Reliable performance maintained but requires ongoing management and support
Hadoop was used for years, but there were problems since the people who originally set it up left the firm. The group that owned it later didn't have the technical resources to properly maintain it. Although there was nothing wrong with Hadoop itself, issues arose without proper management and upgrades.

Can transform data per clients' needs and can easily distribute reports to end users
I would recommend looking at all of the solutions currently available and then decide. I would not immediately suggest going for SAP NetWeaver. Being able to transform the data according to my requirements is a crucial feature; the phasing layers are helpful to distinguish data with respect to a specific project; analytics and reporting are very feasible; and the distribution of reports to the end users is also very easy. However, connectors need to be simplified, and technical support needs to be improved. Thus, on a scale from one to ten, I would rate SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse at eight.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Most valuable features are HDFS and Kafka: Ingestion of huge volumes and variety of unstructured/semi-structured data is feasible, and it helps us to quickly onboard a new Big Data analytics prospect."
"Apache Hadoop helps us in cases of hardware failure because it works 24/7, and sometimes servers crash in the field."
"It's primarily open source. You can handle huge data volumes and create your own views, workflows, and tables. I can also use it for real-time data streaming."
"Initially, with RDBMS alone, we had a lot of work and few servers running on-premise and on cloud for the PoC and incubation. With the use of Hadoop and ecosystem components and tools, and managing it in Amazon EC2, we have created a Big Data "lab" which helps us to centralize all our work and solutions into a single repository. This has cut down the time in terms of maintenance, development and, especially, data processing challenges."
"The most valuable feature is the database."
"The performance is pretty good."
"I recommend it for the telecom sector. I know it well, and it's a good fit."
"The most valuable features are the ability to process the machine data at a high speed, and to add structure to our data so that we can generate relevant analytics."
"Data modeling is a valuable feature."
"A robust and efficient product."
"The security and audit procedures are the most valuable features."
"It provides us with proof of data, we can centralize all of the information, check it, and then provide the information to our users."
"It is a robust system."
"It's an excellent over-all tool for managers to analyze their business."
"Transformation is a valuable feature of SAP NetWeaver. I can transform the data as per my needs or my client's needs. For example, flat tables can be transformed with respect to our requirements to combine multiple modules into one single table, and we can derive analytics."

Cons

"I think more of the solution needs to be focused around the panel processing and retrieval of data."
"Real-time data processing is weak. This solution is very difficult to run and implement."
"We would like to have more dynamics in merging this machine data with other internal data to make more meaning out of it."
"In certain cases, the configurations for dealing with data skewness do not make any sense."
"The solution needs a better tutorial. There are only documents available currently. There's a lot of YouTube videos available. However, in terms of learning, we didn't have great success trying to learn that way. There needs to be better self-paced learning."
"I would like to see more direct integration of visualization applications."
"The integration with Apache Hadoop with lots of different techniques within your business can be a challenge."
"There is a lack of virtualization and presentation layers, so you can't take it and implement it like a radio solution."
"It is difficult when your native language is not English. It is difficult for us to explain our issue and also difficult for the technical team to explain a resolution to us."
"I think more integration with other applications would be perfect."
"The product could provide more features."
"The program is difficult to learn to use"
"Design and modeling could be simplified."
"Connectors are complex, and it is difficult to understand or know which connector should be used. For instance, if I want to connect APIs, I will not be able to do it directly. I would have to go to the portal integration to get the data. Therefore, having simplified connectors will make things much easier."
"There are performance issues in terms of scalability and availability."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"This is a low cost and powerful solution."
"The price could be better. Hortonworks no longer exists, and Cloudera killed the free version of Hadoop."
"The product is open-source, but some associated licensing fees depend on the subscription level."
"The price of Apache Hadoop could be less expensive."
"We don't directly pay for it. Our clients pay for it, and they usually don't complain about the price. So, it is probably acceptable."
"If my company can use the cloud version of Apache Hadoop, particularly the cloud storage feature, it would be easier and would cost less because an on-premises deployment has a higher cost during storage, for example, though I don't know exactly how much Apache Hadoop costs."
"There are no licensing costs involved, hence money is saved on the software infrastructure."
"Do take into consider that data storage and compute capacity scale differently and hence purchasing a "boxed" / 'all-in-one" solution (software and hardware) might not be the best idea."
"Pricing is based on the number of user IDs and tyhe user ID works across a suite of products."
"The licensing cost is high for SAP NetWeaver compared to that for other products."
"All SAP products are expensive."
