AI-driven insights have reduced downtime and improved cross-team collaboration
We encountered some challenges while using Dynatrace. Although the initial setup was smooth, fine-tuning alert thresholds and custom metrics took some time. Another challenge was that Dynatrace charges based on host units, so we had to carefully plan our agent deployments. The licensing model is expensive. Additionally, the complexity of setup is an issue. While OneAgent and auto-discover services are powerful, the setup is more complex compared to other tools such as Prometheus and Grafana. These integrations are simple and basic, but Dynatrace setup requires more complexity based on the environment. For new users wanting to use Dynatrace, it is difficult. However, the AI-related solutions and metrics took us to the next level for identifying and fixing things. Dynatrace requires an agent for operation. OneAgent is powerful, but it is also resource-heavy. On lightweight nodes or older systems, the agent can slightly impact performance. If Dynatrace could implement a lightweight agent behavior, we could make things faster. Additionally, if Dynatrace could add a long-term retention policy so that we could store more data and find fine-grained details, that would help us. While Dynatrace managed edition supports on-premises deployment, the SaaS version depends on cloud connectivity. For highly regulated or air-gapped environments, setup and updates can be challenging. Although the initial setup is smooth, if someone wants to fine-tune it and fully understand the tool end-to-end, it could be tricky.

Provides real-time detection for the root cause of problems, minimizing time to resolution
INETCO offers monitoring that helps the customer to have a quick way to detect their problems. It shows quickly the root cause of problems, and can give specific details from the transaction (from when the transaction started). It shows a lot of details related to that transaction. * It's a non-intrusive solution. * It provides real-time information alerts. * We can have a real-time detection for the root cause of problems, minimizing time to resolution. The customer can save time and money because it's a way of detecting the root cause of problems. For banks, it helps customers from fraud that many banks are experiencing. Therefore, customers can be more secure in their transactions, and banks can monitor fraud.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"With the Agentless monitoring and ability to create custom plugins, we've been able to transform the tool not just into a great APM solution but a really good enterprise monitoring solution too."
"It supports Kubernetes and cloud monitoring platforms."
"Provides more insight into detecting what the problem is with some of our applications."
"We spend less time on troubleshooting issues since Dynatrace proactively informs us of an impending bottle neck."
"For stability, our customers have no complaints."
"We can be more productive and agile. It allows us to be more accurate when we need to work with bugs."
"It makes our lives easier as we drill down to problems."
"The ability to really drill into performance issues and help our application teams understand what is causing the business's problems."
"We can have a real-time detection for the root cause of problems, minimizing time to resolution."
"It provides real-time information alerts."
"This can help customers who already have a lot of monitoring providers consolidate what they have."

Cons

"I would say it's not scalable, because we've had to move large applications that were in a shared environment to their own separate Dynatrace server instance."
"Dashboards are too clumsy, so it is good to keep less on dashboards and be easier to find the sections."
"Documentation could be improved. E.g., you don't know how to properly use Dynatrace because documentation is almost lacking behind the features being deployed."
"There is another challenge, which is in case of the Managed solution. In our old solution we could simply export the data as session data, and that would be imported and seen. Now, if we are using the Managed solution, then giving someone access to that solution is a challenge. We can handle it, but it's different than taking screenshots and saving that information the way we used to. The copy/paste features that were there in old application - because it was a fat app - were nice, compared to browser-based app, because you cannot really use those features anymore."
"The configuration of this solution is quite complex."
"The thing that is preventing us from moving forward with Dynatrace right now is that we can't tag our customer traffic with a customizable tag. All of our students have a unique identifier and in AppMon we tag that and we can search by it very easily and it's very useful. But in Dynatrace, you can't yet customize and find people like that, so that's really preventing us. I heard that it's being worked on but I'm not sure when it's coming out."
"It often produces "false alarms" and cannot identify failure patterns over days/weeks that do not indicate concern."
"Make sure older frameworks, like PHP 5.3, are supported."
"It would help to have historical information."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Just go with Dynatrace. Just start with Dynatrace. Do not go into AppMon. Start with Dynatrace, because AppMon is going to give you so much extra stuff that 99% of your user base will not need it, including yourself."
"The licensing for Dynatrace is high. If you want to go for monitoring solutions, then why Dynatrace? If you have a particular budget, you can go for many other monitoring tools - apart from Dynatrace - and they can help you more and give more data than Dynatrace can. It's not worth the money that you spend for Dynatrace."
"I would recommend doing a PoC."
"It's more expensive than other solutions, but worth it. We use full APM monitoring on our primary systems, but only resource monitoring on lesser systems. We shift licenses around our environment when a deeper dive into lesser systems is required."
"The licensing model is confusing in solutioning clients for the number of hosts needed to deploy."
"Dynatrace has a place for everybody. How you use it and what your budgetary limitations are will dictate what you do with it. But it's within everybody's reach. If you're a small organization and you have a large infrastructure, you may not be able to monitor the whole thing. You may have to pick and choose what you want to monitor, and you have the ability to do so. Your available funds are going to dictate that."
"We are buying more licenses, because we are seeing more value."
"We found a tool that can be utilized by testing, DevOps, marketing, software engineering, and monitoring. Before, we always had everybody doing their own thing. Now, everybody's utilizing one tool, which is huge. That is a huge savings."
"Customers can save costs (time and money) by integrating with this tool."
