Family sharing and personal backups have improved how I manage and access my files anywhere
I am not fond of their syncing. Their file syncing is very clunky, so I am not a real fan of the file syncing. I think Box does a much better job of the syncing of data onto desktops and laptops. When you try to sync the files in Dropbox, it actually puts a copy of the file on your laptop, so it sucks up all of your memory. Whereas with Box, I can sync files into my file explorer and it is still cloud-based. They have not saved the file physically onto my laptop. They save it in the cloud and it just does a temporary download and then it uploads again, but that file is not saved on my laptop. Whereas with Dropbox, anytime you want to sync on your laptop, it actually does save it. There is a way to set it up, but it takes a lot more work and effort and I have never been able to get it to work the way I want it to work. So I just do not sync my files with Dropbox on my laptop. That limits my ability to use Dropbox from my work laptop because my work laptop just does not have any memory at all on it. They give the bare minimum of memory and say that it should all be in the cloud anyway, so you do not need to have that much storage space. So I cannot even access Dropbox from my work laptop and have to use the browser version of Dropbox if I need to access my Dropbox from my work laptop. Within the company, it is a personal choice. Our company has not dictated what cloud service to use. As long as it has all the security measures that meet the standards of our IT department, anyone can use whatever cloud service they want. For example, our company is not allowed to use Google because Google is not a secure cloud service in the estimation of our IT department. So there are cloud services that we are not allowed to use, but from the five to seven different services that they give us to choose from, we all can find what meets our needs.

Has an excellent Database Management System and high level of services, performance, and availability
We will need to implement prototypes in our data warehouse. We will have to implement and to support some different types of files like video, audio, pictures, and non-structured data. So we are working on that. We would like better integration for data security. We will have many partners, eight or nine external partners. We will still use our system to upgrade our warehouse. But with many partners, the data warehouse will not be unique. It will be a distributed data platform. So we would need and we are looking for many services to better manage the integrity and the use of all of the data. We are receiving all these data from trains and trucks that are working on the highways and on the roads. We will have to implement some facilities to adequately use all this data at a really high volume coming from IoT. So we are not choosing that and we will have to implement some services. Right now, we don't have any monitoring. We do have major density and access control, but when a user is in our environment, we do not have the services to really measure what he is doing. I will have to report in three months on the project and its evolution. I don't have the financials and the best practices regarding the financial models with costs and benefits for a major data platform with many partners. We will know what it will cost, but we will have to define some benefits because when I will be at the treasury board asking for a major project, they will ask me what would the benefits from that will be. I'm doing research into best practices. I know that the U.S. government has a platform like the one we want to build. It is a bigger one, from what I understand. I think that the state of California and maybe the state of New York has the type of platform we want to put in place. I would like to present more than just an article. I would like to have a reference model, to really be on target by showing the benefits that are possible down the road.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"This is a good solution, it's one of the strongest along with the Google Cloud Platform for sharing files and data with team members so obviously I recommend Dropbox for all users for flexibility."
"The solution is easy to use, everyone can use it."
"It is the best solution in terms of space, file sharing, and live editing, and I can share and edit files with multiple users."
"For many years it costed zero to me and granted a lot of features I needed, and even now that I am a paying customer I still feel the money is well spent."
"The performance has been good."
"File syncing is the most valuable feature, and I use it every day to sync files across to the cloud."
"It is very practical and so easy to upload and download files and carry on without my computer."
"The scalability is great for us."
"We have really high level of services, performance, availability, and it is stable, and everything works together really well."
"The most valuable features of this solution are that it is self-driving, self-securing, and self-repairing."
"This solution has automated protection from downtime. High-availability is built into every component, and the backups are completely automated."

Cons

"More free space needs to be provided."
"The solution could be more scalable."
"With Dropbox, there is no option for simultaneous work."
"If a file is shared with me and I've never opened it, it won't upload it to the local drive, which is very inconvenient if my internet connection goes out."
"Considering the solution's shortcomings, I want the product to be more user-friendly and offer more storage capacity."
"While it can scale, there's too much difference between plans. We'd prefer it if it had a few other plan options that weren't so big in terms of differences."
"Unsecure - Poor app support"
"The tool must be better protected."
"The price of licenses is high and should be improved."
"Right now, we don't have any monitoring."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is expensive."
"A basic version of Dropbox is available for free with a paid subscription from Microsoft."
"One area that has been a big issue for me is when I tried to close my accounts, it is difficult. We had small personal accounts, and we then wanted to consolidate everything to the business account, but then to cancel and close those smaller accounts, it's a big issue. I still haven't done it and it's quite a long process."
"It has some free features, but for some of the features, you need to pay. If you need more storage, then you need to pay. Its licensing probably is on a monthly basis."
"The solution is purchased on a subscription basis, and there are purchasing options. If you purchase annually there is a discount."
"We pay for the license yearly."
"We must pay when we upsize to a larger space."
"Given the price and limitations, there are more competitive options available."
