Efficient monitoring with detailed customization, yet complexity remains
The best feature of WhatsUp Gold is the automatic generation of topology and its integration with virtualization and wireless. I have used the automated device discovery with this topology feature. The interactive map feature helps me manage the topology because sometimes we cannot draw the topology correctly, so we need to manually edit the connections. The alerting system is very tunable and customizable, but it's a little complicated to use. Many customers cannot manage it by themselves and need support from us, the provider. We always use the dashboards in the SOC, where we constantly display a dashboard or multiple dashboards. This allows us to know immediately if the connection or bandwidth is full or if the connection is broken.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Our main focus was intrusion detection, alerts, and correlation. It's easy to use AlienVault and integrate it with other alert tools because it includes lots of connectors. Either the tool is already there, or AlienVault will write an API for us if they don't have a connector for the solution that is providing the logs."
"The best thing about AlienVault USM is it being a Jack-of-All Trades solution, providing SIEM, HIDS/NIDS, FIM, NetFlow, Asset Management, Vulnerability Management, and more under one USM platform, which none of the commercial SIEM vendors like ArcSight or McAfee can boast of with such a diverse feature set."
"Every activity on the firewall is recorded, and notifications are sent with this solution."
"AlienVault gives us greater visibility into our security and tells us what we need to address."
"AlienVault's "Overview" dashboard makes it very easy to see everything going on in your network that needs your immediate attention."
"AlienVault is willing to offer flexible and competitive pricing."
"The setup of AlienVault is extremely easy; it is very simple to understand for someone who is trying a SIEM solution for the first time, and the integration of servers and other devices is extremely easy, as it is a piece of cake where you just double-click and start, and you are up and running."
"We have benefited greatly due to gaining the visibility we need for different instances."
"The threshold alerting is the most valuable feature."
"The most valuable features are network bandwidth monitoring and monitoring device health."
"It handles the basics of monitoring."
"Overall, we have been satisfied with the functionality of the product."
"We no longer have to manually search for problems because we are alerted when something in the network goes down."
"Their tech support is very good."
"The most valuable aspects of the solution are the application monitors that allow for discreet roaming on network devices."
"One thing good about WhatsUp Gold is that it is fairly stable."

Cons

"The reporting and dashboards have room for improvement."
"As this software is in the cloud, you do not have control on updates and general changes which are happening."
"Their threat intelligence platform needs to be broadened."
"I have found difficulties in searches within security events and configuring some areas looks complicated."
"Maybe logs are the problem, as the database query is too slow. If you want to search something, you need time to find it."
"The vulnerability reporting needs to have options to be able to sort or customize the output."
"USM Anywhere relies a lot on the community putting the data in. Often, you'll right-click on the attack, but nothing will be found. That's a weakness of it."
"The next release will include cloud security and it will support a hybrid IT environment, furthermore the OTX has a great added value but it will help when there is more OTX information in the database."
"This product should add other options for monitoring. It does not currently meet the broader needs of the banking industry in the version we have deployed."
"Regional product team support is not very good."
"The licensing model could be improved. Right now, the levels are too far apart. This causes the solution to be more expensive than it needs to be."
"The tool should focus on increasing its market share, as it is the only area of concern where improvements are needed."
"The new release cadence needs to be improved. It takes a while for them to add new features and functionality. There should be a quicker turnaround with new versions."
"The price could be improved. When we first started using this product, the company was new. The prices were very low then, in comparison with HP OpenView or IBM, but now the policy is too high, relative to the number of devices we have."
"I would like to see them do an enhancement to the application monitoring. A lot of other products do better application monitoring so they should do some improvements to the application monitoring."
"Integrations with other devices. I want to have a product that has full integration with my active directory so I can track user activity. I want to track my complete user activity, so I'm looking for a product to implement in the near future, which will have full integration with my network and active directory users. It became very difficult to track user activity."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Pricing is very competitive with other products and you get much more functionality from AlienVault."
"It's very reasonably priced. It was one of the lowest among the ones I looked at. Licensing is pretty flexible. They can do a two-year or a three-year, even a one-year, perhaps."
"So far, it has been a good solution for a tight budget."
"The vulnerability management solution is worse than buying a Nessus Professional license."
"It is a product that is priced in a medium range, making it neither a cheap nor a costly product."
"I rate the price of AT&T AlienVault USM a four out of five."
"Its price is much lower than McAfee ESM."
"AlienVault is certainly not nearly as expensive as Splunk or QRadar. It's decently priced, but I don't have the exact figure."
"There is a license needed to use WhatsUp Gold."
"Pricing is reasonable compared to other products."
"I'm not sure, but it's expensive. We don't pay any additional fees."
"The price of WhatsUp Gold is good."
"This is a well priced solution."
"The choice of version depends on the number of points, or devices, that you want to monitor, and this makes the product expensive."
"It is per device, per year. The pricing is very clear. If you have a service agreement, you get all of your major upgrades and minor upgrades. It was under $10,000 to go all-in with all of the different add-ons for it."
"The most valuable feature is the cost compared to other solutions."
