Customization supports complex needs, though speed challenges persist
We don't use the reporting tools from Adobe Commerce as we have our own reporting infrastructure. Adobe Commerce can be complex in terms of ease of use, as it's such a large platform. From the development side, you can customize everything, but that does require substantial resources. When working on Adobe Commerce, I would want Adobe Commerce specialist developers. Although it's all built in PHP, and there are many PHP developers, I would want Adobe Commerce specialist developers working on it because they have knowledge about what to customize and more importantly, what's best not to touch. There are always site speed issues with Adobe Commerce. It seems to be an ongoing issue with performance. When comparing it to Shopify, you don't tend to need to worry about that, but with Adobe Commerce, it remains an ongoing issue. Additionally, there are all the upgrades, which can be quite painful, including the regular patches, both on the open-source and licensed version, on-premises. The initial setup for migrating to Adobe Commerce from another e-commerce platform is not straightforward; it's a very big job. The pricing for Adobe Commerce varies dramatically. Quite often, you see their list prices and then you are able to negotiate very hefty discounts. My understanding is that they're moving away from heavily discounting. Although our license where I am at the moment is heavily discounted, I'm hearing that they're trying to move away from that practice.

Useful for B2B retail operations and order management but UI is bland and old
The UI might not be the fanciest, and since it's an older system, our customers are sometimes hesitant to invest in it. They're even considering moving to new e-commerce solutions, maybe even something custom-built in-house. It's quite basic and bland compared to today's modern web developments, which have enhanced user experiences. We're just providing support services to our customers, and they’ve been exploring a move to Oracle Commerce. However, there's some concern about Oracle Commerce's future, especially since support for version 11.3.2 is set to end in March 2025. We haven’t heard back from Oracle regarding any plans to extend support. We’re just keeping the lights on for now, but a transformation might be on the horizon. We have done some proof of concept with Oracle Commerce.

Offers seamless integrations and effective architecture for retail operations
Salesforce Commerce Cloud offers effective architecture, ease of integration with third-party systems, and environments to test web store functionalities. Users can manage the site independently with the administration panel and benefit from features like easy marketing submissions, discount codes, and integration with Apple Pay and Bazaarvoice for reviews. The platform is also robust, with managed infrastructure by Salesforce.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It provides AI features, including a tool called Insight for AI-driven product recommendations."
"The product can be maintained effortlessly."
"Magento provides a strong backing, meaning it can handle the order processing, customer management, configuration, third party payment integration, and shipping matters. There is a standard, very well set up architecture already present in Magento that helps them set up their online shops with much precision. Clients can see their reports, their daily sales, their best selling products, and their best buying customers so that they can target them through mails or just follow up with them. These are the main default features which make Magento so attractive."
"On the plus side, when you build everything from scratch in Magento, you can do magic with it."
"Magento is very flexible, and it's one of the biggest e-commerce platforms."
"The open-source PHP code allows our developers to customize pretty much anything on the platform, including allowing us to add some of the most complex shipping and inventory features for clients who have very specific, industry-related business specifications."
"As compared to platforms such as ATG or Commerce Cloud, its interface is easy to use. Magento also provides seamless administration for business users. You can also integrate an OMS to an extent. You don't need to have a dedicated OMS. You can leverage the out-of-the-box features of Magento, which is very valuable for startups. Other platforms, such as Commerce Cloud, don't have an OMS, and you have to have your own OMS solution."
"The platform allows us to easily integrate with service vendors, such as delivery services and payment systems."
"The features that help us to change the product and pricing are good. They give us enough flexibility to manage this application."
"The most valuable features are all the promotion capabilities and the tiered-pricing capabilities."
"The tool is useful for B2B retail operations. The e-commerce platform is helpful for our customers when searching for products they want to buy. They can look up items using part numbers or product descriptions, which helps them find exactly what they want. We rely on the search functionality a lot."
"The merchandising part is where the business user adds and configures permissions, which is quite important for us."
"The tool's most valuable features are its integration with various scanners, OCR capability, and ability to populate the system with a lot of information. We use the workload automation feature occasionally."
"The product is really good. It is a robust tool that can scale up in any business, including some multi-million businesses."
"The conversion of opportunities and leads to accounts is one of the most valuable features."
"The implementation team can customise the implementation to customer needs."
"The filters are very useful, and easy to customize. it's very easy to operate."
"There is a good community of developers for the platform."
"Ability to quickly add content and manage products along with associated web content easily."
"Salesforce offers the best features and functionality, which are developed and refined over many years to provide a highly customized e-commerce experience."
"It is a very flexible solution."
"I have found the list creation and dashboard customization features valuable."

