We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It has a very intuitive user interface, which every user able to manage the basic functionality of a PC will be able to work with and produce quite satisfactory results.""The templates are a valuable feature. You can make templates. There is a space inside where you can create pages. When you use the template, the page auto-generates text and images. You do not have to think about the structure of your page as well, which I think is a very good thing for a user. Because usually when you're in front of a blank page, it can be a bit dreadful to know where to start.""The solution helped us to see where we were going wrong and where we were doing good, and that helped us to make proper decisions""The integration's very good. You still have integration with lots of third party products, and it's very good.""It is easy to use.""The best feature is the automatic tagging of information in documents. The automatic algorithm highlights irrelevant information that conflict with the actual documents.""With respect to our experiences with Confluence, we haven't had any issues.""I love the reports and the Confluence board."

"The web/mobile/portal integration was one of the features that we found most valuable, primarily because it reduced our development time.""The look and feel and the user interface are great.""We chose Liferay because it is open-source and that we can make any number of users apply, register into the system and use the system, as opposed to other solutions where the cost is based on user licenses. This is one of the most attractive features.""The solution is easy to install.""Manageability is very good and probably the most valuable part of a tool of this type. There is a little more of a learning curve than you have with a simple tool, but a business user can learn to manage the system as an administrator very easily.""It allows us to arrange and develop new ideas, then incorporate them into the portal. We can create a one stop information center, so people can access the information from one window.""I think that it could be interesting to expand the eCommerce capabilities to the B2C sector.""The integration capabilities of the product are super easy to use."

More Liferay Digital Experience Platform Pros →

"There is not just one valuable feature; it is all of them working together.""OneDrive and SharePoint provide a secure, fully auditable way of storing information.""Staff training is reduced because learning basic SharePoint is not as complicated as an EDRMS.""Removed the need of paper storage and people flow into the office.""Its configuration management ability is critical for document-based systems.""It facilitates collaboration and the ability to create custom workflows.""The ability to take Excel files and make them dynamic SharePoint lists with instant reporting capabilities has been a major benefit.""Helps with document collaboration and workflow."

More SharePoint Pros →

Cons
"I would like to see the text editor upgraded from its current limited abilities.""There is room for improvement in maybe the tree structure for articles. If you have a lot of articles, it becomes difficult to navigate.""There needs to be a flexible pricing model, where we can pick and choose services and customize our pricing model.""RAM usage seems to be higher than it should be.""The roadmap feature should be made easier to work with and modify. It's not really scalable.""Managing user permissions and credentials could be easier.""Space maintenance could be made a little more user-friendly.""When you are creating a table in Confluence, there is no tool to export it into Excel sheet for quick references. We can only export it as an a PDF file, but not into an editable file."

More Atlassian Confluence Cons →

"The documentation provided needs to be more detailed. It's sometimes hard to develop things because the documentation is so sparse.""It could be improved in terms of adding filters to some of the rules. Therefore, you can retain how long a document would need to stay in an archive.""The plugins should be more affordable.""The integration and configuration need to be simplified.""It could have better built-in integration with a wider variety of extensions out-of-the-box.""Social area and capabilities need improvement."

More Liferay Digital Experience Platform Cons →

"During uptime under our network, it is hard to find info when content is hefty.""One issue is that when users mistakenly hide files or set permissions incorrectly, it can lead to files becoming inaccessible, requiring intervention from Microsoft support to resolve.""We do sell Hyland OnBase, which is probably a competitor to SharePoint and does a lot more. In our own organization, we haven't had a need for it, but certainly, for our customers, we are finding that to be a better fit. In terms of the technical reasons for that, I'm not involved much on that side, so I can't give specifics, but there is certainly room for them to improve or add on certain features that clearly are not available in SharePoint, but they are available in Hyland OnBase.""Search can be improved a lot because we are always trying to compare it with Google Search. Beyond that, it would be helpful to tag the documents.""It is too heavy. MS should not have paid foreign coders dollars per each row of code. They wasted the stability and reliability in the end.""SharePoint’s scalability could be improved.""You still need a bit of expertise to add branding.""The support is the worst. It is bad when Microsoft support does not even know what to do and you have to tell them. Also, they take too long to solve a problem."

At Mediacurrent we often get requests to compare Drupal to other platforms used for intranet sites and social business platforms (like https://dev.twitter.com/ for example). This is often referred to as “Social Business Software”, which has grown in popularity in recent years. I decided to do a round-up of a couple of the more well known platforms and compare their products to Drupal. In this roundup we will be comparing Jive, Sharepoint and Drupal Commons. Drupal Commons is a popular distribution created by Acquia to compete with some of these other proprietary platforms. There are many other options out there, commercial and otherwise, to compare with Drupal but I want to focus on Jive and Sharepoint for a couple of reasons. I chose Jive because it is one of the leading competitors in this space in respect to market share. Next, I chose Sharepoint because I have some history with Sharepoint. This experience dates back to when I built www.adhe.edu with Sharepoint 2007 a few years ago. I subsequently wrote this blog entry about my experience shortly after joining Mediacurrent. This roundup will also act as a refresher for those who read my original “Drupal vs. Sharepoint” blog. Yammer, which was recently bought by Microsoft and is the tool we currently use for office communication will also get some mentions throughout this article. As I went through and tested each of these tools I used three main criteria in my evaluation Cost Ability to Customize Overall features… Read more →
