Development from open sources is very valuable but a huge infrastructure is required
The solution's command line should be simpler so that routine commands can be used. The search configuration is a bit different than other OEMs or SIEM solutions like ArcSight or QRadar that are easy to search because they operate similarly. The logic is there and the solution supplies a pretty good explanation. Basically, DNIF spelled out is the opposite of FIND. You have to find commands whenever you want to search something. For example, a highway gets you to your destination but there is an alternate way people don't yet know about. Gartner or Forrester haven't yet studied it. We were a bit nervous when we were trying to get familiar with the solution. We wondered if we could realize ROI because the commands and ways of pulling data were different to us. We raised a case with the support team and their professionals provided the needed support. The command line is user friendly once you understand it. If you need immediate use, then you might want to get assistance from someone who is well-versed in methods for using key patterns to find things. Lengthier files for threat hunting or analysis are needed. The correlation happens, but exporting a large number of files to abstract them is not possible. For example, I want to present raw data to management so I should be able to customize a date range in my query and download the files.

Helps us detect cyber threats quickly and integrate multiple feeds effectively
Overall, the product is good, but when it comes to some infrastructure issues, we have to dig into more logs. There is no straightforward indication of an issue. Health check kind of dashboards are not available. More AI would help us, and more optimization, since security products run more queries. The AI module could suggest solutions, optimizing queries or workload balancing. If the product itself advises on running queries during peak times, it would be similar to what ChatGPT currently offers. We see quite a few issues on stability. Even last week, we faced something, and identifying bottlenecks is not easy. We need more SMEs, and there is no mechanism to tell us about indexer or search head issues. Self-monitoring dashboards could be beneficial. The technical support still requires more improvement. Often, primary support takes a lot of time and forwards most solutions to the engineering side. The primary support team has very limited knowledge to provide.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The beauty of the solution is that you can develop infrastructure for a data lake using open sources that are separate from the licenses."
"Has a great search capability."
"I like the MITRE table, a feature I saw for the first time in the same solution. There was one MITRE tactic table, which can be used to identify threats if you have all kinds of rules enabled or if you have rules for all the tactics in the MITRE table. There are 14 tables in MITRE, and those 14 tables consist of multiple columns, tactics, and techniques. It was one of the first SIEM tools I saw that had that particular MITRE table. On that basis, you can create new rules and identify existing ones. At any point, if an alert is triggered, it will try to match it to any of those MITRE tactics. I liked that creating a workbook on MITRE business was straightforward. I also like that you can search using SQL or DQL."
"Great for scaling productivity for log monitoring purposes."
"DNIF is much faster, much more responsive, and far superior when compared to competitive tools."
"The solution is quite stable and offers good performance, it also works on a virtual machine and we haven't found any issues with it so far, it's been reliable."
"The response time on queries is super-fast."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is the number of EPS it can handle."
"Splunk has reduced application downtime by helping identify the point of failure."
"Deployment server for deploying changes in one go."
"Alerts when a server is malfunctioning, monitors external attacks, and takes action to stop spreading viruses."
"What I like the most about Splunk Enterprise Security is the flexibility and customization it offers, as you can create dashboards, write custom SPL queries, and design detections exactly as per your environment while leveraging strong correlation capabilities and visualizing everything in a single place, which makes analysis easier and far better than other solutions."
"The best features I've experienced over the past six years with Splunk Enterprise Security are the ability to create use cases and the flexibility to customize searches and use cases based on our specific requirements."
"The data representation options in the dashboards are excellent."
"The ability to view all of these different logs, then drilling down into specific times or into specific data sources, has proved to be the greatest aspect in decreasing our troubleshooting overhead time."
"Splunk has a very knowledgeable support staff and the Splunk support website is outstanding."

Cons

"The solution's command line should be simpler so that routine commands can be used."
"The EBA could be improved."
"The vendor is fairly new and it's not as big as some of the international competitors. It's not a mature product. If you ask them to move data, it might take a lot of time."
"We have some issues with machine learning plug-ins and I believe they're working on a solution for that."
"The solution should be able to connect to endpoints, such as desktops and laptops."
"Dependency on the DNIF support team was frustrating."
"I used version 8 which was not at all stable. The services and processor keep going down, we had to manually keep them up increasing storage space because services are down, and logs not processed."
"DNIF HYPERCLOUD is not a stable product compared to other tools like IBM QRadar."
"Most importantly, Splunk can be outrageously expensive. That is the problem with both Splunk and Sentinel. Their pricing literally explodes based on the amount of data you feed in."
"Visualizations can improve. There are some performance and stability issues with the visualization layer."
"Splunk should be able to integrate with other product using the free version."
"The technical support here in South Africa hasn't been great, but I understand why as we make up less than 3% of Splunk's total revenue in the world."
"The solution could be more user friendly and it's difficult to know at this stage whether our requirements will be met by the solution."
"There's been a big push for SBC compute over the ingestion model, which will hamper us."
"There is a definite learning curve to starting out."
"In my opinion, it is too expensive for our projects."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution requires a huge infrastructure and that is costly."
"Price-wise, the product is quite economical. I rate the solution's price as three or four on a scale of one to ten, where one is considered to be a very economically priced tool."
"The pricing is based on the log size."
"Our customers often complain that the price of Splunk is too high."
"As a team, we prefer the old pricing model with a perpetual license. We are still evaluating the whole subscription-based model."
"ROI is estimated at saving my team roughly 10 to 12 man hours per week in troubleshooting for our company as well as what our profits had been from our services of installing, configuring, and supporting other clients with the product."
"Unlike other security tools, Splunk provides a fixed amount of gigabytes per day, and we are required to pay for any additional usage beyond that limit, in addition to our monthly cost."
"The price of Splunk Enterprise Security is reasonable, falling somewhere in the middle range."
"We have seen ROI and improvements as we have continued to use the product, but they are more reactive."
"Splunk Enterprise Security is expensive."
"Pricing and licensing is quite expensive. But for the value the product provides, it seems at par in the market."
