The hub-and-spoke setup is useful because I can manage security from where I am, while the IT engineers in branch offices can handle it on their end.
When we're upgrading, it's sometimes quite challenging, especially firmware. We usually don't upgrade unless we have a bug, and we still feel it's not safe to react instead of being proactive. We often have some delays when updating FortiGuard, too. Nevertheless, I believe that it's okay most of the time with proper management. We also run into some problems using FortiGate as a UTM solution. I feel like maybe they're not giving me a full view of the other components that they have in that box. Their box has some DDoS defense, but I need complete DDoS protection. I must not have light DDoS protection on other UTM boxes because if I'm uncertain about the security posture, it will compromise me. We like having everything in one box because running multiple boxes eats up more resources on the computing level. We need a total solution, not half-half.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"FortiGate Cloud boosts productivity because one solution covers all the requirements, features, and management functions. Staff can operate it with less security knowledge, so it decreases the workload of our security specialists. Anyone with training on the console can manage access to users and devices based on standardized structural services."
"The main advantage of FortiGate Cloud is its reliability, scalability, and pricing."
"Everything is valuable, especially the SD-WAN tunneling, filtering of email, application, and browsing. Everything has value."
"We use the solution for routing and cloud security. We have multiple offices nationwide, all connected through the MPRS network, which is terminated at our FortiGate firewall. We consolidate our networks, filter packets, and segment our network through this firewall. My company has around three lakh firewalls."
"The most valuable feature of Fortinet FortiGate Cloud is the logs are stored longer on this cloud version. If you have the on-premise version you will not be able to store the logs for more than one or two months."
"The installation is very simple."
"The security features, for example, URL filtering, AMP, and advanced threat protection, are very valuable."
"The functionality of the solution is excellent."
"The entire ease of use is most valuable. If you're managing firewalls locally with PAN-OS, the look and feel of Panorama is the same. So, you don't have to relearn another product. If you're used to managing firewalls from Palo Alto, you can easily use Panorama to manage them. It looks and feels the same."
"It is really useful for big deployments."
"One of the key advantages of Palo Alto Networks Panorama is its unified platform that is quite similar to the firewall interface, making it easier for tech consultants to manage."
"From a configuration point of view, when we are implementing it for large organizations where the customer owns a hundred firewalls, it's just easy to manage them all at one central location."
"The management and the deployment features are most valuable. We can easily deploy and manage the devices. We can do fast deployments without moving from our office and by just providing a short description to the end-user about how to install the physical device."
"One valuable feature is centralized management. We are able to manage it centrally for two to three remote offices, our head office and our data centers. So, it is very simple to manage."
"The most valuable item is centralization and we can get all of the router bases in a single window."
"The telemetry visibility is really good as well as the automated workflows for creating policies. The overall solution is quite intuitive to use."

Cons

"There are some areas that need improvement regarding customer support."
"I would like to see more reporting from the analysis improved in the future."
"I would like to see Wi-Fi management inside the firewall."
"The capacity to execute the solution needs to be improved. I would like to see management and analytics included in the solution."
"Improving the platform's intuitiveness and consolidating functionalities, such as reporting and firewall features, could enhance user experience and reduce the need for multiple product purchases."
"If you need to scale, you do need to trade up to a new Fortinet solution."
"The Linux version currently lacks some of the latest features, notably in the IPv6 tool stack, which is available for Windows clients."
"Some reports generated from Fortinet FortiGate Cloud are very organizational. It would be beneficial to allow the customers customization of reports."
"There is room for improvement in response time for tech support."
"There is always room for improvement in anything."
"There is a need to improve the upgrade process. When we are upgrading the solution we are facing some issues with Elasticsearch services. Every time we upgrade it takes a long time to become stable."
"It would be beneficial to improve the capabilities of Panorama to handle logs more efficiently, potentially reducing the need for additional local collectors. Adding more predefined dashboards as features would enhance the monitoring and reporting capabilities."
"The integration between Strata Cloud Manager and Panorama could be enhanced to allow customers to stay on Panorama for many years while still utilizing Strata Cloud Manager for deployment."
"Price is probably one of the biggest things that we struggle with, specifically with Palo, and that's across their whole portfolio."
"We had some challenges with the initial setup, but it was more on a learning curve basis."
"At times we have noticed that we get into issues where Panorama is going too slow or has other little problems. The performance can suffer occasionally."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution's pricing is good compared to that of Cisco and Meraki devices."
"The license for Fortinet FortiGate Cloud is annual."
"As with us, our customers need not pay for a license. One brings one's own."
"The pricing is competitive."
"It's relatively cheap."
"Fortinet has only an annual payment method. There is no monthly payment option. They have only one standard license without any additional features."
"Fortinet has a good price, and I would give it a four out of five. There are no additional fees."
"While pricing could be more competitive, it ultimately depends on the client's budget and specific feature requirements."
"You can buy the hardware only and each box is not even $10,000. It's only $8,000 for the unit itself. However, then you are charged a three-year license at $81,000."
"There is a license needed to use Palo Alto Networks Panorama. The cost is not that important, what is important is meeting all the requirements and security features."
"With the URL filtering, we probably went down from around four hours in response time to about five minutes."
"It is not a cheap solution."
"The licensing is not cheap. There are always hidden costs. You have support costs, or maybe you need to buy more optics on how the solution fits into the rest of your environment. It is possible some of the rest of your environment will need to change too."
"Palo Alto is costly compared to Fortinet and Sophos."
"Its cost is quite high."
"The solution is priced a bit higher than competitors."
