Development from open sources is very valuable but a huge infrastructure is required
The solution's command line should be simpler so that routine commands can be used. The search configuration is a bit different than other OEMs or SIEM solutions like ArcSight or QRadar that are easy to search because they operate similarly. The logic is there and the solution supplies a pretty good explanation. Basically, DNIF spelled out is the opposite of FIND. You have to find commands whenever you want to search something. For example, a highway gets you to your destination but there is an alternate way people don't yet know about. Gartner or Forrester haven't yet studied it. We were a bit nervous when we were trying to get familiar with the solution. We wondered if we could realize ROI because the commands and ways of pulling data were different to us. We raised a case with the support team and their professionals provided the needed support. The command line is user friendly once you understand it. If you need immediate use, then you might want to get assistance from someone who is well-versed in methods for using key patterns to find things. Lengthier files for threat hunting or analysis are needed. The correlation happens, but exporting a large number of files to abstract them is not possible. For example, I want to present raw data to management so I should be able to customize a date range in my query and download the files.

Helps us detect cyber threats quickly and integrate multiple feeds effectively
Overall, the product is good, but when it comes to some infrastructure issues, we have to dig into more logs. There is no straightforward indication of an issue. Health check kind of dashboards are not available. More AI would help us, and more optimization, since security products run more queries. The AI module could suggest solutions, optimizing queries or workload balancing. If the product itself advises on running queries during peak times, it would be similar to what ChatGPT currently offers. We see quite a few issues on stability. Even last week, we faced something, and identifying bottlenecks is not easy. We need more SMEs, and there is no mechanism to tell us about indexer or search head issues. Self-monitoring dashboards could be beneficial. The technical support still requires more improvement. Often, primary support takes a lot of time and forwards most solutions to the engineering side. The primary support team has very limited knowledge to provide.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The response time on queries is super-fast."
"I like the MITRE table, a feature I saw for the first time in the same solution. There was one MITRE tactic table, which can be used to identify threats if you have all kinds of rules enabled or if you have rules for all the tactics in the MITRE table. There are 14 tables in MITRE, and those 14 tables consist of multiple columns, tactics, and techniques. It was one of the first SIEM tools I saw that had that particular MITRE table. On that basis, you can create new rules and identify existing ones. At any point, if an alert is triggered, it will try to match it to any of those MITRE tactics. I liked that creating a workbook on MITRE business was straightforward. I also like that you can search using SQL or DQL."
"The dashboard is helpful, and it creates visualizations to let staff review event data and identify patterns and anomalies."
"Great for scaling productivity for log monitoring purposes."
"The benefit of DNIF was that the solution was able to detect any anomalies and identify and prevent any possible security threats or attacks."
"Has a great search capability."
"DNIF is much faster, much more responsive, and far superior when compared to competitive tools."
"The User Behavior Analytics is a built-in threat-hunting feature. It detects and reports on any kind of malware or ransomware that enters the network."
"Overall, Splunk is among the top three SIEM tools due to its capabilities and agility in bridging business analytics with security needs."
"I haven't had the chance to properly sink my teeth into Enterprise Security but so far I like that they added the MITRE ATT&CK features."
"Searches logs from all devices and gives valuable information to the organisation, so it can drill down on all reports and security threats."
"Most of our return on investments have been through faster error resolutions."
"The ability to manage large amounts of generated data and to protect all devices from unauthorized use are the most valuable features."
"The compatibility with the add-ons helps us add more data in the same compatible format and use data models to elaborate and make it faster."
"Splunk can be scaled to any environment; the way it's designed, it's cloud-ready, and it has a lot of performance, in-built indexing, and performance tuning options, and Splunk is easily scalable."
"Capability to expand the functionality through custom code for data inputs, commands, visualization, alerts, and machine learning."

Cons

"The solution should be able to connect to endpoints, such as desktops and laptops... If this solution had a smart connector to these logs- Windows, Linux, or any other logs - without affecting the performance of the connector, that would be wonderful."
"DNIF HYPERCLOUD is not a stable product compared to other tools like IBM QRadar."
"The solution should be able to connect to endpoints, such as desktops and laptops."
"The vendor is fairly new and it's not as big as some of the international competitors. It's not a mature product. If you ask them to move data, it might take a lot of time."
"There are currently some issues with machine learning plug-ins."
"I used version 8 which was not at all stable. The services and processor keep going down, we had to manually keep them up increasing storage space because services are down, and logs not processed."
"We have some issues with machine learning plug-ins and I believe they're working on a solution for that."
"I feel that DNIF needs to invest more in marketing, considering that it operates at a very competitive speed."
"I would like to see future development in terms of ML (Machine Learning)."
"The documentation and training resources available for knowledge and training can be expanded. We need to learn more about Splunk Enterprise Security and new security attacks."
"The area of concern revolves around the fact that Splunk is an expensive product."
"They could offer pre-built search queries for everyday use cases like brute force attacks, DDoS attacks, and other security threats."
"Its performance can be better. Sometimes, it takes longer when we do queries."
"Splunk could enhance its offerings by incorporating modules for network detection and response and fraud management, along with improving its threat intelligence management capabilities."
"I would like to get visibility into the data pipelines on heavy forwarders and indexers to see exactly their source and the cause of saturation when it occurs. This would help us learn even more about our high use applications."
"A few years ago, I would have definitely recommended Splunk, but nowadays, better alternatives are available."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Price-wise, the product is quite economical. I rate the solution's price as three or four on a scale of one to ten, where one is considered to be a very economically priced tool."
"The pricing is based on the log size."
"The solution requires a huge infrastructure and that is costly."
"As a team, we prefer the old pricing model with a perpetual license. We are still evaluating the whole subscription-based model."
"ROI is estimated at saving my team roughly 10 to 12 man hours per week in troubleshooting for our company as well as what our profits had been from our services of installing, configuring, and supporting other clients with the product."
"Splunk Enterprise Security is not at all cost-friendly to be deployed in very small enterprises like start-ups."
"Splunk Enterprise Security's pricing is pretty competitive."
"Its price is fair. Like with anything else, if you go into the cloud, different providers cost more, and you are able to throttle back or throttle up. The cost is comparable with anything else."
"Be upfront about your needs and expectations. Splunk is great to work with."
"Splunk Enterprise Security is a bit expensive overall, but it provides good value."
"Splunk is a bit pricier, but the benefits and ROI are huge."
