Have supported critical environments despite room for improvement in legacy backup options
It is very efficient in cyber resilience. Deduplication, automation, and everything is very efficient. It is multi-cloud enabled and has broad protections. The software delivers flexible and efficient backup and recovery options through its cyber resiliency features. Dell PowerProtect Manager provides insights in managing backup processes. Its encryption mechanisms are very efficient, helping to secure sensitive data. Its integration with Dell EMC Data Domain is very good. It is easy to integrate with Data Domain. Multi-cloud options are enabled, and backup in cloud options exist in Dell Avamar.

Custom alerts and rich performance metrics have improved server monitoring and storage planning
We use customizable alerts extensively with different services, because the exchange services are different from Active Directory or DNS or anything else. We have customizable alerts for each service. I do not use the historical data trends that predict future storage needs. Perhaps some of my colleagues use it, but I do not. I would like to see a focus on broadcast services in the future to make it better. Broadcast services, specifically TV broadcast services, would be valuable to us because we come from a broadcast technology background and would appreciate having some features related to that. I would rate this review as an eight out of ten.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Dell Avamar has helped our organization by allowing us to do backups."
"The solution is very user-friendly."
"The performance of Dell EMC Avamar is good."
"I think the brand is very good. Support is also very nice for end users and integration with EMC products for businesses."
"The deduplication feature is the best aspect of the solution."
"The setup is very easy."
"We love the instant recovery functionality. It's very useful."
"The product is very powerful and offers very good performance."
"The initial setup is very straightforward."

Cons

"There are instances where backups fail on certain applications, which is an area that could be improved."
"The client caches and deduplication system have a few problems."
"We'd like to see something that could also work with Unix servers and physical servers to have a unified solution that works with everything."
"It's very slow to backup and store information. It has two consoles and an application which are more difficult to use than a solution like Veeam."
"My only concern is that there is no tape backup."
"Avamar cannot back up Nutanix as a virtual solution."
"Technical support should be more knowledgeable."
"I have found the support from Dell EMC Avamar to be not as good as Veeam. The time it takes to receive support could be improved. However, once we have the support the agents are knowledgeable and helpful."
"The solution could always be more easily scalable."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I'm not sure, but perhaps the pricing could be done better at the moment."
"Dell Avamar is expensive."
"The current pricing is generally satisfactory."
"It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
"The solution is expensive."
"Its price should be reduced. It would be good if you could pay as per usage, and there is a subscription model like VMware. There should be some flexibility because sometimes, the customer only uses the backup for one month or three months. Currently, I have to pay whether I use it or not. Its licensing should be flexible and based on consumption."
"The cost of the solution is very expensive."
"Its licensing is weird. It is not just the licenses; we also purchase hardware. With most software products, such as Veeam, Commvault, and Data Protector, there is no hardware purchase at the same time. Because Avamar and Data Domain are tied together, they have an integrated pipe. You can separate them, but basically, they're designed to work as a couple. Because the Data Domain backend is designed to do dedupe and compression, we get 60:1. When you count it, you count it as a straight compression, but of course, that's with dedupe and some other stuff. You have to buy the hardware, the licensing, and the software at the same time. So, it's not just software."
