SAP Business Warehouse could have been better. There is room for improvement from a technical perspective. So, from a technical perspective, when we are upgrading a Business Warehouse server or we are migrating from one place to another, the capability required for this upgradation has many manual activities. It took us around a month to streamline our server. Let’s say there are some transaction codes. Transaction code is a set of programs, and when you want to run a program from the backend, you need to hit the transaction code. It is called a T-code. So during the upgrade, many transaction codes get affected, and as a security consultant, it is my responsibility to recheck those transaction codes which are affected. Sometimes more than 100 codes may get affected, sometimes 500, and sometimes more as well. So, it takes a hell lot of time to integrate them again. That is a limitation or defect within the SAP Business Warehouse. SAP Business Warehouse should come up with proper solutions. Upgradation is an automatic activity. It should happen by itself. We just need to initiate it, and the backend SAP server is automatically upgraded. But it should handle the transactional code as well. They should not get absolutely, and any authorization object should not get deleted from the transaction codes. So, that functionality SAP Business Warehouse should come up with.

While other solutions may offer more flexibility, SAP BW stands out as an all-in-one solution, especially for clients using SAP's backend systems like ERP and CRM. It is a logical choice for organizations seeking a comprehensive data warehousing solution tailored to their SAP ecosystem. Before HANA, SAP Business Warehouse's ETL functions were basic compared to competitors, fulfilling their job but lacking sophistication. However, with HANA technology, there has been a significant improvement. Now, we can work with real-time data warehousing, breaking the traditional paradigm of nightly data updates. HANA enables real-time data integration, a substantial advancement in SAP's data warehousing capabilities. By using online database replication, SAP Business Warehouse provides real-time integration of data from multiple sources into the data warehouse. With BW's modeling and transformation features, raw data becomes actionable insights, presented in user-friendly formats, aiding informed decision-making. SAP Business Warehouse's data modeling capabilities have significantly improved our decision-making processes. By leveraging features like Core Data Services and HANA graphical calculation views, we can model data closely to SQL standards and transform it effectively for reporting needs. This enables us to have real-time data in a structured environment optimized for reporting, providing insights that were previously difficult to obtain from transactional systems. If you are considering using SAP Business Warehouse, my advice would be to let the business lead the project, not IT. Overall, I would rate SAP Business Warehouse as an eight out of ten.

The initial setup is pretty simple. You just have to complete the step-by-step book from SAP. It's very simple. I'd rate the ease of setup eight out of ten. The deployments are manageable every week, so if it's for the simple change, it's weekly. We divide our changes into minor, medium, and major. Minor deployments go every week, major ones go biweekly, and then the major change is monthly or once every two months. How long it takes depends upon the objects that you're sending and the number of objects that you're sending, and the changes that you're sending. There is a max of six hours of downtime when you have a big change going in, however, when you have a minor change every week, it's under an hour. You only need one resource to handle deployment. There is regular maintenance required. On the BW side, an average team size of ten is good. Depending upon the complexity, it might increase. It depends client to client. You can't put a number on that since it all depends on the number of modules implemented and the number of reports available. On the support range, it's a medium-scale. If there is only BW support, a minimum of three and a maximum of five resources are necessary. It's only for BW, not any other integration reporting tool. Just for BW, about three resources is enough, however, for BW.
