We use it to back up pretty much everything that we've got in our system. We've got a 13-terabyte license. We back up HyperV servers, files, and SQL. You name it, and we pretty much back it up.

Has a virtual standby feature, works out of the box, and is user-friendly
Pros and Cons
- "Arcserve has a feature called virtual standby (VSB), which has been very helpful because I already have a hot standby copy of my critical infrastructure. If something breaks, I can spin up that virtual standby copy in less than five minutes and ensure that my data is available to everyone and that business continuity is maintained."
- "We are looking at scaling up to the cloud and using immutable copies on the cloud. Arcserve UDP 8.0 does have the immutable feature supporting AWS, but I'm looking for multi-cloud support. So, I'm waiting for Arcserve to release that in the next release."
What is our primary use case?
I use the solution for disaster recovery and continuous availability. For example, if my DC goes down, I can spin up VMs almost instantaneously on my DR site. Plus, I have an Arcserve High Availability or Arcserve Continuous Availability license that helps me to keep a real-time in-sync copy of my SQL database on which my CRM tool runs. So, I can maintain a highly available SQL DB, one on-premises and one in the cloud. What is most valuable?
Arcserve has a feature called virtual standby (VSB), which has been very helpful because I already have a hot standby copy of my critical infrastructure. We are looking at scaling up to the cloud and using immutable copies on the cloud. Arcserve UDP 8.0 does have the immutable feature supporting AWS, but I'm looking for multi-cloud support. So, I'm waiting for Arcserve to release that in the next release. I would like to see support for SAP HANA in UDP. We are looking for block-level backup or byte-level backup of SAP HANA because we are looking at migrating from the existing SQL to SAP HANA.For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using it for almost eight years now. The primary copy is on the on-premises storage, and the secondary copy is on AWS.Buyer's Guide

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Arcserve UDP is pretty much stable, and as a result, it's a good go-to solution. I've been using it for the last eight years. What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable. If you have good infrastructure underneath the software, then, it's a very scalable solution. It's scalable in the sense that it can protect from 100 VMs to 1,000 VMs. Also, the backups that I need to be retained for six years or seven years for compliance scale out very well on the cloud. So, I'm really happy with that. How are customer service and support?
I would rate technical support at nine on a scale from one to ten. They have provided me with workarounds and solutions in a timely manner. How would you rate customer service and support?
PositiveHow was the initial setup?
Arcserve is a very easy solution to deploy because the infrastructure and UI are very user-friendly. It's very easy to deploy. If I remember correctly, I deployed the apps or solution across my new virtualized infrastructure in less than 30 minutes. It worked out of the box. What other advice do I have?
It works out of the box, and it saves my life a lot. When a server goes down, Arcserve has always restored those critical servers, so I would rate it at nine on a scale from one to ten.Disclosure: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Backs up pretty much everything that we've got, but needs a more intuitive interface and more integrations
Pros and Cons
- "The standard backup and restore feature is most used."
- "Its interface can be improved. I find it unintuitive."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
The standard backup and restore feature is most used.
What needs improvement?
Its interface can be improved. I find it unintuitive.
It could have some integrations. It doesn't have some of the integration and some of the monitoring features that I would normally utilize. Some of the solutions have got integrations with different storage and things like that.
For how long have I used the solution?
We've had ArcServe for as long as I can remember.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is overall rock-solid. It does what it says it is going to do, and it does it well.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We're pretty small. We've been able to scale it out for what we needed to do with it. We could do multiple sites when we needed to.
We have only one backup guy who uses this solution. I pop in once in a while if he is not available and restore something, but overall, it is a one-man show.
It covers all our bases in the entire organization, and we aren't planning on expanding any further.
How are customer service and support?
I have not dealt with them, but I know that the person handling the backups has not been super happy with the technical support on that side.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I don't recall using anything else prior to it.
How was the initial setup?
It was pretty straightforward. We've had it for a long time. It was set up a long time ago, and it has been migrated over the years. The person handling the backups has spent quite a few months fine-tuning it.
What about the implementation team?
The person handling the backups did it pretty much on his own. He also takes care of its maintenance.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Its price seems reasonable. Its price is average as compared to the other products I've looked at.
We have a three-year license right now. There are no other costs beyond the standard licensing fee.
What other advice do I have?
I would advise making sure that you have your strategy planned.
I would rate it a seven out of 10. It is a good, solid product, but it doesn't do anything special. It just does what it is told.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Good deduplication feature, but the speed of large restores is rather slow
Pros and Cons
- "One of the things that I do like about it is that it has a very good deduplication feature."
- "The speed of restores should be improved. We have found the speed of large restores rather slow."
What is our primary use case?
It is a backup solution. We use it for small file restores.
How has it helped my organization?
We don't always have volume shadow copy enabled on various products. If someone deletes a file, this is what we use to restore the file.
What is most valuable?
One of the things that I do like about it is that it has a very good deduplication feature.
What needs improvement?
The speed of restores should be improved. We have found the speed of large restores rather slow.
It should also back up Office 365 mailboxes. It would be nice to be able to restore PST files. It might already be there in version 8, which is a new version, but I haven't looked at it.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for five or six years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It has been very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is fine. As long as you have storage and licenses, you can throw it out to as many virtual servers or physical servers as you have.
In terms of its users, it is really just me. They call me when they have deleted a file.
How are customer service and support?
They're decent.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We hadn't used a previous solution. We tend to use Arcserve backup and the UDP together. So, we had nothing like UDP.
How was the initial setup?
It was pretty straightforward. It wasn't bad.
What about the implementation team?
We are the consultants who implement it. In terms of staff required for deployment and maintenance, it is really a nice one-person solution.
What was our ROI?
We just give people their files back.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The retail fee is $1300 for a year for one server. Other than that, there is just the cost of your hardware.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We didn't really evaluate other solutions. We were an Arcserve shop at the time.
What other advice do I have?
I would advise others to do large test restores and see if that's going to do it because we have had trouble with doing a restore of large amounts of data, and it takes too long.
I would rate it a seven out of 10. It is good.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Private Cloud

