We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The email archiving feature is very smooth and better than others.""It never fails. Sometimes we miss a backup, but there's always a reason for it, and it's not the fault of Commvault. In the last three years, we've never had to open a ticket with Commvault.""What is most valuable to me are the search features, where you can search through large backup data sets and find what you're looking for. Our data sets are so big that we're over the petabyte mark. To find a specific file for a specific user out of 10,000 users is a challenge... If we can glean from them a general description of where it might be, the search feature comes in very handy to actually locate it and restore it for them.""The most valuable feature is the deduplication ratio. It saves most of our space and reduces the network traffic.""The VM backups and the recovery from cloud infrastructure are valuable.""We have multiple workloads, including SQL, Oracle, SAP HANA, especially Sybase, as well as file systems, VMs, and Exchange mailboxes. Commvault provides very good support for them.""Commvault gives us a single platform to manage and recover our data. Since we are a research organization, backup is one of the most critical parts of our IT operations and services. Internally, we run it as a managed service, and there is a single console that makes it easy for management to see the performance.""The most valuable features of Commvault Hyperscale X are the full responsibilities inclined in conversion with high responsibility rates."

"Any time I have needed anything, from a simple question to someone to be onsite, the customer service has been exceptional.""The biggest feature, and one of the reasons we use it with the file shares, is its continuous Snapshotting. We can go back to almost to any point in time, not only to last night at midnight or a week ago, but 10 minutes ago or three-hours-and-so-many-seconds, or whatever the case may be. We already had a brush with ransomware in the past, so it's good to know we can dial back to just before a mishap happens.""It needs integration with cloud vendors for remote storage, and to be able to restore a single machine from a specific volume.""The ability to target existing remote storage with NoRestore is going to allow us to leverage existing storage without an increased financial investment.""It's very intuitive, has a very modern interface. Instead of making the user set up a million parameters for things that the system knows better anyway, they put all the intelligence in the product and made the controls much easier.""The whole product is based on point-in-time restore capabilities built into their storage appliance, and no one else I know does that.""By using the BackDating option we can restore volumes based on time. It also reduces volumes and maintenance time.""We are getting 4.4:1 data reduction, which means we will be able to squeeze over 120TB into 2U. This is more than enough capacity for us."

Cons
"The new HTML5-based management portals are very nice, but do not yet have all of the features of the Java-based client.""The initial setup was complex.""Commvault HyperScale X is more expensive for hybrid environments than traditional solutions.""Command Center definitely gives us a complete view of our data. But finding some of the granular, very small items that we sometimes have to find, such as auxiliary copies for tapes, I still find that it's easier to navigate and, sometimes, only possible to find them using the CommCell tool.""For simpler environments, they have some templates for startups. Possibly for a smaller environment, they need to do more automatic configuration and selections of users who want to do backups. This is mainly for smaller environments. I would like them to have the same system fit for all environments: small and big environments. Currently, we have to do a lot of configuration of the layout, which takes time. This solution is appropriate for enterprise-level enterprise, but I would like it to be easier to use for SMB environments.""They could work on the implementation of the features.""There are two ways to use it and I prefer the web-based one over the app. I wish they were a little bit more matched in what they offer because the features aren't as available in the web-based interface as they are in the app.""Additional SaaS application support would be good... we have SaaS applications that may not be big enough for Commvault to support yet. Box.com is one we've asked about for years, and it's just not on the radar, as far as I know."

More Commvault Cloud Cons →

"They're trying to do this, but they need to show more what their growth plan is, the development, what the next steps are, the future.""There is only thing I can think of at the moment, that would be detailed printable reports.""I would love to see deeper integration with VMware vSphere/vCenter. Right now, I can edit existing Reduxio datastore sizes in the vSphere web client. Provisioning new datastores that way would be nice.""The user interface for the web console could be more user-friendly, while it is flashy, how to find functions is not necessarily obvious.""I would love an iPhone app to monitor my system from outside the firewall.""I am waiting for the vSphere Plug-In with individual VM level control.""It would be nice feature if the GUI had an option to export the current unit configuration to a file or an email recipient. In case of a disaster, this way it would be quicker to get a replacement unit up and running again.""A centralized management would be nice, the ability to manage all cluster in one management portal."

  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."

  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."
