Has improved performance for mission-critical workloads and enabled seamless non-disruptive upgrades
The availability is 99.99%, which is the main factor any customer would need because their data should be available whenever they want to access it. This is one main critical thing. It is very easy to upgrade since Pure Storage FlashArray handles it well. Everything is non-disruptive now; previously, there were forklift shifts, but now that is not the case. Pure Storage FlashArray says no to forklift upgrades. Usually hardware requires downtime, but Pure Storage FlashArray has improved their footprint so that they are not asking for downtime; everything is just a non-disruptive activity, which is why customers are more inclined towards Pure Storage FlashArray. Customers want more of the models in their environment due to the performance they are giving, and everything is in one Pure1 Array console where we can view all the models on one page or just an orchestration tool. You don't miss anything; you have replication, notifications about replication, and details about which host groups replication is happening in and if that replication is successful or failed. On a daily basis, our purpose is to create volumes for infrastructure; our daily activities include creating volumes and mapping them to the host, doing any migrations from a VM, clearing the data stores, and carving the volumes to those VMs. One key factor is the data compression with a ratio of 5:1, focusing on space efficiency, inline deduplication, and the compression Pure Storage FlashArray works on; that is a major factor we can suggest to any customer. Analytical capabilities are crucial. Daily, we check the throughput and consumption, and Pure Storage FlashArray provides predictions for one year regarding usage. This prediction helps plan updates well ahead. For support, we just raise a case, and they follow up and get it done. There is also AI readiness, but with the model R2, we don't have much of that AI readiness. For others, we do have AI readiness that predicts capacity based on daily or monthly trends, enabling us to analyze how much space we need or if we need to expand the disk shelf. From an operational point of view, a good feature is that if you accidentally delete a volume, it will be retained in the destroyed state for the next twenty-four hours, which is not the same with any other vendor. I have worked in this storage domain for the past fifteen years, and this option is remarkable, benefiting any L1 or L2 engineer. Additionally, from a compliance perspective, Pure Storage FlashArray has REST APIs enabled. I have not explored automation much, but from a security standpoint, it is strong with encryption data. If you want to automate, you can easily integrate with all clouds and explore Pure Cloud for scheduling workloads, including volume creation. Customers find benefit in Pure Storage FlashArray's single management pane of glass due to the dual controller and active-active setup. If one of the controllers goes down, all workloads automatically shift to the other controller, ensuring their data is safe and accessible at all times. This is a highlighted feature that any customer desires because their data should always be accessible. For SAN workloads, we use Pure Storage FlashArray because for SAN FC fiber channel, we don't use it; we use NetApp for NAS activities. We have clearly split this, so SAN is for mission-critical applications, while network-attached storage handles file systems. This architecture helps us maximize the benefit from Pure Storage FlashArray due to the significant workloads from this giant retail client. From a footprint and energy consumption perspective, you can see energy consumption from the Pure1 storage portal on a daily basis, and it is very compact. The three models we use consume only three units, which is quite low. From a footprint and data center perspective, it doesn't occupy much space. As everything moves to cloud, there are requirements to avoid excess spending on data centers, and Pure Storage FlashArray is efficient in energy consumption and is environmentally friendly.

Ease of implementation and robust performance enhance multi-OEM support experience
We are limited only to hardware replacement, not administration tasks. We work on AMC products through Annual Maintenance Contracts. We provide support up to the 680 model. The XT680F is a newer model, and we support from 380F to 680F. The FlashSystem 8000 series is all-flash, and there is also a 5000 series flash model. We can compare IBM DS series, including the 8000 series for recommendations. For NetApp, we can recommend the FAS 8000 series.

Point-in-time restore capabilities are built into the storage appliance
Our first impression when we were introduced to the product was very good. I still think it's very good. They are truly different. The whole product is based on point-in-time restore capabilities built into their storage appliance, and no one else I know does that. I'd rate it a 10 out of 10 because it does everything that we have asked it to do.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"If you need faster storage and a good product, this is the one you should go ahead with."
"The management features are well organized and they have a very good dashboard."
"The most valuable feature is its speed."
