Hardware agnostic and easy to set up with great support
We are an SMB IT consulting company with an infrastructure department.  Before 2019, we had been deploying HP StoreVirtual VSA in order to deliver a typical 2-node hyper-converged cluster. Since the publishing of EOL/EOS for HP StoreVirtual we had been looking for a suitable replacement.  We looked…

Saves a significant amount of money on hardware per location and does what it is supposed to do
It could be a little bit more intuitive in terms of the way you set it up initially. The interface has recently undergone a revision. I have been using the new version for only a few weeks now. The older version of the web interface for StorMagic SvSAN was a little bit clunky and not as intuitive as it could be. The newer one is a little better, but it is still a little bit clunky in places. I have not tried the centralized control called Edge Control. It probably addresses some of the issues that I have in terms of centralization and not having to log in to individual members in order to administer them. I have not used that yet, so I do not know how well that addresses the issues that I have. Currently, I have to log in to the individual StorMagic SvSAN members in order to administer them to update the software and see their status.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"As the client had acquired another company some distance away, they were concerned about having a single SAN in one location or the other. StarWind vSAN allowed us to keep a copy of the data local to each site without asking the client to pay for two SANs in addition to the two new servers they needed."
"StarWind saved us about 80% of our storage costs over our old solution."
"It includes every feature that a traditional SAN offers and so much more."
"StarWind allowed us to deploy highly available shared storage within our budget."
"It has been extremely stable for the three years we've been running it."
"The control panel is nice. It gives you a lot of good feedback as to the status and health of the VSAN."
"The performance of the solution is accurate and concise."
"This solution made it possible to deploy a new infrastructure in the shortest amount of time, at a low cost without purchasing expensive hardware storage, and use unused servers."
"It helps us prevent any data loss while working with the failover clusters."
"This synchronization is easy with StorMagic, and we can establish availability between servers."
"The most valuable feature of StorMagic SvSAN is its high availability. We have not had any downtime or data loss. Business continuity is highly important."
"We compared two solutions for this use case, but we went with StorMagic because it had more capabilities than the others. It's also more reliable, especially in production environments that require availability and sustainability."
"StorMagic SvSAN's best feature is that it is platform agnostic."
"StorMagic SvSAN is a very effective solution and the interface is good."
"What I found most valuable in StorMagic SvSAN is integration. As a software-defined storage solution, it's also very easy to use and it's the trend in the market today. StorMagic SvSAN also made the customer happy because the customer could use his existing hardware with it. The customer had rack-mounted storage, so he didn't want to purchase a dedicated hardware for storage purposes. He just upgraded his hard disk drives."
"The part I like most about it is just that it does not require a lot of touch. It does exactly what it is supposed to do, and it is straightforward."

Cons

"The documentation could be a little more concise, but, for the most part, it just works."
"Maybe in the future, the replication will be supported in more cloud providers."
"In the next release, they could make some graphs of the real-time loading, speed of storage, and interfaces. Of course, these can be viewed in other places. But, in the event of a malfunction or troubleshooting, this would be convenient."
"StarWind offers the Enterprise-level high availability (HA), deployed and easily configured .maintain and update and with little to no fuss, even the free version is incredibly capable whilst it brings a the cost of a Highly Available HCI solution down to a very cost effective point" Having used Starwind Virtual SAN for many years both for clients and for internal systems it has always done exactly what it set out to do, provide a cost effect way to run a HCI storage platform for almost any hypervisor, but it is most effective with Hyper-V, simple, easy to use, -.software monitoring should be web based to be reachable from any workstation in VLAN."
"When you will cease your contract with StarWind (for support) your product won't be updated and that is a big selling point, especially for us, as we have loads of products from StarWind."
"It is not very clear within the StarWind Management Console or the StarWind support documentation how to perform maintenance on a single node in a two-node HA cluster."
"A mobile app to sync up for overview and status would really be helpful."
"One point for improvement is to increase the performance capabilities of the Windows-based executable as compared to its Linux Controller Virtual Machine (CVM) equivalent."
"In the next release, StorMagic SvSAN should include multi-node clusters, which would allow storage spaces to be used more efficiently."
"If we want to want to replicate the VM to the cloud, or off-site, it does not allow it because of asynchronous. There is no option available."
"The deployment of StorMagic SvSAN is very small. However, you need some time to do it. It's important to make a test deployment before the real deployment."
"It could be a little bit more intuitive in terms of the way you set it up initially."
"In terms of what could be improved in StorMagic SvSAN, I don't have a major issue with it, but its user interface should be more customer-oriented."
"There are two features missing: there's no REST API functionality, and there is no date duplication in it."
"The only improvement area I can see is their licensing. For example, the memory caching feature is only available in an advanced license. Normally, it's in a standard license. It would be better if they had memory caching features in the product. Some backup features should also be in the product"
"They should enable data compression deduplication features for the platform."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We are happy with the price."
"We found that the pricing was perfect; simple and clear."
"This is a good, economical solution compared to data storage systems."
"We evaluated other options and this one was the most cost-effective."
"The StarWind VSAN business model is very cost-effective."
"When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
"StarWind is best price/performance for SMB."
"The cost, including OPEX, is lower compared to other solutions."
"70% cheaper than competitors and provides all the enterprise feature requirements at low cost."
"The licensing cost is $7,000 per two nodes for two terabytes."
"It's fairly cheap when compared to other options. But it can be improved as some features may not be available in the standard license. The vendor positions it as an edge product, so it isn't suitable to compare with VMware vSAN or Nutanix because that's another product altogether."
"The pricing of StorMagic SvSAN is fairly good because if you compare it with VMware, it's at a better price. This is an important thing to remember."
"The product has good pricing."
"While it is less than other solutions, such as vSAN, for instance, it is still significant. However, it is well worth it in terms of the quality of the product and the support that it allows me to have. We are buying the flagship product from them. We are always buying premium support and all the features that we need, so it is a little bit steep upfront, but it is less than other solutions and comes with excellent support."
"The price of the solution is reasonable. Our budget was two terabytes and the price met our use case well."