Lacks flexibility but useful in general backups
Pros and Cons
- "I would recommend it if there is a general case."
- "We could not go into granular details of retrieving backup information."
What is our primary use case?
Our primary use case with Arcserve is as a backup solution.
How has it helped my organization?
We used Arcserve as a backup solution, but it wasn't very flexible. The UDP at Arcserve had multiple issues, and we could not go into granular details of retrieving backup information. For example, what backups existed during what time. We were not able to retrieve to satisfy our requirements. I'm not really satisfied with Arcserve. As a whole, the solution was not very promising.
What needs improvement?
The product could be improved. For example, on Veritas, you can see a particular file, when it was backed up, on what particular archive it exists, et cetera. We were unable to retrieve that specific information from Arcserve for our requirements.
There could be additional features added based on the practical concerns we had. If I have backed up a certain amount of data, I want to know, if I give the path of the data, how much of data has been backed up, and the sizing information with regards to data. That information could be included in the features.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been working with Arcserve UDP for about three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of the solution is okay. We used it for some time, but it was not meeting our requirements properly.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We didn't scale the solution, so I'm unable to comment on the scalability of it.
How are customer service and support?
We received support from the vendor who was technically assisting us, and it was okay, but we could not implement the requirements that we had. We weren't contacting Arcserve, but I'm sure the vendor consulted support.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing is moderate.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate the solution a four out of ten.
I would not recommend the solution based on our experience. It depends on the situation. If you just want VMware or backup, it's okay, but in an extensive manner, if you want to use backup technology and tools, then it does not have the flexibility. So I would recommend it if there is a general case. If not, I would say look for something else.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Responsive technical support, plenty of backup options, and scalable
Pros and Cons
- "There are many backup options available in this solution. For example, you are able to do backups of servers, email, OST files, and users. This is a complete backup solution which is very good."
- "The solution can use a lot of bandwidth when the scheduling is not done, it should auto-schedule itself. For example, if there are 50 users connected in the network at 12 o'clock and the backup is not scheduled. At this time the network offices are going to have performance issues when it is doing a backup. Having a feature to auto-schedule a time when the network is not being used often would be beneficial."
What is our primary use case?
We have many servers at our branch head office that are on our premises. A few of those servers and many other user systems are completely being backed up by Arcserve UDP. Approximately 75% of the backups are handled by Arcserve UDP.
What is most valuable?
There are many backup options available in this solution. For example, you are able to do backups of servers, email, OST files, and users. This is a complete backup solution which is very good.
What needs improvement?
The solution can use a lot of bandwidth when the scheduling is not done, it should auto-schedule itself. For example, if there are 50 users connected in the network at 12 o'clock and the backup is not scheduled. At this time the network offices are going to have performance issues when it is doing a backup. Having a feature to auto-schedule a time when the network is not being used often would be beneficial.
The solution has a deduplication feature but while sending the data over the network it is not utilizing this feature. This could be improved in the future.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution within the last 12 months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Approximately two years ago in the previous version of the solution, it was not stable. However, in the new releases, it is quite stable and we have increased the user count from 100 to 250.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable, we have 250 users using the solution.
How are customer service and technical support?
The customer support has been responsive to the issues we were facing, such as bandwidth usage. They have been very good and helpful to our needs.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was not complex and was straightforward.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
There is an annual license required for this solution and it is priced well.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We have evaluated other options.
What other advice do I have?
My advice to others is if they want a comprehensive solution where they can do backups of their servers, applications, emails, and user systems Arcserve is a good choice.
I rate Arcserve UDP an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Beneficial live replication and simple implementation
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature of Arcserve UDP is live replication."
- "I had an issue with Arcserve UDP during the failover and the secondary machine didn't get back online, even though it ran automatically. I faced the issue during a crisis situation. However, I haven't faced such a problem again."
What is our primary use case?
Arcserve UDP provides security to our database and also it takes backup regularly, without human intervention. It's a replication and backup software.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of Arcserve UDP is live replication.
What needs improvement?
I had an issue with Arcserve UDP during the failover and the secondary machine didn't get back online, even though it ran automatically. I faced the issue during a crisis situation. However, I haven't faced such a problem again.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Arcserve UDP for approximately two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of Arcserve UDP could improve.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Arcserve UDP is not a scalable solution.
How are customer service and support?
I have not used technical support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We were using a different solution previously but after we did some market research we switched.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of Arcserve UDP was simple. The process took approximately three hours.
I rate the setup of Arcserve UDP a four out of five.
What about the implementation team?
We did the implementation of the solution. However, you have to be aware of your systems and have some knowledge.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
There are annual subscription fees and there are licensing costs for three computers. It is an expensive solution.
I rate the price of Arcserve UDP a two out of five.
What other advice do I have?
Arcserve UDP has served its use case 100 percent for us.
I rate Arcserve UDP an eight out of ten.

Duplication works well but the support needs to be better
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature is the duplication."
- "Based on my experience, whenever we need support, there are difficulties with communication when trying to resolve the issue."
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is the duplication.
What needs improvement?
Customer service and support need to be improved. Based on my experience, whenever we need support, there are difficulties with communication when trying to resolve the issue.
We have also had trouble with the tape sorter.
We have complaints about the simplicity of this product. They have the agent-based and agentless setup options, and there have been issues that meant we could not utilize Arcserve after a catastrophe with our network.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using Arcserve UDP since 2016.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The price of this product is high and it should be lower.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate this solution a six out of ten.