"The best features of Pure Storage FlashArray are its ease of use and user-friendly interface, and the performance allows all types of services to be visualized from a single point of interface, making it more robust and user-friendly."
"The most valuable features of Pure Storage FlashArray are the management view of the solutions, ease of provision, and deprovision, it is fantastic."
"They can provide a lot of performance, so there is not a lot of difference, but efficiency is something customers value because the compression can be up to twice of the second competitor."
"We like the speed. It's very low latency. In virtualization, you can mask lots of problems, and even in code you can mask lots of problems, with low latency. It's just pure speed and low latency."
"All updates, upgrades, and hardware work are all performed on-line with no impact."
"The multiprotocol support. It's supporting NFS, fiber channel, CIFS, and these kinds of things. The multiprotocol is very attractive."
"From a functionality perspective on cost-effectiveness, it is exceeding all expectations."
"User friendly interface"
"We will probably implement it in other locations that we have as well, since we currently only use it at our main location."
"It has the same operating system for both file and block, and it actually simplifies everything. And it's much smaller compared to VNX."
"We're able to access it from just about anywhere, as long as we have access to a browser. That feature is really neat because sometimes we will go to a different data center or a different site, and if we need to access it to see a LUN or to see any type of storage, we can do that. That's one of the big takeaways with Unity."
"On a scale from one to 10, I'd probably give EMC customer support an 11. It's been really good. We do have premium support, which means if we have a problem, it gets solved really quickly."
"It is definitely one of the most robust, solid, well-performing products that I have dealt with, and it is set it and forget it, which is wonderful for my peace of mind."
"Reduxio provides a means of backing up the data that you store in it down to one second granularity."
"Reduxio delivers a self-contained system with all of the features rolled in and functional."
"Because of its ability to recover data instantly, we made the decision to make Reduxio our primary storage."
"We are able to recover to the second, if needed, our data. This greatly improves restore capability, for example, if there is a cryptolocker outbreak or data loss."
"I like the performance. I think it's what you call a hybrid SAN. It has solid state drives and, of course, regular optical drives, which would make performance a lot better, faster."
"Enables multiple hosts access to the virtual machines by providing for moving VMs due to maintenance or host failure."
"Our first impression of Reduxio was that it was simple to setup and use, and highly reliable."
"I have an every second undo button for all my applications. I call Reduxio "the ransomware killer"."

Cons

"Had some issues with Purity not being entirely compatible with VMware ESXi."
"Some of the issues are that it's probably not on a par with other large storage enterprise type products."
"The credentials on the iSCSI interface are only available to type in with the Chrome browser, and not with the Firefox browser."
"We have not had a good experience with the IBM device."
"Technical support needs improvement. With respect to them being able to respond, they're more marketing people, less technical."
"Pure Storage had operational challenges between 2016 to 2018, impacting perceived reliability."
"The price of this solution could be improved."
"I wish they could add more of a monitor on the machine itself so you don't have to rely on a KVM or something to look at the display, such as an onboard diagnostic display."
"Compression and block deduplication on non-all-flash solutions."
"One area of improvement is replication. We are also using Oracle virtual machines, and when you are using systems from other vendors, the process of replicating from Unity through OLVM is more laborious than when we were using VPLEX."
"When I see other products—like HP, Huawei, and Lenovo—from competitors, I have seen a lot of disadvantages with EMC, price-wise."
"Maybe deduplication would be something that would be better to have. Also, it's a fairly new management interface, so work is still being done on that. But compared to other vendors and previous EMC storage, the Unity is really good."
"What I'd like to see is a little more detail on the networking side. I can go into where it's showing me the replication, but when I go into the network it just gives me broad-based information. I don't know which replication job is actually feeding it. I have to go in and rely on other apps."
"Things that could be improved include one-to-many replication, data deduplication, and asynchronous Fibre Channel replication. It is asynchronous on iSCSI and I would like to have that on the Fibre Channel. Unisphere-wise, I have to log in to each Unity as a unique environment. In VNX, I logged in to the domain and I was logged in to every VNX. So that's missing."
"The pricing is a bit higher than expected, and this is an area where I see room for improvement."
"To the best of my knowledge, migration from VNX to Unity without VPLEX/RecoverPoint is not available right now."
