  • Ease of Deployment: For the most part, users of Commvault felt that unless you have a high level of technical knowledge, it is rather difficult to deploy and that not just anyone can set up this solution. The opposite is true of Veeam Backup Replication, whose reviewers feel that for the most part it is easy and straightforward to deploy.
  • Features: Commvault has many valuable features, including its ability to integrate with many different platforms, encryption to protect from ransomware, as well as its compression and duplication features. However, users say that the Commvault console is rather complex and takes a long time to learn. They contend that the console should be easier to use. Additionally, they say that it could use better data backup for the Office 365 platform. Among Veeam Backup Replication’s most valuable features are its ability to scale up in a variety of environments, its adaptability, and its intuitive interface. Reviewers of Veeam Backup Replication feel that there is much room for its scalability to improve, though. They also write that Veeam Backup Replication’s reporting feature could use some work.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We specialize in Commvault and IntelliSnap. Commvault covers all our customers' backup needs in one system, and they have complete control over their Snapshot backups. Snapshots are important to our customers because of the size of their data sets.""I like the product because of its simplicity and the fact that it provides one single interface for managing everything, including storage, data, and policies.""I can collect the target data, then we connect it to Commvault. There is not another system that can connect to our target database or target storage. This is very important for us, because there is the threat of malware right now. This can protect not only the product, but also the backup data from outside threats.""Commvault is very simple to use and it is automated.""Commvault helps to ensure broad coverage with the discovery of unprotected workloads. This is important. From the moment that we set it up, we mostly have customers telling us what they need to back up. Then, you can list the machines that are not yet protected. Sometimes, we can see that they are unaware of this, and say, "We didn't know that those servers were not protected yet," or "We did not back them up yet."""The email archiving feature is very smooth and better than others.""Commvault can perform a backup no matter where you are, and it takes a backup every four hours. No matter when you come to the office, it'll take a backup if you're connected to the internet and check the system for online availability.""It never fails. Sometimes we miss a backup, but there's always a reason for it, and it's not the fault of Commvault. In the last three years, we've never had to open a ticket with Commvault."

"The replication is the most valuable feature for us.""Veeam Backup Replication's most valuable features are the ease of use, good integration with others solutions, such as Oracle ERP, and by using the UI you can create and achieve operations you want to do.""Veeam Backup Replication's snapshotting and cloning are the most valuable features.""One of the most valuable features is the incremental backup. It is, of course, perfect because you have a lot of restore points, but you don't need all the space. The stability is also perfect.""The most valuable feature is the instant recovery.""The solution just works consistently. I never have issues with it.""It's got a very good user-friendly interface. It's easy to use.""The solution is stable and the performance is good."

Cons
"I would assess the Command Center as a very useful but sometimes difficult tool. It is multipurpose. It has all the features of logging and monitoring, especially for the actual setup. For us, it is easy because we work daily with it, but for customers who only use it once a week, they sometimes have some difficulties. Command Center is not user-friendly for beginners.""Commvault is complex even if the product has comprehensive solutions and covers pretty much every technology out there. There's no unified way to manage all of the products on one single console.""The tool must improve the 1-Touch recovery of Oracle and Active Directory.""Commvault is a rich system that might scare somebody the first time they see it because it feels so huge.""Commvault Complete Data Protection would benefit from improving their training resources.""When you deploy Complete Data Protection for past services, it's more complicated because you cannot directly back up from the previous service host. We have to build a proxy server, like a middleware, to directly access the past database server. It's complex and hard for beginners to figure out.""Commvault has two management dashboards. The first is the CommCell Console, which is Java-based, and the second is Command Center. We don't always find all the features we need in the Command Center and we need to go through the Java console, and sometimes features are only on the Java console.""Commvault could make the product more cost-effective on the public cloud side. We are using this solution to back up whatever is still on-prem. We are not using it to back up what is on the public cloud because we have a native backup solution for that, which is provided by the vendor. As our footprint gets bigger, we will continue to evaluate this, but the last time that we did a cost analysis, the cost was not comparable to the solution that public clouds are offering."

