In terms of improvements for Fortinet FortiGate, they could offer evaluation licenses, as compared to Meraki, which provides a 90-day evaluation. In Fortinet FortiGate, they do not provide standard evaluation licenses; instead, we need to request them from the OEM through the account manager for POCs. If we want to conduct a demo, we need to work with real hardware. In comparison to Cisco, we have DCloud, which helps with providing demos to customers, but in Meraki, I need to reach out to them, book a lab, and they need to provide all the hardware. I need remote access and L3 engineers to program it; only then can I offer a real-time demo to the customer.

Protects from attack software and hacking but it doesn't provide the reports in a readable format
In my opinion, image clarity is very important, because I don't get the proper image product on reports. This means that functionality is not there. My engineer does not know how he can replace an order. We attach a log after any kind of keys using a utility instead. For the internet policies that we are implementing, the policy should be based on proper protocols. We use the default policies and there are a number of third-party protocols that appear here. Management with WatchGuard XTM means that out of policy is the problem from our side. In this way, we can not do effective services for people with this one. The policy definition with WatchGuard XTM is not proper for all use case requirements. I've got weekly business reports that I am expecting attachments with from WatchGuard XTM that display data for all kinds of consideration which should be required. Main User Functionality Level Order must adhere to using the admin functionality on the registry, or else our users publish their own name. Maybe these recommendations are irrelevant, but I say that the issue to improve most with WatchGuard XTM is the Main User Function.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is user-friendly."
"If you are looking for a lifestyle solution, then FortiGate is my choice."
"The low cost of ownership was a benefit with all of the features we wanted."
"The features that I have found most valuable are the SD-WAN and their IP4 policy."
"Fortinet's scalability and stability are fine because I have three units across India, and none have gone down so far."
"The solution is used in my company since its management is very comfortable"
"The multi-tenancy feature is most valuable. It integrates very well with FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer."
"The price-to-performance ratio for using Fortinet FortiGate is always better compared to any other competitor, so they are rated better than the likes of Check Point or Palo Alto."
"The VPN to link my system to my clients, the gateway security features as my first defense layer to my client’s networks, and the firewall/NAT policy are excellent, and I also love the alias feature as it allows me to configure items by common names instead of IP address."
"Application Control is fantastic with over 2,500 applications and the granularity that we can either allow people to view but not be able to log on to Facebook; or view it and log onto it if they're in the marketing department, but not play Facebook games. There are all sorts of different options like that. So it's highly granular."
"The most valuable features of the WatchGuard product line that we appreciate and leverage the most is the UTM security suite."
"Lots of enterprise-grade features in SMB firewall Cost-price performance is at its best"
"I would recommend this product, as it is a very flexible one with probably the most intuitive configuration."
"Flawless. I have had my firebox for 3 years now and never had an issue with it."
"Security is a requirement for any organization, using WG products you can deploy faster solutions to big problems with a fair price."
"SNMP status monitoring and the Central Management Software."

Cons

"FortiManager has not been my favorite. I don't use it and cannot say I really care for FortiManager for managing the firewalls."
"I haven't had a single issue since using Fortinet."
"The pricing could be a bit better, especially when you consider how they have the most basic offering priced."
"There aren't really any negative aspects to discuss."
"They have recently acquired a CNAP solution which should be integrated into FortiGate boxes natively for protection at any application layer. Since Fortinet FortiGate has Layer 7 protection, they should integrate that as soon as they can for threat detection and network detection."
"Fortinet's support team consists of a huge networking team, because of which there is a delay in response at times."
"The solution could improve by having some additional features, such as IBS and better cloud administration."
"I would like to see improvements in some of the hard drive features on FortiGate so that we can generate reporting within a single box."
"Sometimes the local firebox management tool is flaky."
"Tech support is sometimes a little bit slow."
"I think the anti-Spam feature, and the real time log to inspect the bandwidth users both need improving."
"The setting policies need improvement. It needs an easier way to do static NAT and check on what policy is being used for that specific traffic."
"Now, you need to replace the appliance."
"Expensive Requires client-server application to use some advanced features"
"Sometimes we have had issues with the stability of the product."
"The issue that we had was that the integration with Active Directory was a bit of a hassle."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Other firewalls are more expensive than Fortinet FortiGate, such as the Azure firewall."
"The pricing for this solution is reasonable."
"The price depends on the size of the company. From the beginning, you just want to know the internet bandwidths, speed, and the number of users to be able to offer the right product and model. They have a lot of products in FortiGate according to the size of the company, like 200D and 300D."
"It is cost-effective, and provides a good value for your money. The pricing, and license renewal, is very reasonable for us."
"Its price could be better."
"For the performance that we get, the price is reasonable. There are cheaper options, but they may not deliver the same kind of performance that we want. For the performance they provide, the price is acceptable."
"It's an expensive solution."
"I think the price of Fortinet FortiGate is very reasonable."
"Get at least a maintenance contract for the updates and take a larger WatchGuard than you need. A WatchGuard creates new ways to secure your network."
"Like all other manufacturers, there are a lot of features and different pricing. The best is to talk to a representative."
"It costs less than the SO works and others (like SonicWall, Cisco, and Barracuda) without increasing so much CPU use."
"The licensing and renewal is very expensive."

Sophos UTM vs. Fortinet FortiGate
I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main…

The main difference between Watchguard and Fortinet is the operating system, and how it uses the hardware features. The user interface in Fortinet is cleaner and we can adjust network and security needs in a logical way. Point-of-care only for SSO, certificate usage does not work sometimes, but this issue is handled in new OS releases.

Hi Nick, Sorry, but I can hardly provide relevant comparison between two products as I have never used WatchGuard XTM. As I have no intention to promote certain brand, no matter how satisfied I am with FortiGate - I feel incompetent to advise on this matter. Best regards, Vladimir
