Development from open sources is very valuable but a huge infrastructure is required
The solution's command line should be simpler so that routine commands can be used. The search configuration is a bit different than other OEMs or SIEM solutions like ArcSight or QRadar that are easy to search because they operate similarly. The logic is there and the solution supplies a pretty good explanation. Basically, DNIF spelled out is the opposite of FIND. You have to find commands whenever you want to search something. For example, a highway gets you to your destination but there is an alternate way people don't yet know about. Gartner or Forrester haven't yet studied it. We were a bit nervous when we were trying to get familiar with the solution. We wondered if we could realize ROI because the commands and ways of pulling data were different to us. We raised a case with the support team and their professionals provided the needed support. The command line is user friendly once you understand it. If you need immediate use, then you might want to get assistance from someone who is well-versed in methods for using key patterns to find things. Lengthier files for threat hunting or analysis are needed. The correlation happens, but exporting a large number of files to abstract them is not possible. For example, I want to present raw data to management so I should be able to customize a date range in my query and download the files.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The User Behavior Analytics is a built-in threat-hunting feature. It detects and reports on any kind of malware or ransomware that enters the network."
"The benefit of DNIF was that the solution was able to detect any anomalies and identify and prevent any possible security threats or attacks."
"Great for scaling productivity for log monitoring purposes."
"The solution is quite stable and offers good performance, it also works on a virtual machine and we haven't found any issues with it so far, it's been reliable."
"Has a great search capability."
"DNIF is much faster, much more responsive, and far superior when compared to competitive tools."
"It was one of the first SIEM tools I saw that had that particular MITRE table."
"If you're an enterprise company and want to scale your productivity for log monitoring purposes, I found DNIF a better option than Splunk which has more complex software."
"Being able to identify security issues as they occur at near real time and then respond to them as soon as they occur is priceless."
"We had used previous products and found AlienVault centralized the logging for our security."
"The main menu: You can see everything there, what is happening on the servers, and in the logs, you can view more details of each event."
"Easy to use, scalable, stable, and very intuitive platform that provides protection against security threats."
"Customer service is excellent! Always very responsive."
"We used, tested, and tried several solutions prior to this solution; this solution answered too many questions under one reasonable cost, as opposed to piecemealing everything together for more money."
"The most valuable feature is threat intelligence."
"SIEM log collection is great, and all of the rules that support updates with maintenance."

Cons

"The solution's command line should be simpler so that routine commands can be used."
"Dependency on the DNIF support team was frustrating."
"DNIF HYPERCLOUD is not a stable product compared to other tools like IBM QRadar."
"I used version 8 which was not at all stable. The services and processor keep going down, we had to manually keep them up increasing storage space because services are down, and logs not processed."
"The vendor is fairly new and it's not as big as some of the international competitors. It's not a mature product. If you ask them to move data, it might take a lot of time."
"We have some issues with machine learning plug-ins and I believe they're working on a solution for that."
"There are currently some issues with machine learning plug-ins."
"The EBA could be improved."
"The way it identifies systems can use some improvement. It has a hard time differentiating between versions of Windows."
"The UI and overall processes need a little bit more love. This shows in the error banners that come up when you select certain things. There isn't a day that goes by that the UI doesn't error out and I can't view events for an alarm."
"It can still be difficult to feed products that are not supported out-of-the-box."
"Technical support has been okay. It hasn't been great."
"Pay attention to false-positive event automatic correlations."
"Customer service is 4/10 - they need to provide faster responses to emails."
"It would be great if there was a feature to add in watch lists, like McAfee or QRadar have -- to keep track of IPs, domain, etc. that I have identified as being malicious."
"I knocked off a point for the learning curve compared to some of the competition and another point for the lack of native user behavior analytics but for the money you really can't do any better."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution requires a huge infrastructure and that is costly."
"Price-wise, the product is quite economical. I rate the solution's price as three or four on a scale of one to ten, where one is considered to be a very economically priced tool."
"The pricing is based on the log size."
"So far, it has been a good solution for a tight budget."
"They charge a license based on the storage. ATT AlienVault USM is a less expensive solution than IBM QRadar."
"The vulnerability management solution is worse than buying a Nessus Professional license."
"Its price is in the medium to upper range."
"It's very reasonably priced. It was one of the lowest among the ones I looked at. Licensing is pretty flexible. They can do a two-year or a three-year, even a one-year, perhaps."
"AlienVault is flexible on their pricing for unlimited licenses."
"I don't know exactly, but I know it is based on the number of logs and the retention duration, such as 30 days or something like that. So, the smallest package is about 500 a month for 30 days of logs. There is a virtual machine. You need resources for it. It is a log collecting VM. They provide the software, and you just have to load a virtual machine. So, you're going to incur some CPU RAM and storage for wherever this log collecting appliance is running, which typically is in our cloud and on our platform for the customer."
"We pay around $12,000 a year including storage."
