Data integration has improved reserving and expense control while collaboration drives fast dashboards
Regarding drawbacks or weak points in Microsoft Power BI, it may not be directly related to the tool itself, but with our architecture, as we couldn't get a service account, which is an email address that has no relationship with the employees, just to establish the connection with Anaplan. We couldn't get it to work on SSO, so we use an employee account which could be a point of weakness, meaning if the person leaves, that connection will break. If the person goes on holiday and we need to refresh, we have to change the connection as well, but we have to live with that since we're not using SSO on the service account. Regarding the natural language processing feature, we're trying to avoid using it too much because it can slow down the connection, so as much as possible, we try to build the logic and any transformation in Anaplan, and then deliver an end product to Microsoft Power BI.

Python dashboards have transformed employment data into interactive insights for better decisions
The main improvement I can think of is that while creating charts, it gives you a certain format of how it could look. If you want to create something extra and go more vivid and creative with how the actual chart would look, it allows for that option but could be improved to be more artistic or aesthetically pleasing. This sort of format is missing, and I think it would be beneficial to the analytics team if it can be more interactive, with the capability of D3.js, and give us more control over how our actual dashboard would look to achieve a more aesthetic appearance. The strict format of how you can shape those charts and that extra nuance you need to keep in code to get the exact possible results are the reasons behind my rating. The rest of the features provided by Plotly are extremely good.

Ease of developing dashboards and receiving strong technical support have enabled efficient data visualization
Introducing custom features, such as NLP-based reports, is not very good in Tableau. My MD has been asking us for a way to write in natural language to request reports that the system should generate, but that isn't very effective with Tableau. As a developer, I can develop an on-demand report in Python quite easily, but exposing a REST API on the Tableau platform is not a very easy task. AI enablement is an area for improvement for Tableau, and that is something they might have to work upon. I have heard that ThoughtSpot is quite better in this regard, but the cost of ThoughtSpot is much higher. ThoughtSpot has lots of natural language-based report generation features that Tableau lacks.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is very good, and it supports the Microsoft ecosystem, including Excel, etc."
"What I have found valuable about Microsoft BI is its performance and ease of use."
"It's easy to create reports and it's easy to download the data from the corresponding report."
"It is a good platform for data analysis, organization, and all of the other interim performances that are necessary."
"This product is good in terms of cost, it is pretty easy to implement, and I can recommend it for those features and the reporting."
"It is stable, has good functionality, is fully integrated with Microsoft products, and is very user-friendly."
"Connectivity, installation, and configuration are pretty fast and seamless compared to Cognos."
"The business users have taken to Microsoft BI like a duck to water."
"The level of interactivity that the product provides is valuable to me."
"When reviewing and interpreting data, I typically examine it in a tabular form to understand its structure. However, when explaining or presenting the findings to others, I often use visualization tools such as Plotly. These tools allow me to create visual representations of datasets."
"Plotly Dash Enterprise helps us achieve a much more interactive and vivid form of visualization for our organization, which helps us drive better results and analytics."
"It is a scalable solution. Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a nine to ten out of ten."
"The best features Plotly Dash Enterprise offers are the fact that it is built on Python and the fact that we can customize many things."
"The product offers an intuitive user interface, detailed screens and widgets, and the absence of data limitations"
"You can create attractive dashboards that inform users using Tableau."
"The most attractive feature for our users is the ease of visualizing data in a meaningful manner."
"The feature that is currently most valuable is the import feature where I can link to an Excel data source; I directly link it to an Excel sheet, and if I change anything in that Excel sheet, the changed data immediately gets reflected in the visualization, which is very convenient for me as of now."
"Gradual scalability from simple to complex situations"
"Users can generate reports by themselves, while IT people can focus on the database management."
"All the features are valuable."
"Self-service is most valuable. Users can pick up quickly and do the resolution. There are a lot of out-of-the-box features, and it satisfies most of the needs. If users are properly trained, they can deal with any situation."

