Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

Automation platforms streamline processes and offer flexibility, but AI integration and version upgrades pose challenges
In the technology world, there is always room for improvement. Technologies evolve day by day, especially with the emergence of artificial intelligence and generative AI models. Although IBM BPM is a substantial product, adopting and integrating new technologies quickly is not easy due to the migration and upgrade paths involved. Every time new versions are released, we face business and production challenges that make rapid adoption challenging. The main concern bothering me today regarding IBM BPM is the integration of AI components.

Powerful workflow definition enhances operational stability and efficiency
TIBCO ActiveMatrix BPM is powerful for defining workflows. It is low code, so you don't need a lot of coding, and tasks are just drag and drop. It is also very stable as we haven't had issues with it going down or encountering any operational issues for a long time. The stability and rich features in workflow definition make it a valuable tool.

Quotes from Members

Pros

"We are using the BPMN engine of Camunda; we are not using the user interface. We are using just the engine, the back end of this. For us, it is working quite well."
"It's user friendly, much better than most tools I have seen."
"By using Camunda, we could have the application process design, and we could quickly deploy the system to production and have the product early on the market."
"EC2 makes scaling horizontally incredibly easy, especially when working under the ECS service."
"The visibility – the diagrams you create – and then being able to automate based on them are valuable features. It's easy to explain and comprehend, and the integration aspects are valuable."
"We chose to use Camunda because it's open-source, easy to develop, and scalable, plus we were able to develop some of the enterprise features offered with the license in-house only."
"We are system integrators, and the value of Camunda for us is that it's easy to integrate into the products and applications we provide for our customers."
"The most valuable feature is the scheduling."
"The installation was straightforward."
"IBM BPM and Automation Anywhere working together automate manual tasks with a reduction in FTEs, creating about a 30% reduction in FTEs by automating processes."
"It helps improve your process through continual measurement."
"This is one of the best tools to support the business and the way we work, and the numerous processes we need to implement."
"It provides value and simplifies processes."
"Technical support is pleasant to work with and always available."
"It has improved my organization quite a bit. It brought awareness to what the business processes are, even to the business side, who did not necessarily know what they are."
"This solution has always been lacking in the user interface (UI), it needed to be improved a lot. However, from the acquisition of Spark UI, the UI is much better. Overall the solution is robust and has the ability to integrate with any product for complex workflows."
"It is the best product because of its stability, ActiveMatrix 5.x is highly stable in production and the downtime is very low, I have worked on a lot of service projects and the engine is very stable, robust, and scalable."
"The TIBCO product helped us solve an interfacing issue between platforms that may have been more difficult with other products."
"The workflow feature works very well, we also get very good notifications at each and every stage on where the installation process is, the integrations are very good, the scheduling and the calendar are very useful, and in the onboarding they integrate into our internal Active Directory so we don't have any problems with the BPM, it works."
"For specific situations this can be a good solution and a simplified interface to work with."
"TIBCO ActiveMatrix BPM is powerful for defining workflows."
"The customization is the most valuable feature, the BPM is very good, the interface is very user-friendly, and I like that it's an end-to-end product and complete solution."
"The product's initial setup phase is straightforward."
"TIBCO ActiveMatrix BPM is powerful for defining workflows."

