. On top of that is the bare-metal recovery. The recovery options that we have are great. We have tested the Virtual Disaster Recovery and the bare-metal recovery in just about any scenario you can think of. We have even restored bare metal, a full server, to a laptop, and had full functionality. It's just insane how well it works and how simple it is. It does most of the work for you."
"Because the package includes cloud storage, we don't need to worry about hosting it inside. That was very important to us. And because the vendor has data centers worldwide, our reps in Europe and other places can get to what they need quickly and easily."
"The monitoring makes it very easy to check whether a backup has gone bad."
"The integration of N-able Cove Data Protection into our existing infrastructure is easy."
"I know I won't have an issue if the data is there. The reliability and the confidence that we have is amazing. It doesn't matter. We've had customers have ransomware. We've had customers that have had corruption. We've had customers that have had employees destroy their data. As long as it's been backed up, I know that I can get it back and I know I have nothing to worry about. Our confidence level is very high."
"It gives you an option to back up to the cloud or back up to on-premise, or to backup to cloud storage."
"It's a user-friendly solution."
"The most valuable feature is stability."
"The most valuable features are the support for both NAS and NFS."
"The most valuable feature is the simplicity in configuration and use."

Cons

"Integration with a hybrid cloud is something that I found complicated."
"Having the licensing available for partners to be able to take advantage of testing without paying would make a big difference."
"An area for improvement that would really work out well would be if there were a little bit more of an elegant handshake relationship between SolarWinds RMM and the PCs that are being backed up, to advise regarding "up" status... Since RMM is an agent that feeds back that a machine is alive and on, I don't see any reason why they can't either tap into that one feature or build the same exact polling within the backup agent, to update right away and say the system is online or offline."
"This solution is not very good for image restores, mainly just files. The solution also does not allow you to enable or disable backups. Sometimes, our users will connect via mobile device and it will use their data to perform the backup. If they were able to enable and disable the backup, they would not have this issue."
"There could be a possibility to create a local NAS backup for infrastructure."
"The recovery side, the restore side, could be a little more optimized."
"One area I don't like has to do with the agent that goes on the system... if a system stays offline for some length of time, say for a week or so, I may have to go back in and reinstall the agent to get it back in business. I don't know what's causing that."
"The one thing they don't are Linux servers, it's Windows only. I understand that directive. I have another product that I use for our Linux servers and stuff, but it would be nice if they had that flexibility on the Linux side. I understand the development and the world is geared towards Windows in 365, I know that's where the clienteles are and the business and the money is."
"The features need to be updated to support the latest hardware, as it changes every year."
"There are still a few things on SharePoint that they need to correct in terms of how they backup and restore."
"Better integration with third-party databases and applications is needed."
"For newcomers or people who have less experience, it's a complex solution that could be simplified somewhat."
"I would like to see the graphical user interface improved to include all of the functionality because there are some things that you need to use the command-line interface for."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is very competitive and it's well worth the price."
"There is no per node cost, at least not the way I am doing it. I am on bulk. New customers can be set up on a trial, where they can get things all squared away, then they can switch over to being a billed customer."
"I believe that the price is very reasonable in comparison to other options. It is cheaper than both Redstor and Acronis and, since we are now using our own on-premise cloud, there is absolutely no comparison since we have unlimited storage rather than paying per gigabyte used for their onsite storage. We are currently able to backup fifty computers for the same price that we use to backup five computers."
"The pricing is affordable. N-able Cove Data Protection has a direct-to-cloud architecture, but it also allows saving backups locally without extra storage costs."
"The pricing of SolarWinds seems to be fair compared to the rest of the industry."
"The cost is around ten dollars per workstation a month and that includes a certain amount of data."
"The only option I would like to see is an adjustable scale. Right now we have 250 seats and we're not using all of them. It would be nice to be able to save that little bit of money by being able to buy just what we need."
"Cove only takes the data you have on the physical server. I can back that up for long periods of time, and I don't accrue high charges to have the data in the cloud. It stays at one rate. This allows me to forecast payment for the next one or two years and show clients their estimated growth."
"The licensing was based on a three-year subscription and the price is good compared so some other vendors."
"The pricing is more or less the same as what we'd get from Veeam on Office 365, so it's fine."
"My understanding of the costs is that the price is fair, and not too expensive."
