Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The functionality is very good. DD Boost and DD entry replication are used in almost all backup concepts. Those are the most used features.""It's a stable solution.""Data Domain is valuable, especially to restore data. For normal data, the restore from Data Domain is very efficient and fast.""The most valuable feature of this solution is that it can support both the CIFS and NFS protocols simultaneously.""The tool's deployment was easy.""The initial setup is very straightforward.""The initial setup of DD Boost involves a simple procedure.""Very stable solution."

"You can use different protocols at the same time. Monitoring is also very easy in NetApp FAS Series. There is a free tool for monitoring.""The input and output per second performance are satisfactory.""The most important features are SnapVault, Snapshots, and SnapMirror.""Saves space with deduplication""The new FAS series is a good fit for some customers. We have good performance and capacity, even though it is full flash.""Fast Snapshots""End-users like that they can rely on the Snapshot technology so they can do their restores themselves.""Flexible and reliable storage solution with multiple features such as cloning, replication, and deduplication. Data migration can be done without any performance implications on the production systems."

Cons
"My customer was interested in ransomware protection. Currently, Dell offers the Cyber Vault solution, which is separate from Data Domain. Ideally, ransomware protection would be integrated directly within DD Boost, without requiring an additional out-of-the-box solution. This feature is currently available with HPE's Zerto and Huawei's Ocean Protect with third-party products like PradoNet. While Cyber Vault exists as a separate solution from Data Domain, having some standard protection for immutable backups into DD Boost would be a valuable addition and make it more competitive with other vendors.""The solution could always be cheaper.""The solution needs a better gateway between the on-premises and cloud deployment models. We have to work around it or find a third party to assist.""There are some limitations where you cannot use it as a shared server or as a file server, it is limited for the only backup.""The experience of restoring VMware or Veeam Backup is difficult, when the backup you are using is a solution for backup, which is already having a deduplication. When you try to restore from Data Domain, it doesn't work perfectly, because Data Domain is already having a deduplication as well.""It would be nice if they could have the same tool set right from the smallest to the biggest modules, but being specific frame dependent.""When my company faced a problem with the product, it took some time to get proper support.""DD Boost is a bit expensive."

More DD Boost Cons →

"The user interface could be improved to have better graphics and the performance analyzer could be better.""If our customer needs a high-performance storage solution then we don't recommend this product.""We would like to have further integration with some backup products. They have some of them already, but there could be more.""Replication should ideally be part of the ONTAP base bundle.""No other area for improvement comes to mind other than its price. Making the price more attractive will help this solution have a bigger market share.""We are not able to connect to the support of NetApp from Sudan. We have to go through many agents for support, which makes it difficult.""NetApp needs to put its OS on a microchip rather than on disks.""There are some technical limitations, but it would be great to have in-line deduplication and in-line compression for the FAS series as well."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We scale this product by adding licenses, which are related to capacity."
  • "The cost is monthly."
  • "The hardware platform is cost intense, so for small and mid-range, this product is not the best choice."
  • "The pricing is high compared to the competition and should be reconsidered."
  • "The solution is very good because it is easy to use and it speeds up the backup and lowers the requirement for the storage rate. It is capable of encryption, compression, and deduplication and it is fast for sending all of the data over the network because it sends only the change blocks from the client to the DD server."
  • "The solution comes with a capacity license and it is a one-time purchase. There are additional costs, such as support."
  • "Dell EMC Data Domain Boost is an expensive product. There are extra costs for support because every year, you have to renew your SLA for support, and the cost is always increasing."
  • "My company must pay approximately 10,000 USD annually, making it an expensive product."

  • "It’s difficult for us to get money, so make sure you get everything in order, because there’s no going back and saying “oh, I missed this or that”, so make sure you plan well and well in advance."
  • "it’s not an inexpensive solution and it may not be for the cost-sensitive customer."
  • "The process for going to cluster mode is expensive."
  • "Most storage vendors also have software, or licensing bundles, which may offer the required licenses considerably cheaper, but do also maybe offer licenses, which are not needed."
  • "There are products available in market with comparatively lower costs."
  • "Cost effective storage for all performance levels (including all-flash)."
  • "The only area that could be improved is to lower prices for their All Flash FAS."
  • "The price it not low, but comparing features to other vendors, the price can be balanced."

    Overview

DD Boost software delivers an advanced level of integration with backup applications and data base utilities, enhancing performance and ease of use. Dell also provides a DD Boost File System Plug-In (BoostFS) with DD Boost for even greater application support, which enables all the benefits of DD Boost for applications that use NFS for data protection. Rather than sending all data to the system for deduplication processes, DD Boost enables the backup server or application client to send only unique data segments across the network to the system.

NetApp FAS series is an enterprise-level storage system that provides a wide variety of data management services, including data protection, block and file storage, and data management.

NetApp FAS is designed to be highly scalable, allowing your organization to grow storage capacity on demand. NetApp FAS also supports multiple protocols, including NFS, SMB, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel, as well as various storage architectures, including SAN (Storage Area Network) and NAS (Network-Attached Storage).

The FAS series has multiple data protection and data management features, including snapshots, cloning, replication, and deduplication, to help secure your data and manage it more efficiently. The system integrates with other NetApp products and solutions, to create a unified data management platform. The system can be deployed on-premise, on multi-cloud environments, or hybrid.

NetApp FAS Series Benefits and Features

NetApp FAS series provides its users with several key benefits and features, including:

    • Scalability: NetApp FAS series is easy to scale, allowing organizations to rapidly grow their storage capacity according to demand.
    • Security: Protect and manage your data with various data protection and data management tools, including snapshots, cloning, replication, and deduplication.
    • Seamless integration: Integrate with other NetApp products and solutions to ensure a unified data management platform across on-premise, hybrid, and multi-cloud environments.
    • Reduced costs: Consolidation of multiple storage boxes greatly reduces the data center footprint. From a management point of view, with NetApp FAS you manage a single storage box instead of multiple storage boxes.

    • Compatibility: Forward and backward compatibility ensures that you don’t have to trade in existing controllers. New controllers can always integrate with previously released controllers.
    • Multi-protocol support: Support for multiple protocols, including NFS, SMB, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel.
    • High performance and availability: The solution has high input and output per second performance and ensures that critical data remains accessible in the event of a hardware failure.

    • Intuitive interface: The FAS series has a user-friendly interface and management dashboard, making it easy to manage your storage systems. With unified management, you can quickly run a single protocol on your entire system

    • Data cloning and replication: Easily clone databases of any size. Clones occupy a very, very small footprint on the storage until they are severed from the main database. Replications carried out by the system are fast and require very little bandwidth.

    Reviews from Real Users

NetApp FAS Series stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Several major ones are its speed, reliability, and a wide variety of features.

Adriano S., IT project and infrastructure service manager, writes, “The replication feature is noteworthy because it's faster than most and it uses little bandwidth. Then there's the friendly interface that the equipment offers. With this interface, it is very easy to manage.”

Temitope O., a NetApp product manager at Hiperdist Ltd, says, “I like the unified management feature because sometimes you end up running a single protocol on the entire system. You rather have a system for a particular protocol and another system for other protocols, especially in a big environment like mine.”