Cons

"When addressing a complex and extensive process, the domain it belongs to, be it banking, healthcare, or HR, requires widespread access."
"It would be better if the tool were made less reliant on Java."
"The deployment model could be improved for easier implementation. More open documentation would be beneficial to understand the deployment process better and facilitate easier setup."
"In the future, I would definitely like to see the process administration (migration, audit, tracking) and process evaluation (optimize) features added to the community edition."
"Initial setup can be quite complex."
"The documentation could use improvement."
"If there were some industry templates it would have helped significantly, because it is similar to a process map for a domain. That is what we are currently creating, a domain-relevant process map."
"Customization and tech stack could be up-to-date."
"IBM BPM can improve the dashboards and reports. It only has two dashboards, and reporting is very difficult to build."
"We would like better performance and more visibility on each step of the tool."
"I would like IBM to consider including AI-enabled process mining, robotic process automation, and very good OCR capabilities from the computer vision side."
"We had hoped that the product would provide us with plug-ins like Salesforce. Its development environment needs to improve. We expect to see elastic features like containerization. We don't just need an on-prem virtual machine."
"Though I am quite satisfied with the product, and especially the introduction of responsive UI, I still believe that the overall development environment must be desktop based rather web based."
"The new web-based IDE has plenty of room for improvement."
"The business would like to use the product with a lot less IT and equipment involvement."
"IBM BPM lacks openness, that is, the ability to become open for new options in terms of APIs, front-end development, and ecosystem. IBM BPM has been quite closed. One of the main improvements would be to somehow embed the rules engine into IBM BPM. Merging IBM BRMS and the rules engine with IBM BPM would be helpful. If there was some simpler way to define rules without having to put IBM BRMS on top of it, it would be good. It's something that we can get out of Camunda but not out of IBM BPM."
"It is not lightweight and requires a lot of disk space, memory, and CPU."
"Technical support needs to be streamlined."
"The product is missing some means of addressing more complex BPM constructs and should interface with more platforms easily."
"TIBCO's transition to the cloud is a little slow. As compared to Dell, Boomi, and Mulesoft, TIBCO took the steps a little later."
"The connectivity right now is poor because not a lot of protocols are supported, so we had some trouble setting up a proper BPM connection to access cloud data."
"ActiveMatrix is in the middle field. MuleDB is more on the engineering side with Java and other things. SnapLogic is there are on the higher side with very low coding. TIBCO stays in the middle like IBM or Oracle. TIBCO can move towards IBM's way of doing. IBM has a big market and many varieties of products and good integration, which TIBCO doesn't have. It can have better integration. TIBCO's transition to the cloud is a little slow. As compared to Dell, Boomi, and Mulesoft. TIBCO took the steps a little later. TIBCO's ID was far better and easier to work with previously. TIBCO's 5.x ID was very good, and the development environment and the transition were easy. Version 6.5 onwards, it is a stable product, but it would be good if they can do something similar to version 5.4 with version 6. They should concentrate on this API market. It will give them the strength and the ability to grab the market back."
"Sometimes it's not stable, but it is a complete solution."
"The solution is crazy-expensive."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We pay for the license of this solution annually."
"I tried to get some information about buying the license for the solution, but I found it kind of hard to understand the business model."
"Camunda is much cheaper."
"Camunda has a free service as well as a commercial service. We are using the free service."
"In Africa, the cost of deployment is an important factor to consider since it adds to the overall cost. This might be the only drawback to using it."
"The cost of this solution is better than some competing products."
"Compared to other software, Camunda Platform is quite cost-effective."
"We are using the paid edition because there is no separate support and service license yet. We are yet to find a suitable licensing model for Camunda because we only use the engine, and we have implemented our solution around Camunda Cloud. So, we are mainly interested in the support and service, and that's what we mainly use in the paid edition."
"IBM BPM is expensive, so most large companies opt for IBM based on their licensing options."
"The solution is highly-priced."
"The cloud and license of the subscription model for IBM BPM can be complex. There are a lot of alternatives to choose from."
"IBM could improve the price. It is far too expensive."
"It may be cheaper for organizations to pay for the Viewer licenses that are immediately up and running in the cloud, rather than paying for someone to administer publishing to an intranet."
"I rate the tool's pricing a seven out of ten."
"Due to its extensive features and capabilities, the product pricing is more aligned with medium—to large enterprises."
"Price wise, IBM BPM is cheaper than other similar solutions and has excellent pricing."
"TIBCO ActiveMatrix BPM is an expensive tool compared to others."
"There are some discussions about perpetual licenses and conversions, but I'm not much familiar with them."
