Visual project planning enhances collaboration and proactive management
The dependency management in Microsoft Project is highly valuable, as it visually maps dependencies and impacts within a project plan. The online version facilitates easy collaboration without having to share multiple versions of the file. The Gantt chart is also a very powerful tool for a visual presentation of sequences, critical paths, and execution processes, which simplifies comprehension for users.

Good reporting, quick configurations, and helpful support
It's a cloud-based setup, so there's no challenge in getting everything up and running. The downtime should be minimal. I'd rate the process nine out of ten in terms of ease of deployment. There is a three-month implementation exercise that we control. We have five people who were part of the implementation and maintenance process. They are admins and web developers.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The dependency management in Microsoft Project is highly valuable, as it visually maps dependencies and impacts within a project plan."
"The solution offers excellent resource allocation tools and is flexible, particularly in portfolio management."
"It is easily adaptable. In addition, it is easily used on mobile applications."
"It is a scalable solution. We have been able to manage larger scale projects easily using this solution."
"The stability of the 2019 version is quite good."
"The scheduling feature is the most useful."
"Microsoft Project Server is simple to use."
"The most valuable feature of the Microsoft Project Server is the level of detail with which I can break down a task and check the dependencies."
"The reporting part is very good."

Cons

"Microsoft doesn't always have all the answers, and they rely more on communities. Their support tends to decline when not supporting cloud solutions, and there is often an attempt to upsell alternate products rather than solve problems."
"The main drawback of Microsoft Project Server is that it is offline. Having it online would offer better access to other managers."
"The user interface looks quite old and needs to be improved."
"The reporting aspects can be improved, which is one of the reasons why I'm using Qlik Sense. In the older on-prem versions, reporting was lackluster, to say the least. Project Online has a better handle on that. However, we will still be using Qlik Sense. We're also looking at an add-on app from a company called OnePlan that adds some additional functionality where Microsoft is not as clean in its approach for things such as portfolio management and some of the trends analysis."
"I'd like it if we could divide out the project calendars. On one project server, we might follow five projects or more at one time, and we'd like to see all of the items at once so that it becomes a long loop, but one where we can identify different projects in tandem and then focus on which we need to at the time. While I only have visibility into one, I'd like to see several at a time."
"It needs to be more collaborative from inside the application. It only does project scheduling for me. It would be good if it could do other things and be more collaborative, such as sharing tasks for users. It is not really incorporated into MS Office, so you can't copy-paste stuff. It is on its own, doing its own thing. It is only used for scheduling, and it doesn't work well with anything else."
"Microsoft Project Server's user interface is pretty average, and sometimes it can have bugs."
"We sometimes need support from the IT department for installing and deploying the Microsoft Project Server. It is not user-friendly, and users cannot install it themselves."
"Some of the reports could be automated."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is an annual license required for this solution."
"The licensing was procured before my involvement."
"It is an inexpensive product."
"It is on the expensive side."
"The price of the Microsoft Project Server could improve, it is expensive here in Africa. When comparing Microsoft Project Server to Oracle Primavera for us, Microsoft Project Server is quite cost-effective."
"A standard license is cheaper, but if you want more features, then there is a premium license or professional license."
"We pay an annual licensing fee for the solution."
"Microsoft Project Server is more expensive than other solutions on the market. We purchase the license annually."
