Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Scalable and stable solution for backup purposes, with good encryption and huge data conversion features.""Data Domain is valuable, especially to restore data. For normal data, the restore from Data Domain is very efficient and fast.""The time taken for backup is very fast.""The solution is quite scalable. An organization shouldn't have any problem expanding if they use this solution.""The most valuable feature of this solution is deduplication.""Overall, scalability is great.""Data Domain Boost has a unique protocol. I don't think with other vendors you get the same efficiency. I work with some the other products, but this solution has amazing efficiency in comparison.""The initial setup is very straightforward."

More DD Boost Pros →

"I like the tool’s deduplication feature. We get a ratio of 9:1 for deduplication. The product is also Linux based. Last year, our organization faced some virus attacks. However, the backup was safe because of the product being a Linux version. HPE StoreOnce is a secure product.""The most valuable features for us are the ease of use, the reliability, and the exceptional deduplication that we get across that data that we store on those devices.""If you have a large enough storage capacity then you can take an ample amount of data.""The initial setup is one of the most user-friendly B2B user solutions. It's good, it's easy. Deployment usually takes less than one day. You only need one person for deployment and maintenance.""The solution is stable.""HPE StoreOnce works well, it is stable.""The solution's licensing policy is more practical and not confusing.""I think the most valuable feature is the catalyst technology, which is in the StoreOnce appliance."

More HPE StoreOnce Pros →

"The flexibility. Being able to virtualize it, port it wherever I like, test my backups, test my DR capabilities whenever I like without impacting anybody.""Its initial setup is easy.""Most importantly is having that island into that datacenter, and being able to address things in the same console. Thus, it is irrelevant where it's stored.""The deduplication engine. Right now, we're at about 10.5 to 11 times deduplication of our backup data.""The solution can be used for all Office 365 applications.""It's pretty simple. Once you set it, it goes; and then the idea of being able to get it to the cloud very quickly. It's kind of a set-it-forget-it.""It's so easy to work with.""The solution is very easy to use and it offers great support."

Cons
"DD Boost's technical support could be better.""Technical support is okay but could be improved. I've sent a lot of complaints their way and I feel like they might be able to respond a bit better.""It should be expanded to include other databases and software. It should also be made easier to restore.""The solution could improve by adding more flexibility for the customers here in Thailand. Some of the small capacity models of the solution are not needed by our customers. There should be a more flexible version of the solution.""If you are using it with Recovery Manager, there are certain limitations. If those limitations are addressed, productivity will improve.""The main issue I've identified is that when backing up a final backup from the branch server, we don't have deduplication functionality.""This product is expensive compared to other storage so the price can be improved.""This solution should cover more platforms, and there should be more product coverage."

More DD Boost Cons →

"The appliance doesn't have the global deduplication, it has StoreOnce deduplication. It does not deduplicate across the appliance, it will deduplicate in one particular store. With the global deduplication, I could store more data.""We're outsourced with a partner who recalls a larger amount of problems with the stability of the product.""The web interface, ease of use, and GUI all need to be improved.""The solution must provide backup options for smaller capacities.""The solution would be improved if it could also be used as a data store for VMware.""It is difficult to solve issues with this solution remotely. I prefer to use the knowledge base platforms. The response time could improve.""We archive our backups on tape, so I feel like if we could somehow plug our tape drive directly into the StoreOnce device and set it up to where it would archive based on, if some kind of rules based engine or what have you, that would really be an improvement for us.""This product would be improved with the inclusion of more features to security or WORM."

