Brings data together from multiple platforms and optimizes cross-environment orchestration
The features of Control-M that I like the most include the ability to easily integrate or bring in different platforms into Control-M. For instance, AWS, mainframe, TWS, and something that's running on Autosys can all be brought into Control-M, converted to how Control-M runs it, and then the batch can be executed. This centralizes various applications in Control-M, which doesn't just have to handle batch processes, but also other tasks like reporting on required data. I find this functionality very useful and the setup is impressive, with more advancements yet to come. With Control-M, my company has achieved several measurable improvements since I started. The metrics indicate that the number of failures has dropped, and we have addressed the issue of excessive false alerts that I encountered when I joined. Previously, we received an overwhelming number of alerts daily, but now we manage to maintain that at a normalized level, perhaps around five to fifteen alerts, depending on running core batches and their setup.

Good for automatically triggering workflows, but needs to be more customizable
We use this product for many different reasons related to our business We use it a lot for creating workflows to transfer materials between plants, which is a signature part of what we do. The most valuable feature is the ability to automatically trigger the workflow. This solution needs to be…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Control-M, developed by BMC, which was previously part of BMC Helix and is now BMC Software, is focusing on Digital Business Automation processes, they are developing many different modules in Control-M, and the scalability is fantastic."
"Control-M has positively impacted my organization by saving a considerable amount of time, and manual intervention is not required for most operations because most things are automated with Control-M."
"Ninety percent or more of the batch processing is now centralized into a single scheduling platform, helping the support teams so that they only need to go to one group for scheduling and monitoring while the operations support staff has one platform where they can monitor almost all of our batch processing."
"Control-M provides us with a unified view, where we can easily define, orchestrate, and monitor all our application workflows and data pipelines. It also provides the ability to filter. So, if I don't want to see everything, I can also narrow it down or open ViewPoint. This is very important since we have thousands of jobs to monitor. If we did not have this ability, it would be very difficult to see what is going on."
"There's another feature called Workload Archiving, where the data for all the jobs can be stored for however many days that we want, which is very useful for any historical analytics."
"The GUI interface is exceptional, beating any of the competitors’ products I have used."
"BMC Control-M Managed File Transfer is highly stable; it is enterprise-grade software, and even when doing a job of 10,000 to 20,000, the solution is very stable."
"Maintaining and monitoring of workloads have been and continue to be the most valuable feature in our environment."
"We use it a lot for creating workflows to transfer materials between plants, which is a signature part of what we do."
"Took few hours to build workflows with ready-to-use templates, so we had improved productivity."
"It’s easier, more controlled and automatized checks of the budget through this system."
"We use it a lot for creating workflows to transfer materials between plants, which is a signature part of what we do."

Cons

"I would like to see them adopt more cloud. Most companies don't have a single cloud, meaning we have data sources that come from different cloud providers. That may have been solved already, but supporting Azure would be an improvement because companies tend not to have only AWS and GCP."
"It’s well suited for anywhere and anyone, but it comes with a cost; it is quite pricey."
"There are areas for improvement, especially with the transition from the thick client to the web GUI. While Control-M's main game-changer is its GUI, the current web interface is less user-friendly than the thick client."
"Control-M could be more user-friendly, and while it is user-friendly now, it can be improved to be more intuitive."
"One feature I would like to include is in the middle of the monitoring domain. In the monitoring domain, if I have to update a number of jobs, the only way to do it is by manually clicking on each job. I would like a feature that allows me to do a mass update in the jobs, which I feel is still lacking."
"The performance could be better. Control-M Enterprise Manager tends to slow the system down even on a server with a six-core processor and 32 gigabytes of RAM."
"The user interface is not that good."
"They could improve the reporting."
"Yes, for email notification but it could also be with company network."
"This solution needs to be more customizable."
"The reports for users. The reports with more details; we have to generate them by the database."
"This solution needs to be more customizable."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"As we increase the number of tasks or jobs on the system, there are concerns about cost."
"BMC Control-M Managed File Transfer is expensive."
"This solution is very expensive compared to others in the market. Previously it was the only solution in our country to offer this kind of functionality. However, technology has caught up and many competitors offer the same at a lower price."
"BMC's price is based on the number of jobs."
"I rate the solution's price a nine on a scale of one to ten, where one is low or really affordable, and ten is high or really expensive. It is a really expensive tool."
"This is an area where it is a little difficult to work with BMC. They want to do licenses by job, which is what we have. For example, the simplest is to license by job, but they can also license by nodes. While the licensing is simple to use, it might not be the correct licensing model for the customer. It is okay because we want to license by job, which is something measurable. At the end of the day, licensing by job is the most important."
"The pricing is moderate, not too low or too high compared to other solutions."
"The cost is basically $100 a job, give or take."
