Alerting precision has reduced incident response times and improved department-level network visibility
The auto-pause sensor during the maintenance window is good without any false alerts, and it prevents me from getting flooded with alerts during planned maintenance, helping department heads understand their own network usage better. It has reduced incident response time by giving clearer ownership of each alert, ensuring alerts go to the proper recipient. SNMP testers and auto-pause are among the best features of PRTG Network Monitor, which is particularly useful for different departments such as HR and finance, where alerts can be filtered accordingly. The alerting features and dashboard of PRTG Network Monitor are very helpful, especially in our industry. However, the dashboard can look cluttered on smaller screens, which is one negative aspect. PRTG Network Monitor has impacted us positively; we have stopped getting flooded with alerts during planned maintenance or unplanned outages. Compared to others, this gives specific alerts very quickly and helps department heads understand their own network usage better, thus reducing incident response time so that each alert has clear ownership.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"All in all, LiveAction LiveNX has become an indispensable tool for maintaining and improving our network's reliability and performance, ultimately supporting our organization's goal of providing timely and dependable delivery services."
"One of the valuable features is the ability to create CLI scripts on the fly to fix any issues. We were using it for QoS modeling to ensure that we were properly modeling QoS, and it basically said here is what you need to fix to get this QoS done, whether it is ACL or something else. It would either push or recommend. If you have the right credentials, you could also push. It is very good if you are a Cisco shop. It gives you reporting, latency, and bandwidth utilization for your applications, so you can do good capacity management planning. There are a lot of pieces that LiveNX can give you. It is a total NPM solution for SD-WAN."
"On a scale of 1-10, I rate LiveAction LiveNX a nine."
"Its analytical capability is really good."
"It is very good if you are a Cisco shop; it gives you reporting, latency, and bandwidth utilization for your applications, so you can do good capacity management planning."
"The alerting feature is very good because it allows you to set MOS alerts at various network junctures or data points."
"The intention and the idea of the filter is great, but it is far, far away from good and perfect."
"We don't have any complaints about the software. According to my team, it's a very good tool that's very intuitive."
"The feature whereby it shows when my hard drives are moving towards thresholds that would be considered outages, before they reach that point - that is valuable."
"It is pretty simple to use, which is always a good thing. It's been very reliable in updating us if any issues crop up."
"The up-to-date graphs and the history are very good."
"Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"The product is easy to use and the web interface is fantastic."
"The reporting module is easy to configure."
"Technical support has been very helpful so far."
"Ability to create a dashboard inside software monitoring."

Cons

"It is not as robust as other NPM solutions. For instance, there is a problem while labeling specific applications. It works well with well-known applications, but when you have to put in new applications that are not very known and set them up with names, ports, URLs, or some protocols, it is not as intuitive."
"The tool crashes sometimes when we try to pull reports simultaneously."
"My advice to others would be to run away from it. This is a slight exaggeration but this is more because the application is horrible, the stability is horrible, the performance is horrible and the support is horrible."
"Sometimes the solution does not register devices properly and that is a bug."
"This is a horrible solution and I think everything needs to be improved."
"The only downside to this software is the price."
"The only downside to this software is the price; it's a very pricey solution and very expensive, and it requires a good amount of resources in terms of server memory."
"They have some unique functionality but they need to create a more simplified UI."
"In the next release, PRTG Network Monitor should add a backup solution."
"The technical support response time is still prolonged, and the resolution can be better."
"I would like to see network mapping."
"The technical support needs some improvement. The response time is slow, we normally get a response the next business day for urgent issues which is long time."
"I posed this question to PRTG and they were unresponsive, so it seems like not enough customers are complaining about it or would be potentially using it."
"PRTG Network Monitor can improve Layer 2 and Layer 3 network maps and the GUI more user-friendly. Additionally, they should bundle the features so I can monitor everything on one particular device."
"Having a Unix implementation or Unix installation could be an improvement. Right now, it's based just on Windows, and that's a problem for some customers."
"There is not much not to love in this software but one item on my wishlist that has yet to be addressed in an intuitive way is the ability to use and manage templates."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It's very expensive."
"The solution is fairly expensive compared to other products."
"We use the free version."
"I rate the licensing for PRTG Network Monitor an eight out of ten."
"PRTG Network Monitor is not that expensive, so I like it cost-wise. There's no additional cost apart from the standard licensing fees. On a scale of one to five, with one being the cheapest and five being the most expensive, I would rate the cost of PRTG Network Monitor a two."
"Licenses are very expensive, so I would like to see cheaper licensing."
"The price is actually on the cheaper side. If you're going with the unlimited license code, it's very cheap compared to competitors unless you're going for something free, like Zabbix. But you get what you pay for, and it doesn't have the full suite of products or tools like SolarWinds or a ScienceLogic."
"We pay nothing for it. Its 100 sensors have allowed us to put a magnifying glass on some systems, providing an extra layer of detail. Therefore, our outgoing is nothing and our incoming is a lot of useful data that we can react to proactively."
"Right now, the smallest sensor pack that they have is just a bit out of range for me, as a business. This kills me, as I need the product. Therefore, there is always a balance between needing to buy it or continuing their free version."
"In my company now, we are using the free version."
"It's an annual license that is based on the number of endpoints that we're tracking and using."