More HPE StoreOnce Cons →

"What could be helpful is different user base authentication so then maybe we could allow different customers to point to a single appliance and they only see the backups and things that they have.""More than a 500 volume limit. At the moment, it only supports up to 500 volumes for SnapMirror and that's a problem. We've got 750, so a larger limit for volume replicas for SnapMirror.""More capacity with the basic model of the AltaVault would probably help out.""There are some bits it could do better. With tighter integration maybe with Veeam, or something like that, it'd be really good.""The solution needs faster indexing.""NetApp's own competing products complicate things.""It would be nice if the solution was more complete. Many customers are looking for a single solution or silo that they can manage everything from. It would be nice, instead of having different products, if everything a client needed was in one solution.""I really want to partner it with the SnapCenter. We haven't implemented that yet. We're upgrading all of our stuff to the ONTAP 9, which you had to have."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We scale this product by adding licenses, which are related to capacity."
  • "The cost is monthly."
  • "The hardware platform is cost intense, so for small and mid-range, this product is not the best choice."
  • "The pricing is high compared to the competition and should be reconsidered."
  • "The solution is very good because it is easy to use and it speeds up the backup and lowers the requirement for the storage rate. It is capable of encryption, compression, and deduplication and it is fast for sending all of the data over the network because it sends only the change blocks from the client to the DD server."
  • "The solution comes with a capacity license and it is a one-time purchase. There are additional costs, such as support."
  • "Dell EMC Data Domain Boost is an expensive product. There are extra costs for support because every year, you have to renew your SLA for support, and the cost is always increasing."
  • "My company must pay approximately 10,000 USD annually, making it an expensive product."
  • More DD Boost Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The price puts me off. It's definitely on the high side."
  • "To be honest, we were quite happy with the price, but we always want things cheaper than they are. I think for what we got, we felt that the price was quite reasonable comparing it to other products that provide that same level of functionality."
  • "There are costs for additional storage and space."
  • "Price-wise, it comes with a high price tag when compared to other products."
  • "The cost of HPE StoreOnce is very expensive."
  • "We have got a perpetual license, and we have access to all the features. If you are using cloud banks, you can store the internal data in HPE Cloud if needed. You can offload the data to the HPE Cloud. It is a licensed product. We have got around 10 TB of cloud bank storage with a one-time payment. We specifically took 10 TB for very critical offsite backups. We can also increase it in blocks if needed."
  • "The licensing schemes could improve in HPE StoreOnce and the price is high. They should reduce the price."
  • "I think the product is competitive in terms of pricing. Other products like the one from Dell are costlier compared to the tool."
  • More HPE StoreOnce Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It's quite cost-effective."
  • "The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
  • "It is a rather expensive program."
  • "You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
  • "In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
  • "There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."

    Overview

DD Boost software delivers an advanced level of integration with backup applications and data base utilities, enhancing performance and ease of use. Dell also provides a DD Boost File System Plug-In (BoostFS) with DD Boost for even greater application support, which enables all the benefits of DD Boost for applications that use NFS for data protection. Rather than sending all data to the system for deduplication processes, DD Boost enables the backup server or application client to send only unique data segments across the network to the system.

HP StoreOnce Backup is a data backup solution that provides a consistent, high-performance, scale-out architecture for your entire enterprise. Reduce the amount of backup data capacity by 95 percent, and choose between powerful dedicated appliances for data centers, or flexible virtual appliances for smaller and remote offices.

NetApp AltaVault is a cloud-integrated storage solution created to increase recovery capabilities and lower cost and risks. It is better than traditional backup and recovery solutions because they are considerably slower, more expensive, risky, and can be too complex for the comprehension of many users. NetApp AltaVault solves issues related to backup, archival, and restoration. Compared to on-premises solutions, this software claims to be up to 90% less expensive while solving multiple issues related to data storage in the cloud. AltaVault presents three solutions to its customers: backup and recovery, cold storage and archives, and disaster recovery.

    1. NetApp’s backup and recovery solution works with Kerne-Based Virtual Machine, Microsoft Hyper-V, and VMware vSphere, creating a solution for mid-sized businesses as well as for bigger companies that want to protect their offices in different locations. The usable local cache capacities of this solution range from 32TB to 383TB, providing clients with enough storage for their important data while giving them the option to retrieve it if something goes amiss.

      2. NetApp AltaVault can be configured in cold storage mode and used for data that is not often used. The solution is scalable, thus allowing minimal costs for operating with cold data and allowing fast access to it at the same time.

        3. AltaVault offers disaster recovery for Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. Your data will be secured on the cloud, providing you with a secure backup if the need for disaster recovery arises.

          NetApp AltaVault Features

NetApp AltaVault’s many valued features include:

          • Data reduction: NetApp AltaVault applies deduplication and compression, reducing data up to a 30:1 ratio.

          • Network and cloud optimization: AltaVault can increase data transfer speed by up to 4 times due to its built-in WAN optimization.

          • Data restoration: Because data is restored from the local cache, recoverability is up to 32 times faster than other methods.

          • Deployment and scale: Users can choose their preferred method - virtual, physical, or cloud-based in Azure or AWS. Since NetApp AltaVault starts at 2TB and can scale up to 57PB, it is one of the most scalable products in its category.

          • Compatible with existing backup software: NetApp AltaVault is compatible with NetApp SnapMirror, EMC, IBM, Commvault, Veritas, and Veeam, meaning it offers a vast array of options for its users when it comes to backup software.

          • Cloud choice and agility: AltaVault supports NetApp StorageGRID, Azure, Google, IBM, and AWS. This provides users with the assurance that their data is safely stored, even if their cloud provider experiences technical issues.
