We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The diversity on offer is very, very good. Everything is supported. It's great.""IntelliSnap for snapshot collection is one of the most efficient and easiest ways to back up large amounts of data.""It never fails. Sometimes we miss a backup, but there's always a reason for it, and it's not the fault of Commvault. In the last three years, we've never had to open a ticket with Commvault.""The solution is easy to use and the duplication is quite good.""The backup and restore capabilities are key. The most useful things to us about Commvault, in general, is the breadth of the applications that it can protect as well as the features inside of it, like deduplication and encryption. When people get their data encrypted, Commvault has a way to tell if somebody is being attacked through a cybersecurity threat because their data changes. So, Commvault has what they call honeypot files out there to look to see if anybody is changing these files. Only Commvault knows which files those are, so nobody should be messing with those files. If it changes, then it will alert you to say, "Oh, I potentially have somebody messing with my files." It will alert you to something going on in your environment that probably shouldn't be happening. We deploy that with all our customers so they have this capability as well.""This product has allowed us to recover data when we've had issues.""We switched to Commvault because we were looking to centralize management. This reduced IT administrator time as well as providing stability and reliability for data backups in a single console.""We have multiple workloads, including SQL, Oracle, SAP HANA, especially Sybase, as well as file systems, VMs, and Exchange mailboxes. Commvault provides very good support for them."

"The command-line interface is user-friendly and well documented in the reference guide.""The most valuable features of this solution were the features we worked most with which were telemetry, and the scheduler.""The initial setup was relatively easy.""It's a good product that's pretty easy to use.""The stability of the product seems to be quite good.""I like that it supports HPE UNIX servers since many backup solutions do not - this is the main reason why we chose this solution.""Data Protector is quite simple and easy to deploy. The deployment is always the same. It's on a server, and the agents are deployed to the machines in a straightforward way. We have two engineers who deploy and manage all our backup solutions.""What we find most valuable in Micro Focus Data Protector is that it provides Japanese data protection, for example, it protects information such as the full Japanese name, address, etc."

Cons
"Commvault has two management dashboards. The first is the CommCell Console, which is Java-based, and the second is Command Center. We don't always find all the features we need in the Command Center and we need to go through the Java console, and sometimes features are only on the Java console.""There are two ways to use it and I prefer the web-based one over the app. I wish they were a little bit more matched in what they offer because the features aren't as available in the web-based interface as they are in the app.""They need to integrate configuration screens or videos (free training courses, webinars, demos) so that engineers with little experience can fully exploit the features that are offered or managed within the license that was acquired, and thus have better quality and completely satisfactory experience.""I would like Commvault to have a feature for cybersecurity threats, e.g. securing the target backup repository. Commvault just started testing and releasing this feature, but it needs to be stabilized.""Our customers complain that this is a difficult product to manage.""The deployment process should be simplified because it is not something that just anybody can do.""The reporting is complicated and should be simplified in an upcoming release.""Commvault is a rich system that might scare somebody the first time they see it because it feels so huge."

More Commvault Complete Data Protection Cons →

"We're not satisfied with the robustness and stability of the software since Micro Focus took it in-house. The GUI is one thing they could improve. It's still a bit archaic. Data Protector needs a more functional, user-friendly GUI.""Micro Focus Data Protector must improve its overall evolution record. They need to focus on hardware based instant recovery, client recovery, and cloud ability. Now there is no cloud ability.""The Micro Focus Data Protector support is not as good as Veeam Backup & Replication's support.""The downside of the flexibility on offer is if you over-configure it, it may fail to function as some configurations may not match.""Many of our users complain about the GUI. You still need to rely on the command line interface. Because it originated as a Unix system, Data Protector is still a command line-driven solution, which makes it seem rather dated compared to systems that are built around a GUI from day one. It doesn't affect the functionality, but some people don't find it user-friendly.""The online backups of Office 365 have room for improvement. This is now available for the Exchange Online part of Office 365, but we're still waiting for SharePoint Online, Teams, etc. We know that it's coming, but it takes time.""The scheduler setup could be better. We are facing some issues scheduling the job based on our requirements.""VMware backup integration and cloud recovery is lacking."

Pricing and Cost Advice

  • "The price could always be lower."
  • "One of the issues with backup vendors is that they overprice, or overvalue their products."
  • "The price should be reduced because it is too expensive for our customers."
  • "The price is a little bit high."
  • "The price is not cheap, but when you compare it to the other products they are all almost the same level in terms of price."
  • "In India, this is a very expensive product."
  • "Its cost is reasonable, but anybody else can do better benchmarking."

  • "The solution requires paying for a license."
  • "Our licensing is on a capacity basis."
  • "There is a perpetual license involved in addition to support which needs to be renewed annually."
  • "They have two types of licensing, one is for storage capacity and the other is client licensing. The capacity licensing here is a bit expensive."
  • "The pricing is acceptable for enterprise level companies, but it's not acceptable for small- and medium-sized businesses. Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution, and it should cover small- and medium-sized businesses with acceptable prices."
  • "Pricing for Micro Focus Data Protector is reasonable."
  • "We have many competitors who are pricing better, and we believe that our pricing is higher."

    Overview

Commvault® Complete Data Protection is a data protection and information management solution that runs on a single platform with a unified code base. Commvault enables companies worldwide to protect, access, and use all their data, anywhere and anytime, turning data into a powerful strategic asset. Commvault provides the resources and expertise to accelerate the return to normal business operations after a data loss event or an attack.

After installing the Commvault software, the data is processed by the agent software on client computers and backed up through the “MediaAgent” (Commvault’s data manager) to a hard disk or to cloud storage. All activity in the environment is backed up by a centralized server. Commvault users can then access the protected data using web browsers from desktop or mobile devices. The Commvault software is available across both cloud and on-premises environments.

    Reviews from Real Users

Commvault stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Some of the major ones are its backup, recovery, and data protection features as well as its centralized management.

Sheron B. a systems engineer at PAREXEL International Corporation writes, “I like that you have complete hooks into and total control of your data. The data is well-protected. It doesn't age off until it's copied. That's a big feature right there. When you reach the end of your retention, it does not expire until the secondary copy is completed. That allows you to hold onto data that otherwise would have aged off by retention. I like that feature. It's hard to just delete or lose data using the Commvault platform.

PeerSpot users note the effectiveness of Commvault. An engineer at a tech services company writes, "When it comes to recovery, Commvault is undeniably one of the best technologies out there. It's got all the different granularity levels that a business requires to get your information back to production. For example, we have their commission discovery, individual items recovery, mailbox recovery, databases, and different tables. Some databases can be recovered individually. This level of granularity enables us to get the most value out of the product."

Built on a unified architecture that leverages analytics and automation, Micro Focus Data Protector delivers comprehensive data protection, real-time intelligence, and guided optimization to ensure simple, reliable, intelligent and cost-effective backup and recovery that is just as agile as your current and future IT environments. By standardizing the backup and recovery of information spread across locations, applications, formats, storage platforms, operating systems, and hypervisors, Data Protector provides assurance for mission critical information from the core to the edge, across physical, virtual, and cloud infrastructures.
