What is our primary use case?
My main use case for
StarWind Virtual SAN is secure, reliable, virtualized storage. Given the amount of remediation I deal with regarding encrypted systems through ransomware,
StarWind Virtual SAN has never been ransomed or encrypted. My systems have survived two attacks where there have been attempted breaches and encryption of my business. Because of the way StarWind Virtual SAN works, my data survived.
How has it helped my organization?
StarWind Virtual SAN has positively impacted my organization as we are not having to worry about licensing costs; it is paid for, and we have the license perpetually. We pay for support as we require it. Because of my background in IT, I do not need my hands held with support. I can deal with most issues, but if I do have an issue or there is a bug, I can drop an email to StarWind support and they get back to me very quickly.
In the past when I have dealt with their other products, I drop them an email and most problems are solved within half an hour. When we have had mission-critical outages in the past, it takes normally 10 to 15 minutes and it is rectified. Compared with dealing with Broadcom, the last time we had to deal with a vSAN issue with mission-critical support, it took two and a half hours just to get through the raft and array of nonsensical systems before we could even talk to a human being.
What is most valuable?
The best features StarWind Virtual SAN offers are that it is a cost-effective, simple, reliable product that rivals ESXi and Broadcom vSAN. It just works without the horrific pricing structure that Broadcom has now brought in that is pushing people away from the VMware software. I have been using VMware software since 2006 and I have been dealing with StarWind software since 2007 when I worked out in Africa for the Botswana government. The products just work without the horrific vendor lock-in prices that you get with Broadcom.
StarWind Virtual SAN helped my data survive those attacks because part of the architecture was that the ransomware was not able to breach the SAN; it was unable to access it and encrypt the data compared with normal SAN arrays that breach through Active Directory regardless of anything else and encrypt. Because StarWind Virtual SAN did not become part of my Active Directory, it was unable to make that jump and encrypt my network.
The integration of StarWind Virtual SAN is excellent; it just integrates with everything we have used. Nutanix, ESXi, and Proxmox all work with it. It just functions.
The quick support and simplified licensing of StarWind Virtual SAN has translated into measurable benefits in terms of money saved, time saved, and fewer resources needed. Simplified licensing means measurable benefits through money saved, time saved, and fewer resources needed. It just works without any problem whatsoever.
What needs improvement?
StarWind Virtual SAN could be improved with a slight change to the interface and bringing it up to date slightly to make it align more with what people are used to. It deploys easily enough; nothing really could be improved with it as far as the actual product goes, but the interface seems a little dated.
I do not have anything else to add about needed improvements because it all works fantastically.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using StarWind Virtual SAN for about two years now, and I switched from VMware vSAN because of the amount of problems with it and the costs.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
StarWind Virtual SAN is very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I do not have specific knowledge about how scalable StarWind Virtual SAN is as we do not need to scale it. It runs 56 terabytes of data across two or three LUNs, so it must be scalable, though I just have no need to scale it any further than 56 terabytes.
How are customer service and support?
The customer support of StarWind Virtual SAN is excellent; it always has been. If I drop them a message or give them a ring, in 10 minutes, the problem is resolved. I have had this level of service since 2007.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I did previously use a different solution; it was ESXi vSAN. I switched because Broadcom's pricing went from sensible to astronomical after Broadcom purchased it. They crucified the small business and do not care.
What was our ROI?
I have seen a return on investment with StarWind Virtual SAN. I saved money, time, and needed fewer employees.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing has been fantastic. We called them up, got a demo, and downloaded it.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before choosing StarWind Virtual SAN, I did not evaluate other options this time because I already had dealt with them in the past. I had previous software for iSCSI targets for clients years ago. I did a couple of Google searches for equivalent SANs. The name came up, I got a demo, deployed it, appreciated it, and purchased it.
What other advice do I have?
My advice to others looking into using StarWind Virtual SAN is to purchase it because it works. StarWind Virtual SAN works fantastically. I give StarWind Virtual SAN a review rating of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