Cons

"More technical knowledge is required to keep a Magento website running smoothly compared to many other platforms like OpenCart."
"There are always speed issues with Adobe Commerce. It seems to be an ongoing issue with performance."
"Magento 2 is only three to four years old, so it is an evolving technology. In certain areas on the front there were some glitches. For example, you can't do certain kinds of filters on data and you have certain speed issues on category pages due to the way it was written within Magento. Those were a few minor tweaks where we, as a community, found that to be a necessary scope of improvement. But I think they are working on it and hopefully they can solve these issues earlier than later."
"I'm not a technical person, but we had some kind of late response in page loading, let's say page load speed."
"The price of Adobe Commerce is very high, actually. If it were possible to have a free version or a limited version, that would be good for users."
"I am still playing around and trying to catch up with the latest version to understand all the features, but I do feel that its CMS can be much more streamlined. They provide a what-you-see-is-what-you-get editor, which many customers prefer, but based on the implementations that I have done for more than seven years, I have seen that many times, it is run by the marketing team, and they don't find it very comfortable to use. They feel uncomfortable managing and changing the content. As a business user, you need to have at least basic knowledge of HTML, which you cannot expect from all marketing teams. Some companies or organizations have that competency, but many organizations, especially in the Middle East, have a very small team, so it becomes quite difficult for them. This is a common challenge that I have seen across the platforms. Magento is better and easier than Oracle Commerce Cloud, but Shopify is much easier than Magento. A layman or my 10-year-old kid can go ahead and set up a store in Shopify in probably 45 minutes, which is not the case with Magento. Elasticsearch has really been a pain. It takes a toll on the performance. Starting with version 2.4, Magento requires Elasticsearch, which has been causing a lot of serious performance issues. We had a client in the US who was running a promo, and they lost a subsequent number of orders over one and a half hours. They were on the enterprise platform, not open-source. The team had to open a ticket with Magento. Its performance needs to be upgraded, or some kind of guidelines have to be provided for the setup. It looks like even Magento has no clue. When you go through the answers given in the online community, it seems that in spite of having the hardware configurations that they suggest, it is not performing at the optimal level. It should also have a better way to measure performance. Performance measuring has to be much easier. Many times, we see CPU utilization going up and down. We see spikes without any reason. Therefore, we need a better performance management system."
"The product needs to improve its security. Also, they need to improve B2B features."
"The hardware requirements of the tool should be made better, as it is a solution that is very heavy on the servers, and it makes it expensive to host many servers."
"The UI might not be the fanciest, and since it's an older system, our customers are sometimes hesitant to invest in it. They're even considering moving to new e-commerce solutions, maybe even something custom-built in-house."
"There should be some sort of native integration. All the integrations that we build are completely customized. There should also be a mechanism for user surveys and product reviews. As of now, I don't see any feature related to these. It must have a provision for doing customer surveys and allowing customers to give product feedback. If I have a customer who purchased something on the website, there has to be a mechanism for a company to capture the feedback. This feature is currently not there. Similarly, if a customer wants to do a review of the product, there is no native feature for that."
"Oracle has a cloud solution, but some on-prem features are not available in the cloud version."
"The only issue with the tool is that it is not cloud-based."
"So far, with Oracle ATG, I haven't seen any good cloud-based solutions."
"One drawback is that the tool could be more agile in adding new features. Since the product is very big, new features aren't added continuously. However, it already meets most of our requirements for day-to-day use."
"Salesforce Commerce Cloud should integrate more seamlessly with various systems, providing full order tracking from entry to delivery."
"The solution should have more and faster reporting, as well as better performance."
"It is similar to ATG, but some features can be exchanged between the 2."
"Salesforce Commerce Cloud could improve overall customization. Having a template deployment would be a useful feature."
"In terms of application performance, it could be a bit quicker."
"Four years ago, we linked Salesforce Commerce Cloud with Outlook, and this was a nightmare because a contact in 20 opportunities is a common scenario."
"This solution could be improved by providing additional artificial intelligence capabilities that are available out-of-the-box. It would be useful to have automatic forecasts using AI."
"The solution is expensive."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"This solution is cheaper than some of its competitors. However, the price depends on which country you are in. In some countries, such as Greece or some Southeastern European countries, the price for the client can be expensive."
"We transitioned from the platform's commercial license to the open-source version, which helped optimize costs without affecting our sales."
"The cost of implementation is cheap compared to other solutions."
"Many implementations were open-source. We also had a couple of enterprise-level implementations, but I didn't have visibility on the licensing cost."
"The product offers an open-source version, which is free. There are licensing options for Adobe Commerce's cloud version."
"The price of the solution increased after Adobe acquired Magento. At this point, we know the price of Magento and SAP, and while they may have lower entry tickets, they are ultimately comparable."
"Oracle ATG is an expensive solution."
"The tool's licensing is costly. Finding the right talent to manage it is also a challenge."
"The product's pricing is moderate. We use a license module."
"The licensing of Salesforce Commerce Cloud is something that will depend on the customer's usability. For us as a company, we are in a position where we will be paying the premium for licensing. If we go to the customer who is seeking a B2C solution quickly, we will definitely look at the pricing when it comes to the user base and receive good discounts. Discount is something that depends on the volume and that is where we need to work on. It is a little sensitive market when it comes to licensing procurement. There are some good competitors."
"I don't know how much the solution costs per user, but I know it's our biggest cost in the company."
"Salesforce is not a cheap solution."
"The licensing works on a per-user basis."
"There are no significant upfront license costs."
"The product is expensive."
"The pricing is fairly reasonable."
"I think price-wise, it's a little bit expensive. It can be made cheaper for smaller businesses. I understand that for larger businesses, it can be a payable amount. But for medium to smaller, it is kind of costly, and it might be difficult for them to pay."

WCS vs Hybris vs ATG - Feature Smackdown
They say "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder", so if you are a purist in one of these technologies you would probably never agree to my comparison matrix, However these are my personal opinion, From my experience standpoint I have longest exposure to WCS Commerce Suite and the least with ATG…
