Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"In our case, the cost and high availability are the two most important factors which we were looking for in a solution.""Starwind support is excellent. They are very fast and have very good knowledge of Starwind and Hyper-V Cluster software.""The software is easy to setup and manage, and the support is excellent.""The best feature is its ease of installation and integration within a current infrastructure.""The backup is readily available for use, and the restoration process is easy.""High Availability is the best feature of product.""StarWind allows us to move virtual machines from one physical host to another, which greatly reduces the downtime required for maintenance.""Without the need for any downtime, enterprises can simply grow their storage infrastructure using StarWind Virtual SAN by adding new servers or disks to the current infrastructure."

"The single-pane-of-glass VMware interface makes configuration and management easy so you do not need IT specialists."

More Maxta Hyperconvergence Software Pros →

"The flash ability, in terms of tiering and caching, is amazing""The performance, reliability, and affordability has been most valuable.""Its technical support is excellent.""The most valuable feature is that there is no single point of failure.""The most valuable feature are the caching capabilities using the storage class memory.""It's mainly about the storage expansion, like in hyper-converged solutions."

Cons
"While StarWind.com excels in numerous areas, there are a couple of notable functionalities that it currently lacks. One of these is duplication, which could be an invaluable feature for data redundancy and backup purposes. The ability to duplicate data across different storage locations can be crucial for safeguarding against data loss, and its absence is a minor limitation in an otherwise stellar offering.""If it's possible to make a driver/solution that does not make use of the iSCSI targets of Windows, that would be great. I don't know if that's possible, however, it could make the configuration a little easier.""The documentation is good yet is still lacking in a few areas.""StarWind relies on the underlying OS to manage the "SAN files" whether that would be a RAID volume, software RAID (such as LVM), etc. It would be useful if StarWind could incorporate the actual physical drive management inside of the solution, similar to Storage Spaces Direct.""It would be helpful if StarWind provided more precise and detailed documentation explaining how to configure the solution in various scenarios, including the advantages and disadvantages of each.""I want to suggest that the complexity of the startup and shutdown procedure needs to be reduced.""Regular updates to the software are required, and subtle design changes would be welcome.""This solution should be more self-sufficient, running without creating domains or failover clusters."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"A new company took over the product and now the support for Maxta has gone way downhill."

More Maxta Hyperconvergence Software Cons →

"It is scalable, but only beyond two nodes. If I go for two nodes it's not scalable. I need to build a complete cluster from the beginning if I'm going for two nodes.""It is difficult to get a hardware compatibility certification for the solution.""More optimization could be done in terms of mirroring.""I think the online documentation needs a lot of work and so do the sizing tools.""Documentation management could be improved""The management tool within this solution could be improved. We would also like to be able to access services like Azure when using this solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
