Has provided a structured way to align business capabilities with IT while showing potential for support improvements
What it does is it creates a register in the documentation of all your applications and technologies. When you align or map it to your business capabilities, this is how you identify duplication of technologies in your business and how you can potentially rationalize and standardize on them. In conjunction with my business policies, LeanIX is quite effective because using it as a tool to determine what is an endorsed technology can prevent other technologies from being used. I would call it effective in preventing technology sprawl in my environment if it is used alongside my business policies. It does assist in aligning IT with business goals.

Efficient documentation generation through organized model structure with a good price-performance ratio
Whenever I begin a new project with Sparx, I have to spend time training people on how to use it since it is not straightforward. Although it's a powerful product with plenty of features, it's not easy for even experienced users to find their way without guidance. This is not the most user-friendly solution.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I would recommend it very strongly."
"If you want a data model of flexibility and catalog scalability I would recommend it from that perspective."
"The ease of modeling and the ease of showing interconnectivity and relationships is the most valuable. It is fairly simple and out of the box. It is customizable in many ways. It is a pretty good tool."
"You can design using a diagram tool installed on your desktop, a key difference from other vendors."
"It is a very stable solution...The initial setup of Avolution ABACUS is very easy."
"It's more than just an enterprise architecture tool as it has a lot of nice features, e.g. messaging, simulation, etc."
"It is a very powerful tool that does what an enterprise architect needs it to do and it supports the business in knowing more about the business so that they can do better."
"The most valuable feature is that it has a customizable meta-model, which is key."
"The ability to import data and generate reports from it. That's where its power lies."
"The most valuable features include the reporting capabilities and the LeanIX Academy's educational resources."
"I like the tool’s integration and maps."
"Ease of use is the most valuable feature. From an enterprise architecture perspective, it's not too cumbersome with too many functionalities, yet it has a lot of attributes for the content it covers."
"I do see some return on investment, some ROI, time saving, money saving; it's more than 30%, so ultimately, the work that I do in using LeanIX will pay for itself."
"The solution has a very useful assessment tool that automatically populates from input data to produce a detailed analysis of customer's environments."
"LeanIX is quite mature, enabling me to load applications, IT components, and map them to business capabilities to identify gaps and manage risk."
"The usability is very high. It almost looks like a Facebook for Enterprise architecture, it's pretty nice. It's HTML5 based. The repository is very easy. It has 10 different ways of sorting the objects you have in your architecture repository. Maintaining new data or to add data to your repository is very easy."
"Sparx technical support is good."
"Solution architecture and design, however the database management area really was not usable."
"The features I find most valuable is the ability to create a document and then put it into a OneCare artifact."
"For what Sparx EA can offer, it’s the best tool that we had."
"We absolutely feel that Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect provides a good ROI."
"Large diagrams for hardware infrastructure, HA environments, Integrated Solution view, etc all help different teams to understand the scope of projects."
"It is an excellent way for a company to start or an organization to start using an enterprise architecture discipline."
"We have implemented standardized EA models aided by templates, increased productivity due to ease of use, and provided a uniform tool from requirements analysis to technical design specifications used across teams."

