Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility

Daily recovery tests have validated restore readiness and ensured consistent data protection
The best features of Unitrends include the daily reporting functionality. When backups fail, it is obvious in the logs what caused the issue. Most times it is a credential problem, which is relatively easy to resolve. Though I have experienced a few more challenging issues, nothing has affected critical backup restore functionality. Every time I have needed to restore something, it has worked successfully. The support team is readily available when I need assistance, and they help walk me through issues, solving them within a reasonable timeframe. The automated backup scheduling feature has helped our organization in managing backup timelines and consistency by handling all the work automatically. We set the schedule, breaking things into smaller chunks since our main common area for files is large. I have staggered the backups so some areas receive more attention than others, particularly for less active data. Adding, removing, excluding, and inputting elements is straightforward. The system makes it simple to schedule portions and generate reports on their functionality. The impact of Unitrends' instant recovery features on strengthening data security measures is significant. I generally use instant recovery when restoring specific files or instances where we need data that has changed. The process involves loading the backup, selecting the desired version, waiting for it to unpack, and retrieving the file. Every restore attempt has been successful. I run instant recovery daily in test mode on two virtual machines. I use it to test my domain controller and file server to ensure they communicate properly in the test environment. This ensures that in case of failure, I can activate the recovery and restore server functionality.

Pros

"Our complete Data Centre HP Data Protector deployment was AU$46,000."
"I like that it supports HPE UNIX servers since many backup solutions do not - this is the main reason why we chose this solution."
"For our data there is no price."
"The best thing I find with Data Protector as opposed to other products was the inter-compatibility with all different OSs; it's very OS agnostic and just seems to work, and the GUI interface is very intuitive and very easy to use."
"OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers."
"I have used Micro Focus Data Protector for the file backup facilities. My primary use of the software is to backup file data."
"The most valuable feature for me is the number of agents available to back up our data."
"Regarding scalability, it's unlimited with Data Protector. You can link multiple installations and let them work together. They can share backup devices. You have many possibilities with Data Protector. It's very proficient."
"It is an easy system to use. The support, if needed, is always willing to help."
"The ability to back up both physical and virtual appliances under one roof."
"If you are a large organization or corporation, with multiple sites, you can replicate the data from one Unitrends device to another Unitrends appliance, then this is definitely a solution for you."
"The nice thing with this appliance is you do not have to worry about server licencing, and it's separate from the SAN."
"Unitrends allows us to easily add new assets to our existing backup strategy with no headaches."
"VM backup is much faster and more reliable, as I can test my backups with Data Copy Access jobs."

Cons

"Actually, we're moving away from Data Protector due to lack of support on newer operating systems and latest products."
"Unfortunately, Data Protector is not exactly the tool for that task."
"Micro Focus Data Protector must improve its overall evolution record. They need to focus on hardware based instant recovery, client recovery, and cloud ability. Now there is no cloud ability."
"Integration with the market applications must be improved, such as MS Exchange, MS Active Directory, SAP and Oracle. Other backup tools are more efficient with the integrated backups."
"I really wouldn't recommend others to use this solution - especially when it comes to the technical support."
"The reporting capabilities of HPE Data Protector are very limited and is the main area I feel that HPE Data Protector needs to improve on."
"The scalability could be a bit better, actually, because that connects to the stability question."
"I am not happy with the support structure within HPE when things go wrong."
"Technical support has not been very helpful when there are complex issues. It is sometimes difficult to find someone who can answer questions the right way."
"Every few years, an update may not be applied right and we may have to manually reload the software."
"There are some questions as to how safely they are storing backup data."
"Unitrends can be challenging to scale."
"Technical support is quite inadequate. Techs don't seem to be well-versed in troubleshooting issues that arise and tickets stay opened for weeks for resolution."
"Renewal issues: It should have the ability to do year-by-year for multiple years."
"Follow up for the DRaaS service setup. I'm still waiting to schedule a DRaaS test after upgrading several months ago."
"The solution’s support and onboarding process needs to be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The licensing structure provides cost savings to business."
"It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
"They have two types of licensing, one is for storage capacity and the other is client licensing. The capacity licensing here is a bit expensive."
"The licensing cost is too high."
"The license for the solution is very expensive compared to the other products in the market."
"The pricing is acceptable for enterprise level companies, but it's not acceptable for small- and medium-sized businesses. Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution, and it should cover small- and medium-sized businesses with acceptable prices."
"Data Protector's pricing is very competitive and we have no issues in this regard. I would give it an eight out of ten in terms of pricing."
"Pricing for Micro Focus Data Protector is reasonable."
"Initial pricing is competitive. Renewal pricing is steep, so make sure to project costs for the lifetime of the appliance(s)."
"Talk with the sales guys. They can work with you on the best package."
"Pricing model constantly changes."
"You should be aware how much the monthly costs are to use, what the initial costs for hardware are, and what the options to expand are, if needed."
"We found that the cost of Unitrends was about the same as the Dell DR6300. We liked the fact that the Unitrends appliance was all-in-one."
"The cost of Unitrends definitely draws you in. The licensing is all included in the appliance, which is a great incentive."
"When you purchase initially, get into the program which gives replacement hardware for free when you renew your support agreement."
