Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most useful features are high availability and the storage snapshot backup functionality.""The deduplication and compression capabilities are powerful.""The solution runs pretty fast.""The most valuable features are the duplication and compression traffic. We have second storage that we can use for the synchronization of data between the data centers.""Good architecture and produces a lot of IOPS.""InfoSight is helpful because it is proactive support.""The replay and IOPS work well.""The performance and the processor are good."

"The solution remains stable across versions.""It has a single pane of glass and you don't have to jump around various toolsets.""The most valuable features of Nutanix Acropolis AOS are ease of management, hyper-convergence platform, and it has robust operations.""This is a very flexible solution that you are able to run however you want.""It is 100% stable. It's the most stable infrastructure that we have.""In terms of scalability, adding a number of nodes, I find that it will not be any issues.""The most valuable features are simple management and one-click upgrades.""One of the most valuable features that can be found, is the inclusion of a hypervisor for free."

Cons
"The stability can be improved.""We would like there to be more enhanced features.""The resellers did the implementation of the solution, we did not do it ourselves. We have ten people for the deployment of the solution.""In the future, I would like to see a lower-end model that has Peer Persistence functionality.""I would like to have more administrative rights, for example, root-level administrative rights to the underlying OS of the storage array. We want more access to the kind of underlying infrastructure of the storage array rather than relying on support. However, most companies are looking to have more managed solutions which is the opposite direction of what I want.""The solution could improve by having more granularity. For example, having the ability to go deeper into specific IO channels or specific latency issues that can happen would be a benefit. HPE has this ability on their side but it would be useful to have it on our side.""The solution should allow for easier configurations.""There is a new version of the Nimble and 3PAR systems called Alletra and they have a lot of new features."

More HPE Nimble Storage Cons →

"While their overall Nutanix Bible is good, they are lacking good descriptions for particular scenarios that might be helpful to many users.""The scalability of Nutanix Acropolis AOS needs improvement.""Nutanix should improve AHV to support migration VMs between clusters and storage containers. Migration between containers is possible, but it requires shutting down the VM. The procedure is long and there is no migration between clusters at all.""This solution offers excellent functionality but could use a stronger interface.""We had a few problems with the foundation machine that you can use to build your systems out. We've got it working now, but it should be improved.""In the future, I would like Acropolis to add support for publishing external storage.""There are other services that Nutanix has that could be improved, but I'm not very familiar with the other services of Nutanix, such as Era and Flow. However, they seem a bit hard for us to implement and integrate with the Nutanix Acropolis AOS and other Nutanix tools. We would not dare to implement those other Nutanix solutions into Nutanix Acropolis AOS right now. The implementation of that tool could be the problem, I am a bit hesitant to implement the other tools into Nutanix Acropolis AOS.""I believe that improvements could be made in regards to the DR in addition to deduplication and integration with others platforms. They also do not offer opportunities for network virtualization so it would be nice to see that in the future."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Nimble Storage is too expensive for our enterprise customers."
  • "I would classify it as an expensive product."
  • "HPE Nimble Storage didn't require a license at the time."
  • "The price is negotiable and when we first received the quote it was expensive, but after dealing with them and receiving a discount, the price is reasonable."
  • "The solution is a little pricey compared to others on the market."
  • "I think HPE Nimble Storage is less expensive than Primera and is the best solution for Venezuela."
  • "We pay a one-time fee for terabyte licenses, and the support is paid yearly."
  • "There is a one-time price for hardware, and with the software support, everything is included, such as software upgrades. The licensing of the solution is included in the cost of the hardware and the support is an extra cost. We have purchased support on an annual basis, but you can purchase support up front for up to seven years. We usually buy five years and near the time of the expiry, we sometimes extend it."

    Overview

Our Predictive Flash platform closes the app-data gap, giving you the fastest, most reliable access to data. By combining predictive analytics with flash storage, we radically simplify operations.
Once you’ve experienced our simplicity, you’ll never go back to traditional infrastructure again. Over 9,000 customers rely on Nimble to power their businesses, both on-premise and in the cloud.

Nutanix Acropolis AOS is a foundation operating system or "data plane.” It is the operating system for the Nutanix hyper-converged infrastructure platform. Compare this to Nutanix's "control plane" components, Prism and Calm. The Acropolis Operating System is abbreviated as AOS. It is a back-end solution for workload and resource management, as well as for provisioning and operations. Its purpose is to separate the supporting resource from the workloads that are operating, while offering a single platform to operate on. Workloads can now travel between hypervisors, cloud providers, and platforms without interruption. Nutanix Acropolis AOS is a turnkey solution that can be implemented in 60 minutes or less, out of the box. Nutanix Acropolis AOS eliminates standalone SAN or NAS-based storage and costly virtualization.

    Nutanix Acropolis AOS Features

Nutanix Acropolis AOS has many valuable key features. Some of the most useful ones include:

    • Preinstalled AHV virtualization: Nutanix Acropolis AOS includes AHV, our native virtualization solution, as well as VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization technologies. Nutanix AHV is a full enterprise virtualization solution that is deeply integrated into Acropolis and comes at no extra cost. AHV provides the functionality needed to run enterprise applications.
    • Enterprise storage: Nutanix Acropolis AOS offers a distributed storage fabric that offers enterprise-class storage services such as de-duplication, compression, encryption, and erasure coding to all types of applications. Its data locality assures the most efficient performance.
    • Platform services: Nutanix Acropolis AOS provides a comprehensive collection of software-defined platform services that enable IT organizations to centrally manage and consolidate all of their workloads on the Nutanix platform.
    • Networking services: Nutanix Acropolis AOS offers a comprehensive collection of services for securing applications with native microsegmentation, analyzing network and performance, and automating routine network tasks.
    • VXLAN:  This is a virtualization overlay network that allows for the creation of private, isolated networks in the data center. These networks are layer 2 switches to which all traffic is routed.

    Nutanix Acropolis AOS Benefits

There are many benefits to implementing Nutanix Acropolis AOS. Some of the biggest advantages the solution offers include:

    • Less hardware: With Acropolis AOS, enterprise IT can consolidate on fewer hardware components and lower costs. The solution can be deployed on virtual machines, with no need for expensive hardware. It can also be deployed by external parties.
    • Default policy-based networking: Acropolis AOS by default discovers and applies policies that govern traffic in the network. This greatly simplifies management, as it is easier to simply enable or disable policies rather than use individual firewall rules per server.
    • Network fencing is used to control traffic entering or leaving a specific VM-to-VM port group based on access rules. This provides a way of selectively enabling or disabling services across VMs within a port group to help ensure traffic is managed in an appropriate manner.

    Reviews from Real Users

Nutanix Acropolis AOS stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Two major ones are its stability and its all-inclusivity, which saves users money. PeerSpot users take note of the advantages of these features in their reviews:

Gerhard J., IT Manager at Q4 Fuel, says of the solution, “One major thing that comes up again and again is stability. Our downtime is literally based on hardware upgrades that need to be done. Acropolis is very, very user friendly. You don't have to physically have a super IT guy to manage the system.”

Another PeerSpot reviewer, a Solutions Architect at a computer software company, writes, “From a grander view, it's allowed our customers to actually reduce the amount of software that they have to purchase. Not only do they have to purchase the hypervisor, and if they're in VMware, in most cases, they're purchasing disaster recovery tools and a whole bunch of other things. However, Nutanix has it all built-in so that users have one area to manage and maintain.”
