Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"AWS Storage Gateway has durability.""AWS Storage Gateway's best feature is its secure storage.""AWS Storage Gateway is used when there's a high requirement for storage and the company has their goal to move to the cloud and they are not comfortable having it in the data centers. They want the data to move to the cloud. We propose storage services that give them flexibility. They don't have to manage their data centers by themselves because it is being managed by Amazon or Microsoft. They do not have to worry about security and vulnerability issues. That is a strategy that companies can find value in and choose a cloud service.""We like the flexibility and easy-to-use storage. I'm happy about the response time.""The stability is probably the most valuable aspect of the product.""It's a cloud storage solution, which makes it quite flexible. If you have one terabyte today and need ten tomorrow, it's not a problem.""The solution has low latency.""The most valuable feature is that it requires less utilization of space, compared to storing directly to the database of the system. It offers a unique way of doing things."

More AWS Storage Gateway Pros →

"It's pretty simple. Once you set it, it goes; and then the idea of being able to get it to the cloud very quickly. It's kind of a set-it-forget-it.""The solution is very easy to use and it offers great support.""The most valuable feature is the portability of large archived data. You're able to put things on large on-prem, low-cost storage and then augment that with even lower cost storage in the cloud.""The flexibility. Being able to virtualize it, port it wherever I like, test my backups, test my DR capabilities whenever I like without impacting anybody.""You can store backups for a while.""It's so easy to work with.""The most valuable features of the solution stem from the fact that it is easy to use and integrate with whichever operating systems you use, providing you with a complete view, especially when you plan to migrate to some other operating system.""Most importantly is having that island into that datacenter, and being able to address things in the same console. Thus, it is irrelevant where it's stored."

Cons
"Initial setup could be simplified and that would make the user experience better.""The security could improve in the solution.""AWS Storage Gateway's cost can be an issue.""It would be better for us if they improved their integration capability.""AWS Storage Gateway could improve by having different kinds of storage. For example, allowing all kinds of data, whether it's images or structure, not structure data. This would be great.""Its interface could be easier to use.""I cannot say it's perfect.""The solution's setup is not easy and takes time to complete."

More AWS Storage Gateway Cons →

"What could be helpful is different user base authentication so then maybe we could allow different customers to point to a single appliance and they only see the backups and things that they have.""The initial setup phase of the tool was difficult.""NetApp's own competing products complicate things.""More than a 500 volume limit. At the moment, it only supports up to 500 volumes for SnapMirror and that's a problem. We've got 750, so a larger limit for volume replicas for SnapMirror.""There are some bits it could do better. With tighter integration maybe with Veeam, or something like that, it'd be really good.""It would be nice if the solution was more complete. Many customers are looking for a single solution or silo that they can manage everything from. It would be nice, instead of having different products, if everything a client needed was in one solution.""It's a good product, but it's becoming outdated and moving to their other primary architecture.""The solution needs faster indexing."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "There is a monthly subscription for the use of this solution."
  • "We pay a monthly license."
  • "AWS Storage Gateway is reasonably priced. The price depends on how much you need. The whole synopse model comes into the picture for the cloud where it depends on how many instances per VM and the price will increase. It's a reasonable price because with all the competition around the price has to be competitive. It's not very costly."
  • "The solution's price is reasonable."
  • More AWS Storage Gateway Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It's quite cost-effective."
  • "The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
  • "It is a rather expensive program."
  • "You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
  • "In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
  • "There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."

    Overview

AWS Storage Gateway provides hybrid cloud storage services that give users access to unlimited cloud storage. As a part of the Amazon Web Services, one of the leading on-demand cloud computing platforms, the AWS Storage Gateway allows you to use the AWS storage without the need to rewrite your applications. It does this by providing protocols like iSCSI, NFS, and SMB. It works by caching frequently accessed data on premises and simultaneously storing data on AWS, as well as optimizing data transfer in the cloud. The optimization it provides for AWS is done by sending only changed data and by compressing data.

AWS Storage Gateway provides the option for in-cloud processing by integrating with Amazon S3 and FSx for Windows File Server. It works with AWS Identity and Access Management to secure access management to services and recourse. It is also compatible with data encryption in the cloud by working with AWS Key Management Service, for monitoring with Amazon CloudWatch, and for activity of account logging with AWS CloudTrail. Through AWS Backup, you can manage backup and retention policies for AWS Storage Gateway. Users have access to a maximum supported size of local cache per gateway of up to 64 TiB on a virtual machine.

The use cases for AWS Storage Gateway include the ability to store incoming data from on-premises instruments in Amazon Simple Storage Services, as well as using AWS for data analysis. It provides the opportunity to modernize your interactive file sharing while simplifying management and reducing costs. AWS Storage Gateway is also suitable for backing up data in the cloud, giving users virtually unlimited scale.

The following services allow Amazon Storage Gateway to provide on-premises applications with access to cloud storage:

    • Amazon S3 File Gateway: Using file protocols like Network File System and Server Message Block, users can store and retrieve objects in Amazon Simple Storage Service S3.

    • Amazon FSx File Gateway: Store and retrieve files in Amazon FSx for Windows File Server through the Server Message Block protocol.

    • Volume Gateway: AWS Storage Gateway offers users block storage for on-premises applications. Users can make copies of volumes and manage retention, as well as restore snapshots.

    • Tape Gateway: Backup applications are provided with an iSCSI virtual tape library (VTL) interface that consists of virtual tape drivers, virtual tapes, and a virtual media changer.

    AWS Storage Gateway Benefits

Due to its value-added features, AWS Storage Gateway has many benefits, which include:

    • Ability to store data in AWS on various devices
    • Provides virtually unlimited cloud storage because it's based on the AWS cloud

NetApp AltaVault is a cloud-integrated storage solution created to increase recovery capabilities and lower cost and risks. It is better than traditional backup and recovery solutions because they are considerably slower, more expensive, risky, and can be too complex for the comprehension of many users. NetApp AltaVault solves issues related to backup, archival, and restoration. Compared to on-premises solutions, this software claims to be up to 90% less expensive while solving multiple issues related to data storage in the cloud. AltaVault presents three solutions to its customers: backup and recovery, cold storage and archives, and disaster recovery.

    1. NetApp’s backup and recovery solution works with Kerne-Based Virtual Machine, Microsoft Hyper-V, and VMware vSphere, creating a solution for mid-sized businesses as well as for bigger companies that want to protect their offices in different locations. The usable local cache capacities of this solution range from 32TB to 383TB, providing clients with enough storage for their important data while giving them the option to retrieve it if something goes amiss.

      2. NetApp AltaVault can be configured in cold storage mode and used for data that is not often used. The solution is scalable, thus allowing minimal costs for operating with cold data and allowing fast access to it at the same time.

        3. AltaVault offers disaster recovery for Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. Your data will be secured on the cloud, providing you with a secure backup if the need for disaster recovery arises.
