It dramatically improved our ability to detect secrets, saved us time, and reduced our mean time to remediation
While they do offer some basic reporting, more comprehensive reporting would be beneficial in the long run. This would allow me to demonstrate the value of the product over time to continue to effectively budget for this subscription, especially as they add features that may come at an additional cost. I appreciate the improvements made to reporting over the past year, but continued development in this area will be appreciated. We have encountered occasional difficulties with the Single Sign-On process. There is room for improvement in its current implementation. It works, but was not quite as smooth as the rest of the GitGuardian experience.

Versatile with good patching and a straightforward setup
There is some fine-tuning needed, even once you define something. We need to do a lot of configuration. It would be easier if they made the configuration simpler, especially in the beginning. They need to give the user more choices and provide more guidance to help avoid problems later on. We'd like some more built-in predictive analytics so we can be prepared for what might happen in the future. We did have some bandwidth issues during setup. If your update fails, you may have stability issues. We find it difficult to reach higher levels of support when we face larger issues.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"A high number of our exposures are remediated by developers before security needs to step in, as the self-healing playbook process engages them automatically. This results in issues being resolved within minutes, saving significant effort from the security team in tracking down or communicating with developers."
"The most valuable feature is the general incident reporting system."
"The majority of our incidents for critical detectors and important secret types are remediated automatically or proactively by developers through GitGuardian's notification system, without security team involvement."
"When they give you a description of what happened, it's really easy to follow and to retest. And the ability to retest is something that you don't have in other solutions. If a secret was detected, you can retest if it is still there. It will show you if it is in the history."
"GitGuardian has helped to increase our security team's productivity. Now, we don't need to call the developers all the time and ask what they are working on. I feel the solution bridged the gap between our team and the developers, which is really great. I feel that we need that in our company, since some of the departments are just doing whatever and you don't know what they are doing. I think GitGuardian does a good job of bridging the gap. It saves us about 10 hours per week."
"It's also worth mentioning that GitGuardian is unique because they have a free tier that we've been using for the first twelve months. It provides full functionality for smaller teams. We're a smaller company and have never changed in size, but we got to the point where we felt the service brought us value, and we want to pay for it. We also wanted an SLA for technical support and whatnot, so we switched to a paid plan. Without that, they had a super-generous, free tier, and I was immensely impressed with it."
"GitGuardian has many features that fit our use cases. We have our internal policies on secret exposure, and our code is hosted on GitLab, so we need to prevent secrets from reaching GitLab because our customers worry that GitLab is exposed. One of the great features is the pre-receive hook. It prevents commits from being pushed to the repository by activating the hook on the remotes, which stops the developers from pushing to the remote. The secrets don't reach GitLab, and it isn't exposed."
"It enables us to identify leaks that happened in the past and remediate current leaks as they happen in near real-time. When I say "near real-time," I mean within minutes. These are industry-leading remediation timelines for credential leaks. Previously, it might have taken companies years to get credentials detected or remediated. We can do it in minutes."
"The solution is stable."
"The interface showcases threat incidents very well."
"The most valuable feature is strong data leak prevention for data protection."
"The most valuable feature right now is the user control."
"The stability of the solution can be good. However, the configuration takes a long time for it to be done properly."
"The administrative capabilities and the interface make this product accessible and easy to use."
"The most valuable feature is the ability to control access to USB drives and other external devices."
"I am impressed with the tool's firewalls and web protection."

Cons

"It would be nice if they supported detecting PII or had some kind of data loss prevention feature."
"GitGuardian Platform does what it is designed to do, but it still generates many false positives."
"There has been a little bit of downtime of late, and it has been reasonably impactful when it's not been scanning."
"We'd like to request a new GitGuardian feature that automates user onboarding and access control for code repositories."
"Automated Jira tickets would be fantastic. At the moment, I believe we have to go in and click to create a Jira ticket. It would be nice to automate."
"GitGuardian encompasses many secrets that companies might have, but we are a Microsoft-only organization, so there are some limitations there in terms of their honey tokens. I'd like for it to not be limited to Amazon-based tokens. It would be nice to see a broader set of providers that you could pick from."
"There is room for improvement in its integration for bug-tracking. It should be more direct. They have invested a lot in user management, but they need to invest in integrations. That is a real lack."
"We have encountered occasional difficulties with the Single Sign-On process."
"The user interface is messy and could be simplified."
"It could improve how it deals with solar data."
"We need to do a lot of configuration."
"We faced many issues with the solution's customer support, and it should be made customer-friendly and more responsive."
"Integration with other vendors could be improved. For example, with Chrome or Firefox."
"The interface can be improved, it's too cluttered."
"McAfee Total Protection for Data Loss Prevention could improve by having artificial intelligence."
"McAfee needs to clarify its rules."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It's fairly priced, as it performs a lot of analysis and is a valuable tool."
"With GitGuardian, we didn't need any middlemen."
"I compared the solution to a couple of other solutions, and I think it is very competitively priced."
"We don't have a huge number of users, but its yearly rate was quite reasonable when compared to other per-seat solutions that we looked at... Having a free plan for a small number of users was really great. If you're a small team, I don't see why you wouldn't want to get started with it."
"The pricing is reasonable. GitGuardian is one of the most recent security tools we've adopted. When it came time to renew it, there was no doubt about it. It is licensed per developer, so it scales nicely with the number of repos that we have. We can create new repositories and break up work. It isn't scaling based on the amount of data it's consuming."
"The internal side is cheap per user. It is annual pricing based on the number of users."
"We have seen a return on investment. The amount of time that we would have spent manually doing this definitely outpaces the cost of GitGuardian. It is saving us about $35,000 a year, so I would say the ROI is about $20,000 a year."
"The pricing for GitGuardian is fair."
"The price of the solution could improve, it is expensive. We typically sell one and three-year licenses."
"The price of the solution could improve."
"McAfee Total Protection for Data Loss Prevention is an expensive solution."
"There is an annual license to use this solution."
"Licensing fees are paid on a yearly basis."
"It's not a cheap option."
"I'm paying the license for McAfee Total Protection yearly. It could be cheaper, but it's fine."
"The price of McAfee Total Protection for Data Loss Prevention is expensive. It is not the most expensive solution but it is typically 15 to 20 percent higher than other solutions. There is no additional cost to using McAfee Total Protection for Data Loss Prevention."
