A cloud solution for operational reporting but is expensive
Some basic feature that is available in other reporting tools is missing. Looker has the ability to show more than 5,000 rows for operational reporting. Some reporting tools allow users to scroll down to see more than 5,000 rows, but in Looker, you have to download the entire dataset. Looker should consider adding a scroll-down option to allow users to view large datasets on screen without downloading them. Looker has some options for granting users access as viewers. However, viewers cannot download the entire dataset. Only superusers can download the whole dataset on the Explore screen. This is a big limitation, as you cannot give any user viewer access. You can give access to superuser access, which is a cost to the company.

Solution empowers self-service reporting and delivers comprehensive performance insights
Empowering business users means they should be able to work independently without depending on the developer. One advantage of SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform is self-service capabilities, allowing users to do drag and drop to build their own reports and perform analyses without needing technical know-how.The platform has many drivers that I can use to connect to virtually all available databases, making it easy to integrate with Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and many others. With the cloud version, I can fetch data on-premises and to the cloud for analysis easily. It is so flexible that I can make choices for fetching data. For authentication in an SAP environment, I can choose to integrate with SAP logon for SSO or use AD authentication for convenience, along with the flexible integration options.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is easier and quicker to find things in the database."
"Technical support is the best ever."
"With respect to buy solutions, cost is relevant. However, the Looker solution would have outmatched the ongoing multi-million budget spending with respect to cost-efficiency."
"Looker allows you to generate the most optimal SQL queries in a DC through UI actions. We had signed a contract with Google Cloud to use BigQuery. That was the primary reason we adopted Looker. It works better with BigQuery than any other BI platform. We also like how this tool was developed. It was designed with an eye toward microservices architecture."
"We can centralize all our data models."
"Looker is an extremely valuable product that can really transform your company's ability to use data to answer challenging questions."
"I would rate the stability a ten out of ten. I didn't face any issues with stability."
"Looker offers incredible business visualization and analytical tools: graphs, charts, tables, and single numbers."
"It is solid and stable."
"SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform helps improve data governance and security measures because it is one application that integrates all departments of an organization."
"Tableau offers excellent visualization and fast data discovery with quick turnaround time."
"It is a very good product, stable, and has good technical capabilities."
"Semantic layer is their main heart of SAP Business Objects."
"Good, powerful functions in the table format report compared with Microsoft Power BI."
"We have used all the business objects tools, but this one satisfies all of the business requirements in an optimized way."
"The return on investment from this solution is high, with the highest ROI observed."

Cons

"Looker depends on the database components. For example, if you have a underperforming database, then you likely will have a poor performance experience."
"There is a lot of customization that we needed/need to build ourselves. Other BI tools have more out of the box."
"The main area of concern in Looker is probably related to blending the data from the different sources, including the data present internally in the company and on the cloud."
"It needs to be more user-friendly."
"The pricing model makes sense, but can be very expensive, potentially prohibitively so for smaller companies."
"Some of the visualizations are a bit limited on how much you can customize them."
"Features related to visualization should continue to be improved."
"Looker doesn't connect to Excel, which is a huge disappointment because a lot of data is presented in Excel."
"I am not so satisfied with the technical support because I am opening cases but it's taking too much time."
"The admin features for disk space management need work. It's very difficult to manage the disk space by the application; good admin features and not included to allow you to do that. I don't believe that is in the latest version of the product either."
"There are definitely some areas of improvement (i.e. interface, etc.), just as every product needs improvements to meet changing demands over time."
"Over the years, the product tends to rename and rebrand itself and change its direction. This is a deficit of the solution."
"The biggest area for improvement would be the dashboarding capabilities due to the recent change from Xcelsius to Dashboard Designer."
"SAP should work on performing the deployment and post-implementation support a bit easier."
"We feel that the tool is very complex in terms of implementing the dashboard; lots of coding and performance issues, and we require particular skillsets and resources as regular users cannot understand it."
"More thorough testing of Service Packs before release."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It's not cheap, but it's not expensive for big companies."
"The price of Looker usually depends on the solution's provider, but it is usually cheaper than the other products in the market. Looker is offered at different prices for different companies."
"I do not have to make any payments to use the solution."
"Looker is expensive and could be made better by reducing it."
"It is cheap."
"We are satisfied with the solution, but we are not satisfied with the licensing cost which SAP offers. They offer one lumpsum licensing which does everything. That is not the right strategy, because sometimes you don't have power users, they are only viewers, but we need to buy the full license for them. This is not something we want to continue with."
"We purchase licenses through Epic. So, we get an Epic price as opposed to the SAP price. If we were going to use other products like Webby that they offer or exclusively use BI Launch Pad, it would cost a lot because half of our employees would touch it in some fashion. So, we use Epic-Crystal integration to keep the licensing cost down. I believe the BI Launch Pad licensing is something like $800 for each, and the Crystal Report licensing is something like $500 for each, but that's not what we pay."
"It is not a subscription model, but you must purchase a perpetual license for this."
"Just work with SAP to make sure you have enough licenses but don't go overboard."
"It is not an expensive platform. The licensing is for a package of users starting at 10 users."
"SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform is an expensive application."
"It has an option of a Cloud Platform (SAP Analytics Cloud) which has a lower price than the on-premise platform, and you can buy individual licences per user."
"The price and the pricing model are fine. We find the solution does not give us a lot of additional value."

SAP Business Objects vs. Microsoft BI
A quick look at the whole idea on another weblogs gives you a sense that all of them just talked about very brief things like report refresh feature in BO or cube feature in MS Analysis Service. I choose MS BI and I want to share my reasons and opinions on why I choose it and give you another quick…
