We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We have VMware, Hyper-V, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL. We have a lot of different systems, and all of them are supported under one licensing agreement. That's one of the benefits.""We can use it on-premises and in the cloud.""The solution is very stable and offers a good level of performance.""I can collect the target data, then we connect it to Commvault. There is not another system that can connect to our target database or target storage. This is very important for us, because there is the threat of malware right now. This can protect not only the product, but also the backup data from outside threats.""It never fails. Sometimes we miss a backup, but there's always a reason for it, and it's not the fault of Commvault. In the last three years, we've never had to open a ticket with Commvault.""Commvault provides data protection. Their engine is ransomware-agnostic so ransomware doesn't compromise our backup data. Therefore, we can rely on their data protection to recover and back up our production system.""Commvault can perform a backup no matter where you are, and it takes a backup every four hours. No matter when you come to the office, it'll take a backup if you're connected to the internet and check the system for online availability.""It helped us reduce the number of servers that are required for a stable operation."

"The solution can scale as needed.""It's a very good solution if you want to protect your data across two data centers, or you have a middle man or many administrators who use these solutions for protecting their data. It's very reliable compared to other solutions that are most often not storage-based.""Backup and application continuity are most valuable.""One of the most valuable features is real-time replication. The version we're using is reliable and easy to deploy.""The most important feature is that if I want to test the database at the disaster recovery site, I can take a snapshot, test it, and then revert it back to the original state without needing to restore the complete database from the primary data center to the disaster recovery.""You can see how the logs are applied, check the apply time, and how far behind the standby is at any given time."

Cons
"Commvault is complex even if the product has comprehensive solutions and covers pretty much every technology out there. There's no unified way to manage all of the products on one single console.""When we send a query to Commvault, they take a long time to answer our questions.""We do not use Command Center, but we are using CommCell Console. We're navigating and manipulating the entire environment by using CommCell Console, and we are comfortable with it. We didn't find Command Center user-friendly. We found it a bit difficult to use. It decreases the efficiency of the tasks to be performed. It was probably implemented as a centralized application to manage all environments, but it was probably not a good idea. I and my colleagues across the globe are comfortable with using CommCell Console rather than Command Center.""The only problem is that some of what we snap most of is the VMs. We found about 10% of the VMs that we can't snap because they're too interactive. It actually causes the application to crash.""Commvault could make the product more cost-effective on the public cloud side. We are using this solution to back up whatever is still on-prem. We are not using it to back up what is on the public cloud because we have a native backup solution for that, which is provided by the vendor. As our footprint gets bigger, we will continue to evaluate this, but the last time that we did a cost analysis, the cost was not comparable to the solution that public clouds are offering.""Commvault is a rich system that might scare somebody the first time they see it because it feels so huge.""Sometimes the web page doesn't work. I don't know if it's an outage or if there is maintenance going on in the background. From time to time, Commvault will suddenly stop taking backups for some intervals.""The local support could be improved."

More Commvault Complete Data Protection Cons →

"We would like to be able to see the date time stamp when you execute DGMGRL commands.""The usage of block storage devices in the cloud or migration of a type of storage from one site to another site can be improved. Currently, we have to use multi-node to single node because of the lack of storage support on the Azure side. It did not really work. Our DBA had to spend a lot of time tweaking the Data Guard tools, or the underlying Oracle VMs, to make sure that Data Guard would run on top of different types of storage. So, if it can support transporting or getting from one type of storage to another type of storage in a different site or a different technology, it would be very helpful.""The IP implementation and maintenance are a little bit hard to manage across Oracle solutions, including Oracle Data Guard.""They may need to include the monitoring and the alerting part in Data Guard.""Oracle could be improved by the ability to manage it on the cloud. This on-premises version is secure and reliable, but I'm sure that they will soon provide a cloud solution that will be even better. In one to two years, we will probably move to the cloud—we have already moved to the cloud with Microsoft Exchange, but our databases are still on-premises. I would prefer managing a cloud version of Oracle.""Overall, there are some operational issues that need to be dealt with."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "In India, this is a very expensive product."
  • "Its cost is reasonable, but anybody else can do better benchmarking."
  • "Licensing fees are billed on a yearly basis."
  • "It is cheaper than NetBackup, but its price can be lower. If a good solution can be cheaper, it is always an advantage. Its licensing is on a yearly basis."
  • "It would not be affordable for small to medium size organizations."
  • "The pricing has improved. It is simplified compared to the way that it was a few years ago. It is fairly straightforward and pretty easy to articulate to customers, which is handy."
  • "One of the most interesting aspects is that the licensing model can be modified. We're paying for our licensing by the client, as opposed to the size of the footprint of the backup, which decreased our cost by about 20 percent."
  • "It is a bit more than other products, but when you consider the time savings, it is saving money."

    Overview

Commvault® Complete Data Protection is a data protection and information management solution that runs on a single platform with a unified code base. Commvault enables companies worldwide to protect, access, and use all their data, anywhere and anytime, turning data into a powerful strategic asset. Commvault provides the resources and expertise to accelerate the return to normal business operations after a data loss event or an attack.

After installing the Commvault software, the data is processed by the agent software on client computers and backed up through the “MediaAgent” (Commvault’s data manager) to a hard disk or to cloud storage. All activity in the environment is backed up by a centralized server. Commvault users can then access the protected data using web browsers from desktop or mobile devices. The Commvault software is available across both cloud and on-premises environments.

    Commvault Complete Data Protection Features:

With Commvault, users can easily back up, restore, archive, replicate, transfer, and search data. Commvault offers its customers:

    Reviews from Real Users

Commvault stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Some of the major ones are its backup, recovery, and data protection features as well as its centralized management.

Sheron B. a systems engineer at PAREXEL International Corporation writes, “I like that you have complete hooks into and total control of your data. The data is well-protected. It doesn't age off until it's copied. That's a big feature right there. When you reach the end of your retention, it does not expire until the secondary copy is completed. That allows you to hold onto data that otherwise would have aged off by retention. I like that feature. It's hard to just delete or lose data using the Commvault platform.

PeerSpot users note the effectiveness of Commvault. An engineer at a tech services company writes, "When it comes to recovery, Commvault is undeniably one of the best technologies out there. It's got all the different granularity levels that a business requires to get your information back to production. For example, we have their commission discovery, individual items recovery, mailbox recovery, databases, and different tables. Some databases can be recovered individually. This level of granularity enables us to get the most value out of the product."

Oracle Data Guard ensures high availability, data protection, and disaster recovery for enterprise data. Data Guard provides a comprehensive set of services that create, maintain, manage, and monitor one or more standby databases to enable production Oracle databases to survive disasters and data corruptions. Data Guard can be used with traditional backup, restoration, and cluster techniques to provide a high level of data protection and data availability.
