Positive impacts seen with improved data security and reliable support
I have six months of experience with the product, and as a consultant, the use cases for NetApp AltaVault mainly stand out for me. Regarding the deduplication feature in the product, I am interested in whether clients are using it. There are different integrations available with NetApp AltaVault, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and I want to understand how they impact data security policies in my case.

Helps us with cloud syncing
We use the solution for SNB.  A ZFS-based file system runs on our next operating system. It's a simple architecture. OpenDrive helps with cloud sync. It is just for hyperconvergence for local access.  The documentation and support could be improved. I have been using OpenDrive for five years.…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The deduplication engine. Right now, we're at about 10.5 to 11 times deduplication of our backup data."
"Most importantly is having that island into that datacenter, and being able to address things in the same console. Thus, it is irrelevant where it's stored."
"The flexibility, being able to virtualize it, port it wherever I like, test my backups, test my DR capabilities whenever I like without impacting anybody, is great."
"Being able to move data seamlessly from one-premise to the cloud (Azure). It works great. The backup solution is perfect for us."
"The solution is very easy to use and it offers great support."
"The interface is great; the GUI is great; it's so easy to work with."
"Our restore window has been cut by 10 times, from having to pull back from tape - I'd definitely recommend it."
"Leverage the SE and the technical expertise within NetApp; they offer really great services, and they'll provide you with an honest approach to how to address your business problems."
"A ZFS based file system runs on our next operating system. Its a simple architecture. OpenDrive provides valuable for cloud sync. It is just for hyperperformance local access."

Cons

"To clarify, the catalog feature is lacking, and you need to depend on somebody else."
"There are some bits it could do better. With tighter integration maybe with Veeam, or something like that, it'd be really good."
"More than a 500 volume limit. At the moment, it only supports up to 500 volumes for SnapMirror and that's a problem."
"We have had issues getting to the right person, but once you get to the right person, they are knowledgeable."
"More capacity with the basic model of the AltaVault would probably help out."
"The initial setup phase of the tool was difficult."
"NetApp's own competing products complicate things."
"The product must provide multi-gate connectivity."
"The documentation and support could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
"It is a rather expensive program."
"The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
"The price is a bit high."
"There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
"It's quite cost-effective."
"You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