"It would be helpful to have a mobile app to monitor the storage array remotely."
"Integration is needed with other virtual vendors like VMware, Veeam, Hyper-V; that integration needs to be deeper, not just the way that they're using it now. I know that it's under development, but I think this is one of the disadvantages, for now, as a young company. They have to work with the other players on the market."
"I am waiting on a feature set in the new version which should allow me to replicate between Reduxio iSCSI SANs for disaster recovery and also to 3rd party iSCSI SANs which are cheaper for an archive or DR target."
"The only thing that I would point out would be the basic administration management of the machine. Everything has rights, meaning that there's either all control or no delegated control. So to sum that up, it would be a feature request for delegated management in the administrative console."
"The latest release limits web access to the admin console via Chrome only, and that's a bit of a hassle. Would definitely prefer something less restrictive there."
"We had a brief hiccup, a brief outage, during one upgrade process, but it wasn't too extreme."
"Needs to be made easier to use with slightly older versions of VMware."
"Needs some hooks into cloud storage for backup. Also they should update the system to use additional secondary storage as a resource."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We have 16 or 18 arrays. We like to do the three-year support model so that we get Evergreen and therefore, we get free upgrades. We pay around more than 1.5 million dollars."
"Because of the SSD, it is cheaper because I am not purchasing so many disks."
"It is a more expensive solution, but it is worth it. You are getting what you paid for."
"The Evergreen Storage subscription is a really cool concept. As long as we maintain our subscription, we will get new controllers every three years and really never have a forklift upgrade like we currently are doing. Just that future-proofing is an ease off of my mind to know that I won't have to do what I'm dong right now again."
"Pricing is moderate. It is neither cheap nor expensive."
"The licensing is $100,000."
"The price, in general, is around $100,000, however, I know it costs more."
"We feel that the pricing is fair and the licensing process was easy for both."
"Licensing is a little bit confusing. Going through everything with them, there are a lot of line items to go over. Every single thing is broken down into a line item, and it starts to get really confusing in terms of what we're actually purchasing when it comes to the product."
"The pricing was quite okay compared to others. We probably got it cheaper because we were the first ones out of the gate, but I would say that it's good value for the money."
"We purchased a five-year warranty."
"It was easy to order. We are a big Dell shop, so it was easy to purchase and get it in place, then up and running."
"At the end of the day, the licensing cost is key, because every customer has a pain point, that the cost of each piece is high. So if they would bundle everything in a package, that is how the competitors are selling their footprint."
"The solution is extremely functional for the price that we pay for it. It is worth the investment."
"I rate Dell Unity XT’s pricing a nine out of ten."
"We checked both HP and Dell and we determined that Dell EMC was a better option."
"The licensing is very simple with Reduxio. It is actually one of the attractions, unlike some of the other products. The other product we're using, in some of its incarnations, has extremely complex pricing, with every spindle having an associated license and fees. With Reduxio it's very simple. For the box - the hardware comes in essentially one configuration for the chassis, the unit (and you can buy multiple units and daisy-chain them) - there is no "a-la-carte," so many drives of this kind or that kind, etc. It has a basic hardware configuration. Then, through the software license, they allocate or assign you the right to use the full capacity, or half of it, or a quarter of it. Of course, if you're not using the full capacity but need to, it is a simple phone call to upgrade. It's as simple as it gets."
"I think the pricing is good value, because you're not just buying a storage array, you're buying a backup solution and a DR solution and a "time machine" solution, all bundled in one storage array. When we had NetApp storage we had to then go out and buy a copy of Veeam which is a backup solution. With the Reduxio, you still need to do backups but you don't need that software product."
"It was the best price for capacity and speed on a hybrid array I could find."
"They have very competitive pricing and were able to work within our budget constraints as a public school."
"You want the best, you've got to pay for the best, that's all. In terms of licensing, just work with your VAR. The features, overall, were just too good to pass up, even though it comes at a premium."
"Depending on your cost of data loss, one ransomware or accidental deletion could pay for a Reduxio appliance."
"The pricing and licensing were favorable."
"For less money than my previous solution, I receive way more performance and backup features that far surpass anything on the market."
