AI-driven insights have reduced downtime and improved cross-team collaboration
We encountered some challenges while using Dynatrace. Although the initial setup was smooth, fine-tuning alert thresholds and custom metrics took some time. Another challenge was that Dynatrace charges based on host units, so we had to carefully plan our agent deployments. The licensing model is expensive. Additionally, the complexity of setup is an issue. While OneAgent and auto-discover services are powerful, the setup is more complex compared to other tools such as Prometheus and Grafana. These integrations are simple and basic, but Dynatrace setup requires more complexity based on the environment. For new users wanting to use Dynatrace, it is difficult. However, the AI-related solutions and metrics took us to the next level for identifying and fixing things. Dynatrace requires an agent for operation. OneAgent is powerful, but it is also resource-heavy. On lightweight nodes or older systems, the agent can slightly impact performance. If Dynatrace could implement a lightweight agent behavior, we could make things faster. Additionally, if Dynatrace could add a long-term retention policy so that we could store more data and find fine-grained details, that would help us. While Dynatrace managed edition supports on-premises deployment, the SaaS version depends on cloud connectivity. For highly regulated or air-gapped environments, setup and updates can be challenging. Although the initial setup is smooth, if someone wants to fine-tune it and fully understand the tool end-to-end, it could be tricky.

Great for service discovery and load balancing and enables us to monitor the traffic flow
We use InfoVista 5View NetFlow on a private cloud. This product has improved the way our organization functions through the better discovery of services. We check the IP address for Office 365 and other cloud applications used in business operations. We use InfoVista 5View NetFlow to understand the cost of the problems on our network links. We monitor the traffic flow and check which application is causing a lot of traffic. Instead of buying more bandwidth, we target the pocket with very high traffic. We move these applications so that the traffic is served through another partner. From Milan to Rome, we use various utilities for network load balancing for applications requiring excessive traffic. We monitor the traffic with InfoVista 5View NetFlow before going to the business and checking the on-site location for problems or issues.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"PurePath gives a lot of flexibility in identifying issues and finding the flow of execution."
"Dynatrace has reduced our total headcount in operations and the mean time to detect and resolve problems, and as a result those challenging offline times are much shorter, if not non-existent, because of this solution."
"Dynatrace facilitates great live performance monitoring, allowing us to easily and visually detect problems before they become a large impact issue to the business."
"Very good for improving application performance."
"Having the metrics easily understood and easily articulating the information."
"Alerts monitors reporting and troubleshooting proactive monitoring system health and business process monitoring."
"Comprehensive suite of solutions that can address all aspects of applications from dev to ops."
"For us AppMon is unbeatable in the market."
"InfoVista 5View NetFlow is very powerful; it can go into the network to discover very low-level trouble in two or three seconds and, in a low range of time, certify network processes where you can see the data."
"InfoVista 5View NetFlow allows us to control the application layer and manage API connections, i.e. Facebook logins or whatever other third-party API services we require."
"InfoVista 5View NetFlow is very powerful; it can go into the network to discover very low-level trouble in two or three seconds and, in a low range of time, certify network processes where you can see the data."

Cons

"Even if the engine can manage a huge amount of data, requests take time to succeed."
"The user interface needs improvement. Sometimes it is not really clear how you can get to the right place, where you can find all of the information you need."
"This solution needs improvement in terms of automation."
"There are a few problems with our Mobile App's Dynatrace Libraries."
"I did like the old dashboards, the legacy 6.3 for example; the way we were able to do the dashboarding in the client. I would like to be able to see that in the new version of Dynatrace."
"We sometimes have to run plugins on docker containers."
"The next release I would like to see is especially with external API monitoring. Right now, everything goes into one bucket, but if it were split into which API is failing, that way we wouldn't have to drill down to find out where the failures are."
"The dashboarding in Dynatrace is not very good. We have used other monitoring tools like AppDynamics. We are also using AppDynamics for some of our products. If I compare Dynatrace with those monitoring tools, the dashboarding is not as good. If I have to create a dashboard it takes me time, the experience is not that good."
"A little bit better documentation on the details is needed because this subject is not easy sometimes to understand, which limits the capability of the software."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price of the solution is expensive."
"As compared to New Relic and other providers, it is more expensive, which is its biggest disadvantage. Its biggest advantage is its capability. It is more feature-rich."
"Look at the product and the product features, not the price. Too often people look at the price and turn away. Dynatrace costs a little bit more than the other products I researched, but it can do far more."
"I have not been able to observe more than 1% overhead, despite Dynatrace saying that it can be slightly higher in some situations."
"Pricing is based on the number of servers monitored, so for big applications, it is a bit expensive."
"I feel the price is good for what the product does."
"There are additional Professional Services costs which ensure the solution is configured with meaningful names so you're getting the most money for your investment."
"Licensing is a bit complicated for Dynatrace, and pricing is dependent on how much your organization invests."