More Commvault Complete Data Protection Cons →

"Physical backup is always where room for improvement could be but Veeam has always stated they are not going in that direction.""The Veeam portal should be better integrated with all the parts of the new release. But there's always a workaround to replicate the new solution. I'd like to have better integration with other solutions like SAP.""There is room for improvement in the application backups, particularly for Oracle and SaaS systems. Veeam Backup & Replication offers a plugin specifically designed for Oracle and SAP HANA databases. In version twelve, they introduced enhancements that allow deploying the plugin from the backup server. However, manual configuration is still required on each server to schedule the backup and specify the backup repository. Additionally, transitioning from a Windows server to a Linux server requires converting the existing model. Previously, Veeam heavily relied on Windows and Microsoft SQL databases for their solution. Fortunately, in version twelve, they introduced an enhancement by offering the option to use a Postgres SQL database, which is an open-source alternative.""It would be preferable if they could introduce a complete Linux version instead of relying solely on Microsoft for management. There should be a unified integration of all their products. Currently, there are various products like cloud backup and others that exist separately. It would be better if they could create a single comprehensive platform or product, as opposed to having disparate products that lack proper communication between them.""If you upgrade too quickly, you may have issues.""The endpoint protection console is not centralized.""My main concern about Veeam is that I hope our backups will still be secure in the event of a security incident such as a ransomware attack. In Veeam version 11 they do state that there is ransomware protection, but until it has been proven to be effective, I don't have any assurance that it will prevent data loss.""I have used NetBackup. For heavy workloads or if I need consistent backup and restore, I prefer NetBackup over Veeam Backup Replication."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is a bit more than other products, but when you consider the time savings, it is saving money."
  • "Commvault's license fee is per server-based."
  • "You have to pay for the licenses and the hardware you need for the Commvault environment. If you don't have all the hardware, you have to buy it, which can cost a few million. In the end, it's vital to protect our data, so the price isn't an issue."
  • "Compared with other backup technologies, Commvault is a bit more costly, but we are satisfied with the support, the services, and the features that we get with Commvault."
  • "It is quite expensive when compared to other applications in the market. Its license is completely based on workload capacity. If I buy a license for 100 terabytes, I can back up anything. I can back up any platform, technology, or application, which is an advantage. Previously, we had to buy an agent for a particular application, and the cost was different for each agent. Now, the cost is completely based on the storage capacity. The license for one terabyte can cost around $1,700 for backing up anything from your environment."
  • "The cost for Commvault is very expensive, even support is very expensive. The full cost of the solution is 50,000 INR per year, which includes 20 VM backups, server data backup, and 200 desktop and laptop agent licenses."
  • "Commvault is more expensive than Veeam, which is the reason that we are changing to Veeam for cloud environments."
  • "Commvault is quite high in terms of pricing and licensing."
  • More Commvault Complete Data Protection Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It is relatively cheap."
  • "We have a yearly perpetual license."
  • "The price of Veeam Backup & Replication is reasonable compared to IBM."
  • "I understand from management that the DR component is too expensive."
  • "When I did a tech refresh, we took out a subscription for the coming five years."
  • "The price is reasonable."
  • "It is always nice to get products cheaper. Technically, it saves you a lot of money. If you wanted to buy the same functionality out of vSphere, you would spend thousands to essentially get the same functionality."
  • "The licensing is the worst part of Veeam Backup Replication because for the more complex situations and it's quite difficult and complex. In particular, when mixing different requirements the licensing model is complex. For example, mixing a virtual machine backup and a file server backup in the same installation can be somewhat difficult and is expensive."

    Reviews from Real Users

Sheron B. a systems engineer at PAREXEL International Corporation writes, “I like that you have complete hooks into and total control of your data. The data is well-protected. It doesn't age off until it's copied. That's a big feature right there. When you reach the end of your retention, it does not expire until the secondary copy is completed. That allows you to hold onto data that otherwise would have aged off by retention. I like that feature. It's hard to just delete or lose data using the Commvault platform.

PeerSpot users note the effectiveness of Commvault. An engineer at a tech services company writes, "When it comes to recovery, Commvault is undeniably one of the best technologies out there. It's got all the different granularity levels that a business requires to get your information back to production. For example, we have their commission discovery, individual items recovery, mailbox recovery, databases, and different tables. Some databases can be recovered individually. This level of granularity enables us to get the most value out of the product."

    Reviews from Real Users

Veeam Backup & Replication is a solution that stands out when compared to many of its competitors. Some of its major advantages are its ease of set up, the fact that it is agentless, and that it has an intuitive dashboard.

A Network Operations Manager at an educational organization says, "Integration with VMware is excellent with very granular recovery."

An Inside Solutions Architect at a tech services company mentions, “I like that it's agent-less, easy to set up, and hardware-agnostic.”

An Account Manager at a tech services company states, “The dashboard is very, very easy to understand. We do demonstrations all the time with customers just to show them. If they've lost particular files because of a server going down, we can retrieve those files for them and quickly bring those files back up.”

Kerem C., Director of Professional Services/Senior Solution Architect/Trainer at a tech services company, explains, “It's good for backup performance management and backup window management.”