Cons

"This solution needs to improve resource usage because it has a heavy browser. It is easy to use, but it takes time to load and to run other programs."
"It doesn't have the simulation capability, which would be helpful in doing some business process analysis and improvements."
"The usability of the tool is an area with shortcomings that need improvement."
"Their local presence in the Middle East could be scaled more, particularly in customer service. It would be good if they'd also have mobile dashboards for executive management out of the box."
"It needs more flexible analysis parameters and more capability as a BPM tool and doing BPM simulation, compared with Bonita BPM or Bizagi."
"The reporting could be easier to configure."
"I use reference models, which are taxonomies, in my EA work. It is a reference model/taxonomy of things with capabilities, sub capabilities, and sub-sub capabilities, so you're working it down. I haven't yet found a simple way to implement that in Abacus. It could be that it is there, but I don't know how to do it."
"Based on my experience, this is not a product that I recommend at the moment."
"The solution needs to incorporate an AI/ML data intelligence tool that gets smarter with industry-wise enterprise engagements and provides suggestive data input when optimum data sources are not available for a new engagement."
"They should improve the out of the box connectors that they provide. They should see if clients are really ready to adapt them."
"The pricing is a bit painful in the sense that it depends on the number of elements you fit in the system."
"They could include a combination of LeanIX and some modeling extensions."
"From its functionality, it is extendable at a high level, but to get your full-blown majority in Enterprise Architecture is not so easy."
"Not a ten because you always have that gap between complexity and easy to use. And the more complex the tool becomes, the more difficult it is to get the usability."
"The challenge with support was probably the response time."
"What could be improved in LeanIX is the reporting aspect, in particular the variety of reports."
"If you just want to create some diagrams with shapes and arrows, then use Visio."
"In a future release, they should improve portfolio planning."
"Enterprise Architect is not very good for mockups."
"Sparx is built by software tech-guys for software tech-guys. It's not an everyday architect or other office-worker mostly loved tool."
"It is very difficult to implement it in our project. It is a good product, but it is difficult to implement in a non-software company."
"I think the UI could be improved and made a little bit more presentable."
"The tutorials are a little thin for doing this, and I could find no examples that were provided for ideas."
"The solution needs to offer better support for the mobile-based system. Right now, it's not working."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is quite good compared to the competition and it is part of the reason we chose the product."
"This solution is expensive for some people's budgets and they need to offer a Lite version at a cheaper price"
"To get a fairly extensive license for Enterprise Architects from Spark is approximately US $400.00, maybe less, but with Avolution Abacus it was approximately US $2000.00 per year, and that includes maintenance with the Abacus tool."
"The cost of Avolution ABACUS is reasonable, given the features they offer in comparison to other tools."
"There is a subscription for this solution. We are on an annual subscription because you sometimes receive special offers the longer you subscribe."
"I'm paying on a yearly basis. I don't know whether it's a highly expensive tool or not. I'm getting a single version of it, and I don't have the enterprise part on it because I don't need the server component, and I don't need a web browser component. My estimate would be that it's a very reasonably priced tool given that you don't need to have licenses with everyone in order to get the information and the decision support capabilities out of the tool. You use the enterprise edition on top of the studio, which is the heart of the tool. I am not aware of any additional costs."
"It is expensive."
"It is competitive. It is not chump change. I am just using the studio version. I am not using the full enterprise version, which would probably cost me three times more for single-use, but it gives a lot more capability and analysis. It is server-based as well, and it is reasonably priced compared to a lot of the other tools. There are other tools that have other sorts of capabilities, but in order to use them, you'd really have to have like 50 users for the price to become justifiable."
"The tool needs to include more flexible licensing options. We do not use the tool all the time. So pricing should be considered only when we use the tool."
"The solution's pricing is based on a licensing model that is competitive and in line with other products."
"As the tool is cloud-based, its cost is more affordable."
"LeanIX uses application-based account licensing, where the cost is multiplied by the number of applications in the software implementation."
"It cost me $91,000 a year for 300 applications. For any enterprise, 300 applications are minimal, as many have well over 1,000 applications."
"I would rate the pricing a one out of ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive."
"There is a sweet spot of where they need to be on pricing right now. They could go up a little bit in pricing, but it has to do with the cost savings, and it has to do with the practitioners using it. I use it where I get cost savings and I can justify it, but they probably have the ability to flex a 10% up channel on their sales on that. So, they could increase their settle price, not their offering price, when they sell. They can probably hold that up a little bit higher than it is because there are cost savings that we can drive from it."
"The pricing is very good. We definitely get good value for the money."
"The licence has a costly upfront fee which gets you access. You have to pay an annual maintenance fee, which is less."
"It’s the best deal in town, by far."
"I rate the solution's pricing a five out of ten."
"Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect is priced well. The price we pay is approximately $20 per month. Other solutions I have found to be much more expensive."
"They have the price on their site for the enterprise version, and we do receive a small discount."
"I think our license costs roughly $1,000 a year, but I could be wrong."
"We paid 1200 euros as a once-off cost. All add ons and integrations come at an additional cost."
"The Corporate Edition, or one of the bundles, is the way to go."
