Provides inbuilt data model and good matching engine
It's a tough tool for developers. Right now in the market, I think Informatica MDM is number one and is used a lot. IBM MDM was developed by some other company and IBM developed it more. There are definitely some flaws. The tool is difficult to understand from a customer perspective and for developers. Generally, customers can understand Informatica MDM and its functionality easily. If a developer is facing issues with IBM MDM, then a customer will definitely not understand most of the functionality. That is the main concern. IBM is introducing some Next-Gen MDM, where they are using a lot of current technologies and machine learning. Most of the problems we may be facing right now are probably solved in that version.

The couple of times we found issues with technical support from Microsoft for Microsoft MDS, they resolved them. The response time and understanding were adequate, though there was always a language barrier between the teams. The teams we worked with were in Korea, and it was sometimes a language issue.

When a client wants an analytics tool plus BI, that is when we look to this solution
Having used SAS in the past, in the role that I play, I always push for SAS and all the analytics. But without having done a full comparison with other tools, I do not feel I'm in a position to say that there are capabilities available with SAS that are not in the other tools. But from a practical perspective, I would definitely recommend this solution. I rate it at eight out of 10 because I still want to explore it a bit more. I have only used it for three clients, and not as a full-blown MDM asset. If you are running a complex use case, I may or may not be in a position to justify the use of this product at this point in time. I would be 80 percent comfortable doing so and that's why I'm giving it a score of eight.

Pros

"The features that are most valuable are the governance, the end-profiling and the ETL which allows you to see the metadata repositories."
"There are not really many areas of the product that need improvement because the product stays up-to-date with data management needs."
"It is a great product for your workflow, with seamless integration processes (batch, real time and near real), availability of exhaustive customization feature (Java-based and Script-based), business rules and validation framework, good technical support."
"Flexibility Web services"
"The ability to standardize and match names using a combination of global name recognition and an MDM server is a valuable feature for us."
"When users update their information on one product, the data is sent to a database. My approach was to maintain a master data record, ensuring that each platform loads the latest updated record. Instead of having three separate records, the system keeps one master data record, storing the historical records for reference."
"The advantage is that the matching engine is very good, so that's why customers generally prefer it, and from the inbuilt data model perspective, IBM MDM is good."
"The advantage is that the matching engine is very good, so that's why customers generally prefer it. From the inbuilt data model perspective, IBM MDM is good."
"Compared to other databases, it is easier to manage and administer."
"The solution is easy to install."
"The ROI is terrific and it means you can avoid building or purchasing a solution."
"This product provides a robust, flexible, and secure way for my organization and our customers to manage master data without the need to write code."
"I like the ease of deployment, as it is very easy to deploy and provision a machine, and I like the analytics and that I can run them, which makes it easier to do analytics compared to our previous tools, while Microsoft BI is quite good."
"Technical support is very good."
"It is very easy to deploy and provision a machine."
"It has been 200% useful in our organization."
"One good feature is that SAS MDM comes bundled with the entire stack so we are in a position to place it with the client."
"One good feature is that SAS MDM comes bundled with the entire stack so we are in a position to place it with the client. So when a client wants an analytics tool plus BI, and they want to bring in other elements, that is when we look to MDM, because it is a single vendor."

Cons

"The tool is difficult to understand from a customer perspective and for developers."
"The product is really only created for large organizations."
"However, it needs to mature in several areas including, UI, DAM, lighter out-of-box features, and simplify the currently complex technical footprint."
"If you are a small company, it is more likely overkill."
"The tool is difficult to understand from a customer perspective and for developers."
"We also want better cloud integration, so we could do things in the cloud if we needed to. This would be a good feature to add in a future release."
"Though probabilistic search is supported, this feature is not an out of the box API."
"It's complex because of the poor quality of the documentation."
"Microsoft MDS' language should be simple so everyone can use it easily."
"The Microsoft license cost could be lower."
"The business rules definition interface could be improved."
"The solution could be better integrated into Microsoft's other products."
"There are occasions when the solution maintains SD and we get duplications of MDS."
"The Microsoft license cost could be lower."
"I do not like using Silverlight and Internet Explorer. The new 2019 version gets rid of that, which is one of the reasons why we are looking to switch."
"The duplication feature is not so good."
"The initial setup was slightly complex. We did face a couple of issues such as the SAML integration not being very smooth. And linking communication with the metadata server was a bit of a challenge. Eventually, we were able to configure it properly."
"Only having SAS and MDM is not the right choice of tools because the likes of Informatica and Talend have better capabilities as far as I've seen."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It may be costly for small organizations but adds value for large organizations with demanding workflows."
"I would like to see better pricing."
"MDS is a part of the SQL Server enterprise license. I am not aware of any additional costs."
"Product licensing is very complicated. It would be helpful to have an online calculator to estimate the cost of a license."
"The solution does require a license and we have enterprise licenses."
"The pricing of this solution is good."
"With Microsoft, we buy everything though an agreement, so we purchase volume licensing every year."
"Microsoft MDS is an expensive solution."
"SAP is more expensive than Microsoft."
