Offers efficient data management with robust features and reliable performance
Dell PowerProtect DD (Data Domain) can be improved in terms of price. While Dell is providing a proper device, other solutions, such as Symantec, can replicate their data through any NAS storage. Although their deduplication and compression might not be as effective, they can still accomplish the task. Medium-level and SME-level businesses can easily utilize this feature, but Dell PowerProtect DD (Data Domain) is a relatively expensive solution to propose to customers.

Manageable and comprehensive and integrates robust backup features for core banking
It's adequate for my core banking, however, I am looking for another solution for all systems. It is not compatible with other operating systems like Windows or Linux, and lacks a consolidated dashboard from Browser Spectrum. This is why I am searching for another solution. The product also lacks any centralized graphical user interface (GUI), such as Jarek Pod, and I am limited to using a console-based text user interface, which my local partner handles completely.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The licensing model is the most valuable aspect of Dell PowerProtect DD"
"The most important feature is the level of data compression provided by Dell EMC. It's a leader in data compression and deduplication, and the level of compression isn't available with any other vendors in the market."
"The most valuable feature of Dell PowerProtect DD (Data Domain) is its deduplication capability."
"We are very satisfied with this solution. It's easy to use and efficient."
"It is secure, reliable, and has officer support."
"It works within backup windows and has got good deduplication."
"The compatibility within the Dell PowerProtect DD portfolio makes data management more seamless. This integrated solution improves efficiency in our data center and simplifies operations by relying on a single company for servers and storage."
"It's very easy to use the domain once it's been set up. The interface is also user-friendly."
"It is scalable beyond anything my customers ever aspire to."
"Once it is completed properly, it is low maintenance. Most of the functions do not require much deliberation. It is all the blueprints and technologies laid out, and it is straight forward."
"Scalability, performance, mass platform coverage. It's one of the few backup products on the market right now which an organization can bring in and it will serve all of their backup needs. It's a completely centralized solution."
"You can do restores very quickly. You can mount a drive and restore it right from the drive."
"The file-restoring feature is the most valuable."
"Overall, my experience with the solution is very positive, and I rate it a 9 out of 10."
"Nothing beats this solution for file backup."
"We have been using it for several years, and it is quite reliable and predictable. We are quite comfortable with this solution. They're coming up with new features as well. It has good scalability, and it provides good integrations with business-critical applications or databases, such as SAP HANA. It works as expected, and we don't see any issues."

Cons

"They need to make migration easier."
"We have had deduplication and replication issues. When we used another backup software we noticed that it didn't have the same issues."
"Its management can be improved."
"We are not able to deal directly with the OEM we have to go to their partners in Nigeria."
"Dell PowerProtect DD (Data Domain) is a relatively expensive solution to propose to customers."
"Integration with cybersecurity measures can be enhanced, particularly with ransomware protection."
"I would like to see some kind of integration with the ransomware in the next release."
"When you use Data Domain, you have to have at least 20% free space so it can work properly. Sometimes we struggle with that, because we wanted to use all the free space, but then Data Domain becomes really slow. I understand that 20% is needed to process all the data, and doing the duplication and compression and all that, but it would be a big improvement if they did not require that 20%, because it is just too much to have available."
"Integration with Windows environments needs improvement. It should be more "assisted", both at the application and database level. It remains a product that fits better in Unix/Linux environments than in Windows environments, given its configuration procedures."
"IBM's support hasn't been so good in the last few years."
"Most customers still struggle with the reporting piece, especially generating reports. I think it needs some improvements in this area."
"We would like to see bare-metal restorers."
"The solution should improve the ability to monitor backup failure."
"I would like to see monitoring within the platform: monitoring for storage pools and monitoring for the server's health (e.g., CPU and memory)."
"Our new leadership has pushed us to go more toward the cloud, so we are definitely going to leverage anything we can in that direction."
"I should be able to backup Linux. I would like SUSE for Linux on POWER. Right now, we have to use Storex, which is a pain to use."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It could be more competitively priced. Its licensing was for five years. Obviously, the support will get renewed at some stage, but that's it."
"The approximate license cost for Dell PowerProtect DD (Data Domain) is around 5,00,000."
"The price is on the high side."
"If we do not move to the cloud solution and stay with our on-premise version we will miss some new features."
"The yearly subscription is very affordable for our customers, but the price could be a little cheaper overall."
"In Naira it was twenty-five or twenty-seven million (approximately $75,000 USD) for the implementation and maintenance cost for three years."
"It is expensive, but the performance and deduplication cover for the cost."
"Dell PowerProtect DD's pricing is expensive, and there is no option for perpetual licensing."
"IBM Storage Protect is not expensive and fits the needs of all business types. The licensing is based on a capacity-based model. You can take a license for one, two, or three terabytes."
"The license model that they have at IBM, which is due to volume, from a certain volume onward is not the right license model."
"It is really expensive. Its price is not good for Latin America. Its price is good for the United States or Europe."
"The platform is neither highly priced nor inexpensive. I rate the pricing a seven out of ten."
"The pricing is a little expensive for our current employer, so they want to move to a cheaper solution."
"The price of IBM Spectrum Protect is expensive. However, there are a few packages and it is unclear because, for the entry suite they have both options, which are the back-end storage capacity and the front-end storage capacity."
"The pricing of the solution is high in comparison to other products on the market. For example, IBM and Symantec have less costly options."
"License-wise regarding IBM, it's licensed per terabyte. And that is after compression and deduplication."

The biggest difference is that Data Domain is an appliance storage system (SW + HW storage) but Spectrum is a software (licenses) solution only.

I would look at the way they dedup. DataDomain uses variable-length deduplication so they are very effective. I do not know anything about the IBM product, but we have dealt with IBM and in my opinion, the difference that is going to make the biggest impact is the way they sell TCO. EMC almost negatively impacts themselves by giving a more realistic and often more expensive quote, where IBM gives a seemingly cheaper solution, but later on, it works out more.
