Has enabled us to manage compute resources efficiently while supporting multiple languages
AWS Lambda needs to improve cold start time. Some AWS Lambda functions require a cold start, and if you need AWS Lambda to provide quick responses, you need some of the AWS Lambdas to be always on, which is risky. We need AWS Lambda's cold start time to be reduced so that we can use it much faster than now. We need a better way to handle the cold start. We should be able to start AWS Lambda much before in a predictable way instead of just calling and then having it start.

Collaborative research workflows have become fully reproducible and streamline peer reviews
Code Ocean has resulted in an overall improvement in collaboration reliability in my organization, helping us improve reproducibility and audit requirements, which are essential for some of our research-heavy or regulated workflows or tasks, and has also shortened review cycles and increased confidence in the shared results. Our review cycles have been reduced by up to 20%, and while some improvements cannot be measured in metrics, the overall reproducibility and audit requirements have also been improved, allowing us to spend less time debugging environment issues and more time focusing on analysis and results. Overall, there is improvement in our return on investment. We don't have to go through all the long review cycles, and most of our extra efforts involved in managing access and improving environment consistency have been reduced, which has removed excess efforts that we needed to put in and allowed us to spend less time debugging environment issues.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We use AWS Lambda because it provides a solution for our needs without requiring us to manage our infrastructure. With the tool, we only pay for the resources we use. Additionally, it is straightforward to implement and integrates with other services like API Gateway."
"The initial setup of AWS Lambda is very straightforward and quick."
"The most valuable feature of AWS Lambda, from a conceptual point, is its functions. For example, it's mathematical templates into which you can write, and create your solution. You write small pieces of a solution under given parameters."
"The valuable feature of AWS Lambda is the ease of coding. It is easier to code using the solution."
"It's also suitable for companies of any size. For example, we're a large enterprise, and we've used Lambda without any problems in the last 10 months."
"I like that it's easy to use and maintain. Lambda is good and supports different platforms, so you don't need to worry about language or maintenance."
"The most valuable features are event-based triggers. They're really good for a reactive style when you want things to happen as soon as something else happens."
"I think the most valuable feature is the agility of the solution."
"Code Ocean is an excellent platform for collaborative and reproducible computing, particularly if your work involves sharing code, data, and results in a reliable and auditable way."

Cons

"I would like the layers to have a bigger volume. I would like to be able to add more. I don't want to be limited by the layer."
"I have seen some drawbacks with certain integrations."
"AWS Lambda has some size limitations in the code line, you can't do a couple of functions to do the job."
"Its performance can be improved. There should also be more dynamic security permissions."
"I would like to see improvements in AWS Lambda's stability and setup processes, as there were some complexities encountered initially."
"Lambda could be improved in the sense that some of the things done with Lambda function take some time. So the performance could be better and faster."
"We need to invest time in learning the tool's language variant. We have encountered instances of downtime as well."
"We need to better understand Lambda for different scenarios. We need some joint effort between Amazon and the users to have the users identify how they can really leverage Lambda. It's not about Lambda itself; it's about the practice, the guidance. There needs to be very good documentation. From the user perspective, what exists now is not always enough."
"There is not much to dislike about Code Ocean, but I think the compute resources can sometimes be limited for very large or long-running workloads, and more flexible options or scaling compute may be beneficial."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"AWS Lambda is not expensive for micro testing but is expensive if used for long deployment or long services."
"The pricing varies based on the specific solution you're implementing, and in comparison to the value it provides, the overall cost is reasonable."
"The fees are volume-based."
"The price of the solution is reasonable and it is a pay-per-use model. It is very good for cost optimization."
"You're not paying for a server if you're not using it, which is another reason I like it. So, you're not paying if you're not using it. It scales, and you're charged based on usage. It all depends on the use case. Some can be extremely inexpensive if you have very low volume transaction rates. That way, you don't have to fire up and absorb the cost of the servers just sitting there waiting for a transaction to come through. You're only paying when you use it. So, depending upon the use model, Lambda could be highly efficient relative to an EC2 solution. You don't have to have things reallocated."
"The price of the solution is reasonable."
"AWS Lambda cost is pretty decent."
"AWS is slightly more expensive than Azure."