Cons

"I would prefer that the solution not be shared. I'm concerned that if we make a mistake we could reveal information to people who shouldn't see it. I would like to have my own on-prem server, to buy my own server and have my own infrastructure for Microsoft BI, with only with my data."
"I think that they can make the solution easy to use for people who are not experts in data because many clients try to use it, but they need to be prepared before using it."
"The desktop tool is very memory-intensive, and again, this is not documented clearly; it requires heavy CPU and memory use, and it causes your operating systems to become unstable."
"I'm not overly technical, and so I can't really speak to any shortcomings from a technical standpoint."
"It is not the right tool to do deeper analysis or predictions. When you have some data and you want to do some deep analysis, there is no feature to help you with this."
"I think that the product would benefit by increasing the range of visuals and graphics readily available, as opposed to using a third party included as part of the product."
"The setup took a lot of tinkering with InfoSec to allow us to do stuff."
"I am a SAP user and I would like this tool to have more connectors - and to more easily connect to - the ERP or SAP environment."
"The tool needs to improve its pie charts. Regarding Plotly, I find the online documentation somewhat challenging to navigate, especially when dealing with many parameters. Searching through thousands of parameters can be a tedious and less straightforward process. While the documentation is available online and serves its purpose, I often encounter difficulties in finding the information."
"I believe that the prices of the tool's paid services could be on the premium side, so the pricing model can be considered for improvement."
"The solution cannot be deployed on the website and shared with others through its own platform."
"The main improvement I can think of is that while creating charts, it gives you a certain format of how it could look."
"Provide additional enhancements in any business process: Operations, Marketing and Sales, Finance, Human Resources, Logistics, etc."
"At the organizational level, increasing the servers' capabilities to support us as an enterprise tool."
"There should be more widgets that would help less trained individuals create charts with less difficulty."
"Tableau has a robust design UI and presentation layer, but lacks many of the capabilities of an enterprise BI solution."
"I had to spend a good amount of time to create them via multiple workarounds."
"When I've done presentations in the past, I've had issues with uploading the cartography."
"Pace of improvement to product has slowed."
"The look and feel of the tool itself, including the dashboard features and data visualization, could be improved. The graphs in Tableau also have room for improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Power BI's price is reasonable, especially if you can put it in some bigger package and use it with other products. The value of a solution doesn't just come from its features as a standalone product. The price should also reflect how easy it's to set up, clean data, and integrate with other solutions."
"It would be better if the price was cheaper."
"All in all, for the price, this is an excellent tool for helping your organization turn mounds of data into useful insights."
"It's straightforward licensing."
"It is a cheap solution for our needs."
"Setup is easy, and the cost is economical. You do sometimes need to pay additional costs for third party products which "plug-in" to Microsoft BI."
"Its licensing cost is very high. It is $20 per user, which is very high, but it is a good product, so you pay for it."
"They are charging us by users in storage, and there is a license fee. My financial people handle all that. The client has already worked out a contract with Microsoft, and basically, we're getting government prices."
"It is an open-source tool. My company hasn't explored Plotly's premium services yet, but I believe the prices could be on the premium side."
"I only use the free tier of the product."
"Tableau is not as cost-effective as Microsoft BI."
"Its cost is quite high. A corporate license costs about 150-200K per year for all the users, but there was probably some discounted amount. This cost includes everything."
"One of the biggest drawbacks of Tableau is the price, it is expensive. The price should be reduced."
"Tableau's prices are relatively high for our market. I am from Serbia, so many companies in this market don't have the ability to pay for expensive software. My clients are quite satisfied with a lot of Tableau's qualities except for the prices."
"Its price is higher than Power BI and QlikView. Tableau costs around $70 per user per month, whereas Power BI is around $8 to $9. QlikView is around $30. Tableau has various prices for various models such as Creator, Designer."
"If they want to be competitive in the market, the price must be improved."
"Tableau is an expensive solution compared to Power BI."
"It is a bit overpriced."
