Executive Summary
Updated on Jun 27, 2023

We performed a comparison between Azure Monitor and New Relic based on real PeerSpot user reviews in five categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.

  • Ease of Deployment: While some users found Azure Monitor easy to set up, others found it to be complex and tedious. On the other hand, New Relic's setup is generally considered to be straightforward and simple. Some users even mentioned that it could be accomplished with just a few commands in PowerShell or batch.
  • Features: Azure Monitor is highly customizable and offers log analysis and reporting. It also integrates well with Microsoft technologies. New Relic, on the other hand, provides in-depth application information and traceability. Its pricing is straightforward and it has a simple user interface. Both options have versatile features that can benefit users.
  • Pricing: Azure Monitor charges based on log file sizing and is pay-as-you-go, while New Relic charges for a monthly or yearly license with additional fees for extra features or data ingestion. Some users find Azure Monitor to be more affordable, while others find New Relic to be more reasonable. However, pricing is a potential drawback for both solutions.
  • Service and Support: The quality of customer service provided by Azure Monitor and New Relic is inconsistent among users. Some have found the support to be responsive and helpful, while others have had negative experiences. Similarly, opinions on New Relic's support vary, with some considering it very good and others suggesting room for improvement in terms of speed and accuracy.
  • ROI: Some users have found that Azure Monitor's affordability has resulted in a positive return on investment. The platform's ease of deployment has also led to increased visibility. On the other hand, some users have had a less favorable experience with Azure Monitor. New Relic APM has also been credited with providing a favorable ROI for some users, although there are mixed opinions. One user highlighted the significance of having an APM and the resulting ROI.

Comparison Results: Azure Monitor is praised for its lower cost, better integration with Microsoft technologies, and its ability to monitor cloud resources across multiple subscriptions. Although New Relic is easy to use and provides in-depth application information, it is criticized for its pricing structure and lack of network monitoring features. Azure Monitor also offers valuable resources for new users with customizable templates and best practices from Microsoft. Overall, Azure Monitor is regarded as a strong and dependable product that offers excellent value for its cost.

Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"You can scale the product.""Data exporting is easy, and this tool works seamlessly with other solutions. It's a stable and low-priced solution.""The tools for logs and metrics are pretty good and easy to use.""I am monitoring all of my Azure Monitor and getting good reports. I can customize the reports to get the information I need. I am also getting emails about which AAS instances are down and everything in the system related to my services. It is easy to use, scalable, and user-friendly. Microsoft has Many guides and videos to help you understand how to create and use Azure Monitor.""The dashboard allows us to easily track various metrics and quickly understand the overall health of our system.""The tool's most valuable feature is the alert system, which can be set according to our metrics. The integration is smooth.""It is a move-in powerful feature compared to other market-leading tools.""The initial setup is straightforward."

"The solution is quite stable.""It gives insights to non-technical people about what technical issues are most important, how much it impacts customers, and potentially, where we should be targeting our development teams when they have time.""It is a software solution as a service, so I don't have to manage it on-premise.""New Relic has helped us in terms of the optimizing our print and loading times.""We like the performance of the product.""They instrument up from the bottom to the top – every piece of code - they have a very perfect read of what’s being done, and how long it’s taking.""As soon as it monitors all our systems and is integrated with PagerDuty, the operations team just needs to wait for alerts on their cellphones to fix things.""The solution is scalable, and it is easy because all the documentation is available."

Cons
"Setting up this solution is complex. It's also missing the functionality of assigning alerts.""It's really complex to retrieve or query the logs in Azure Monitor.""This solution could be improved with more out-of-the-box functionalities and artificial intelligence to complete event correlation.""We cannot use AI services with the solution.""They need to work with other cloud providers - not just Azure.""Automation related to gathering metrics from more applications could be improved.""Azure Monitor is not user-friendly, and the interface is not exciting. Switching between the dashboards is not easy.""The length of latency is terrible and needs to be improved."

More Azure Monitor Cons →

"They don't have an opportunity to share the dashboard with the public. If you want to share it with stakeholders or people outside the organization who just want to have a look at a couple of metrics, you can't do that without onboarding them to the product itself.""Data Dog captures the entire session and then provides it as a video player path, which gives more insight into what the user was doing. It's pretty impressive. New Relic does that, yet it only captures using a couple of screenshots, which is not very detailed since you are unable to see the entire user flow.""The integration and configuration of this product in our AWS environment needs improvement on the filtering part. I would like it to go more granular on accounts.""Some AIOps are missing in New Relic APS, and I would like to see more features in this area.""It is complicated, especially in how you interpret the data that it provides. If it had a bit more canned, out-of-the-box features, especially some of the reporting features, that would be more useful.""There are times when you restart the engines and the servers have a unique ID for the host and you need to remove the server. It is difficult because some are on-premise and others are production hosts. Having downtime is not very good when updating. However, it is not a constant issue.""Documentation could be improved in New Relic APM, so users would have more clarity on configuring the dashboard. If New Relic gave better guidelines, users would find it easier to understand the metrics and features of New Relic APM. Another area for improvement is integration with Kubernetes. Currently, the process isn't user-friendly. It's challenging and lacks documentation for users to understand how to integrate New Relic APM with Kubernetes quickly. With multiple levels of Kubernetes dockers and other DBs on different clouds, it's tricky to gather all into New Relic APM on a single dashboard. What I'd like to see in the next version of New Relic APM is a single dashboard where you can easily view which applications fall under specific APMs. If there's a search feature where you can type in a keyword to find out if an APM is related to a particular application, that would be great.""One thing I'd like to see in any APM, especially New Relic, is the ability to use distributed transactions. When one microservice calls another, it calls another database and microservice. The entire data visualization layer will not be able to correlate from one microservice from end to end and return on that path. Distributed transactions would be a great addition that would make life simpler. Unfortunately, no APM has that end-to-end capability."

  • More Azure Monitor Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "New Relic is either free with low retention and minimal functionalities, or expensive with full options and retention."
  • "The monthly cost os $1000 per server per month, but it could be even more. We pay about $250 for the server, and then New Relic wants over $1000 to give us statistics on those servers."
  • "Cost is significant with a lot of extras."
  • "It would be nice if we could buy it annually instead of monthly."
  • "If it’s the right tool, it doesn’t matter what it costs because you’re going to get it back many-fold from your productivity."
  • "I recommend using the free version of New Relic. If you like the free version and understand its importance for your company, you can move to the trial. Then, you can migrate to the paid version."
  • "There is a picture which goes to your browser and it monitors requests from other users. However, it's impossible to use now because the price is very high. The feature is very nice, but I tried it during the trial period, and the current price makes it impossible to use."
  • "They gave us aggressive discounts when they were brought in for the first time, but they have also kept them for the year-on-year renewals, which has been absolutely fine."
