Enforces standardized setup procedures following Certified Validated Design (CVD) guidelines and offers greater flexibility and control over the system compared to traditional systems
The GUI setup follows the right setup, meaning we have to follow the CVDi.e. Certified Validated Design. Everything is clear, because you can build CI yourself, but without rules, it can be messy. With FlexPod, there are rules to follow, making it more standardized. This helps with troubleshooting and compatibility assessments, simplifying troubleshooting significantly. We also use FlexPod pre-validated architectures to validate the design. It is very, very important to us because we had a bad case in 2015 where separate items integrated poorly due to no version or firmware compatibility certification. Troubleshooting became a nightmare. So, standards are crucial for us, and everything entering production should be verified or at least documented for certification.

Centrally-managed and stable, but the initial setup could be made simpler and technical support can be improved
There is a different platform and there are different interfaces for different parts of the product. Although there are some centralized components, you still manage each component using its own set of tools. There is definitely room for improvement in this regard. I would like to have a catalogue like menu where you simply define your end computing needs and the rest would be taken care of internally. The initial setup could be unified to make it simpler.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution has decreased the unplanned downtime incidents in our organization by 25 to 30 percent."
"It is absolutely resilient. It has built-in redundancy and multipathing. If there is an issue with one part, it doesn't fail automatically."
"The most valuable feature is the flexibility because it scales to meet your needs."
"Based on the fact that our clients can use code to program the system, they are able to deploy solutions that are a lot more reliable, enabling them to focus more on their business rather than solving technology problems."
"Take a look at FlexPod and do a PoC; compare it to other products and you will see the huge savings."
"It's an all-in-one validated design; we don't have to worry about making sure that thing A supports thing B, as it's all top-down, integrated, and validated, which means for us, it's going to just work."
"The Validated Designs are very good because they act as a reference to see whether we have done things properly."
"The product is uniquely valuable because we were able to get everything up and running very quickly without having to consult with multiple teams across the IT infrastructure."
"Systems run solidly."
"VCE’s secret sauce is their release compatibility matrix which allows us to deploy updates without the need for significant testing."
"We used to have different departments, each with their own IT section, everybody was making their own IT investments and running different applications and tools in a multi-vendor environment, and now it is all coordinated and synchronized in one solution, reducing the risk of equipment and costs as well."
"UCS brings the entire datacenter system together, letting us offer non-disruptive, seamless upgrades and storage tiering for people with higher IO demands, and it gives us flexibility."
"Finding a fully bundled, deployed, and configured solution with a short delivery time and unique support is really attractive."
"The XtremIO All-Flash array delivers performance, reliability, and deduplication."
"The most valuable features are reliability and high availability."
"It's been very reliable, the support is very good, and it fit our needs very well, but our needs are constantly changing."

Cons

"With the next solution, if there is a virtual Flex part where we can deploy it to private clouds or in public clouds rather tying up the hardware, it would reduce costs and complexity. Then, we could do a lot more automation."
"Five years ago, it was very scalable. Now, the technology has changed so much in the last five years, it's not the most scalable solution out there."
"Stability is a big question mark. We suffered with lengthy downtime, so stability has not been fantastic."
"FlexPod is not cheap and the way things are going, you could probably get the same thing at half the price from another vendor."
"For tier 1 cases and system down type of issues, NetApp support is very good; for OFFTAP, not good."
"They need to make the platform a little cheaper in Brazil."
"We use technical support from time to time. Most of the time if we really need assistance we end up having to get above the tier one support. We're able to do a lot of the tier one troubleshooting on our own."
"I would like more support for different platforms, possibly different database platforms. I don't know if it supports Oracle today, but that would be a big improvement."
"I'm not so excited with Vblock solution."
"It's pretty good, but not great."
"I would like to see them improve their switching infrastructure and rely on Cisco configurations. They are a bit more complex and technical, but result in a slightly reduced cost in terms of switching on the network side of it."
"While most public clouds are deployed on Linux, there is current no certified Vblock working on KVM hypervisors."
"I think there needs to be more tools to monitor and manage the Vblock™ as a whole, instead of pieces."
"With respect to the technical support, there is room for improvement."
"Currently, there is some uncertainty about the future of the product line with regards to Dell's takeover of EMC."
"In the next release, I would like to see a smaller footprint in the data center and have improvements to disk performance."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It is cheaper than other products. For example, Dell EMC VxBlock is more expensive."
"It's expensive, but when you pay for enterprise support and enterprise products, you have to pay the big bucks."
"Sometimes you may end up spending a little more to get it in the first place, but you gain it back in terms of infrastructure upgrade costs and troubleshooting costs. The solution also lasts a surprisingly long time."
"As a whole, it is inexpensive, and it uses the least amount of parts."
"The cost is a little high."
"The scalability is very expensive."
"We purchased the solution through CDW. They are a partner and knowledgeable."
"Everything is purchased, so we do not do any leasing with this product."
"I would not say the pricing is not good value. It is still on the expensive side, near the top-end of cost compared to what's available now. Also, the licensing has to be improved. There has to be a clear definition of the licensing from the initial set-up so the customer knows what they are paying for, without being hit later on with extra licensing. The licensing definitions should be clearer and, perhaps, have one set of licenses rather than multiple licenses."
"Related to tech support: I believe it is too expensive."
"Vblock appears from the first while to be very expensive. There are more items you cannot see in the BOQ: customer service, support, delivery short time, and highly experienced VCE engineers."
"I think the pricing is on the higher end of the spectrum. There could be some adjustments that could be made there. Regarding licensing, watch compatibility with external products that you run on Vblock. It has got to be properly architected, otherwise, you will run into licensing issues."
"It is not cheap."
"Vblock is priced at a premium because people don't want the headache of managing and deploying different products."
"The paid support for Vblock is expensive."
"Strive for a consolidated ELA."
