What is our primary use case?
In my job, Symphony software, especially the Rand Commander tool, was crucial for planning and optimizing networks. With Rand Commander, I could see where network elements were located, their configurations, and details like sectors and radio planning. I used the item tool to generate IP addresses based on specific rules, and the Name Manager for SQN assignments. Symphony's cloud models, particularly the open ones, made tasks like network planning and performance monitoring much easier for me.
How has it helped my organization?
The biggest benefit I have seen from using Symphony, especially in terms of automation, stands out. Specifically, in running automation tasks, like during special events in the open run solution, numerous nodes get involved in network designation, requiring extensive integration and precise planning. Doing this manually is not only time-consuming but prone to errors. Symphony, through its automation support, enables the creation of templates. These templates streamline the generation of all necessary data inputs, making planning for integrated network elements and interfaces much quicker and error-free.
What is most valuable?
I found the RAM Commander module in Symphony to be the most valuable. It provided a detailed and efficient overview of the network, simplifying tasks related to planning and optimization.
What needs improvement?
One area for improvement would be product maturity. Compared to established vendors, it lacks user flexibility and customization, especially in the PM module. The constraint of not being able to easily modify dashboards or templates hinders user adaptability. A more user-friendly and customizable approach, similar to platforms like Apple, would enhance the overall user experience with Symphony. One feature I felt was missing in Symphony was a module for scheduling performance reports. While it may be part of the current portfolio, not having it at that time was a limitation. I see this as a valuable enhancement.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Symphony has been stable overall. Being web-based, it works well on any browser. However, there were occasional issues, primarily related to the tool's stability during periods of improvement and maintenance. These instances led to temporary unavailability of the product.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have experience with solutions from other vendors like Nokia, Huawei, and Tyson. The main pros of Symphony, in comparison, are the modules that provide a comprehensive overview and the automation features for planning data. These aspects are notably beneficial and stand out. On the downside, the major cons revolve around user customization. Unlike other vendors where you can create your reports and customize navigation, Symphony's user optimization in the SCAP module is limited. This lack of flexibility is a significant drawback, especially when compared to other solutions. Overall, while certain modules like those related to SolarWinds are straightforward and comparable, Symphony falls short in terms of user customization.
How was the initial setup?
I helped with the deployment of Symphony as on-site support, focusing on tools like SAP inventory and the VM module for defining KPIs. I wasn't part of the initial deployment, but when I joined, basic functionalities were still being developed. Tasks like migrating from testing to production took less than two weeks, but ongoing development and testing were time-consuming.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend Symphony, especially if you are involved in optimizing day-to-day work, particularly in OpenRAN network deployment. It can significantly streamline tasks and offer modules not found in traditional vendors. It is a valuable tool for those looking to implement efficient network solutions. Overall, I would rate Symphony as a seven out of ten.
