Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

Daily recovery tests have validated restore readiness and ensured consistent data protection
The best features of Unitrends include the daily reporting functionality. When backups fail, it is obvious in the logs what caused the issue. Most times it is a credential problem, which is relatively easy to resolve. Though I have experienced a few more challenging issues, nothing has affected critical backup restore functionality. Every time I have needed to restore something, it has worked successfully. The support team is readily available when I need assistance, and they help walk me through issues, solving them within a reasonable timeframe. The automated backup scheduling feature has helped our organization in managing backup timelines and consistency by handling all the work automatically. We set the schedule, breaking things into smaller chunks since our main common area for files is large. I have staggered the backups so some areas receive more attention than others, particularly for less active data. Adding, removing, excluding, and inputting elements is straightforward. The system makes it simple to schedule portions and generate reports on their functionality. The impact of Unitrends' instant recovery features on strengthening data security measures is significant. I generally use instant recovery when restoring specific files or instances where we need data that has changed. The process involves loading the backup, selecting the desired version, waiting for it to unpack, and retrieving the file. Every restore attempt has been successful. I run instant recovery daily in test mode on two virtual machines. I use it to test my domain controller and file server to ensure they communicate properly in the test environment. This ensures that in case of failure, I can activate the recovery and restore server functionality.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The main purpose of this software suite (safely backup and restore main systems) is fully achieved."
"The most valuable feature is the ability to recover individual files."
"The tool's most valuable aspect is its ease of management. It was not complex. In terms of features, I can mention a couple of things. For example, if you need to restore a VM, you can do it with multiple streams in OpenText Data Protector, which is an advantage over Commvault, from what I've noticed, having worked with multiple tools. Another thing is the Oracle backups; configuring Oracle backups is much easier in OpenText Data Protector."
"It is very easy to use and the interaction with various systems is very handy."
"We can quickly restore files that have been deleted or are missing from the system."
"It works excellently only with Oracle."
"The initial setup was relatively easy."
"Many of my clients have been able to remove tape drives from remote sites."
"What I found most valuable in Unitrends is its simple user interface. It also works reliably."
"Unitrends really has cross-compatibility and a broad area of support for various operating system backups."
"With all these new features and (performance) improvements as well as the fusion between two great companies (Unitrends and PHD Virtual), and their products, UEB 7.5 is a feature rich product which I can easily promote to all my customers."
"Unitrends has helped us cut down the time that it takes to restore a server to its original configuration."
"The ability to back up both physical and virtual appliances under one roof."
"It has reduced recovery time, from recovering VMs to just simple file-level recovery, and it's all fast and easy."
"Being an appliance-based solution, we were able to migrate backup solutions without having to purchase a lot of hardware separately."
"I really like the reporting options you get for various email reports."

Cons

"The technical support was very slow."
"The major issue we are facing in this product is Sybase database integration."
"The downside of the flexibility on offer is if you over-configure it, it may fail to function as some configurations may not match."
"The interface has been the same for many years and needs to be updated"
"It works with virtual machines, but it's way too complex right now."
"I have SUSE XEN virtualization set up in my environment. HP Data Protector does not provide integration with it, and I would like to see it integrate with XEN in a future release."
"The new backup systems are using new mechanisms for the recovery phases; for example, VM, recovery and testing the backup before recovering it. These features are not available in Data Protector."
"Actually, we're moving away from Data Protector due to lack of support on newer operating systems and latest products."
"I would like to see more storage options for the free version."
"Scalability is where I'm running into more of an issue right now. To upgrade is pretty expensive; it's not like you can just buy a smaller appliance and put it with the one you already have, you need to buy a larger appliance and that can get fairly pricey."
"The ability to run just differentials without pulling the full on your archive."
"There are some questions as to how safely they are storing backup data."
"We had an issue about a year ago, but it actually ended up wiping our entire backup history, because one of the databases got corrupted, and we couldn't recover the backup data."
"I wouldn't recommend this product to potential customers because it's an appliance-based model, and you'll be locked in with that vendor."
"Unitrends can be challenging to scale."
"There's a lot that can be made better. For example, it could be more scalable."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is around $3,000 to $5,000. The charge additionally for support and to scale."
"They have two types of licensing, one is for storage capacity and the other is client licensing. The capacity licensing here is a bit expensive."
"Data Protector's pricing is very competitive and we have no issues in this regard. I would give it an eight out of ten in terms of pricing."
"It is more affordable compared to other vendors."
"The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
"Our licensing is on a capacity basis."
"The solution requires paying for a license."
"The pricing is acceptable for enterprise level companies, but it's not acceptable for small- and medium-sized businesses. Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution, and it should cover small- and medium-sized businesses with acceptable prices."
"You should be aware how much the monthly costs are to use, what the initial costs for hardware are, and what the options to expand are, if needed."
"Talk with the sales guys. They can work with you on the best package."
"Unitrends is an expensive solution."
"The cost of Unitrends definitely draws you in. The licensing is all included in the appliance, which is a great incentive."
"Pricing model constantly changes."
"Initial pricing is competitive. Renewal pricing is steep, so make sure to project costs for the lifetime of the appliance(s)."
"With respect to cost, my advice is to get what you need."
