Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I like the cost-benefit ratio, meaning that it is as easy to use as it is powerful and well-performing.""Redshift's Excel features are handy. Redshift spectrum allows you to directly query the data on an Excel sheet. Now, SQL Server also allows this, but Redshift has many more features.""The most valuable feature is the scalability, as it grows according to our needs.""Setup is easy. It's a fast solution with machine learning features, good integration, and a good API.""I find the most valuable features to be the MPP style of processing, which mostly all of the data warehouses provide. The ability to integrate all other AWS services, such as NSS and S3, with little effort is very helpful. The service is well maintained, there are update patches frequently.""Has a very user-friendly SQL editor and it's very easy to use the connectors.""It is quite simple to use and there are no issues with creating the tables.""The initial setup is easy."

"Having the back-end data set with the right information is the best qualification for this solution.""The features that I have found most valuable are its capabilities to connect to Excel and to slice and dice.""In terms of stability, comparatively, the solution is quite stable.""The solution has functionality that makes it easy for end-users to readily extract data directly from Business Warehouse into Excel and carry on their analysis on their own.""I like that it integrates to open-source.""The most valuable aspect of the solution is the integration with SAP ERP.""With the technical support, the response has been pretty good from the SAP side."

Cons
"Improvement could be made in the area of streaming data.""The refreshment rate of data reaching Redshift from other sources should be faster.""In our experiments, the handling of unstructured data was not very smooth.""It takes a lot of time to ingest and update the data.""There are too many limitations with respect to concurrency.""Amazon should provide more cloud-native tools that can integrate with Redshift like Microsoft's development tools for Azure.""This solution lacks integration with non-AWS sources.""We recently moved from the DC2 cluster to the RA3 cluster, which is a different node type and we are finding some issues with the RA3 cluster regarding connection and processing. There is room for improvement in this area. We are in talks with AWS regarding the connection issues."

"More integration with Microsoft Office products (not just Excel) would be helpful.""I would like to see a different end solution in order to read the data and attract internal users.""In the next release, my suggestion would be to have user-friendly interfaces and performance issues be addressed.""It's a product that is at the end of life so they will not improve it anymore.""SAP Business Warehouse could integrate better with other ETL tools.""We are very unhappy with technical support. First of all, they send their sales agents or pre-sales agents and most of them who don't know the solution as a properly trained tech would. We have an on-site SAP representative who is supposed to help us with our high priority and production issues, and they're not satisfactory to say the least.""A few things which are missing include the visualization of reports. That's where your costs and licensing become heavy. When it comes to this database compared Microsoft Warehouse, it's an expensive solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The part that I like best is that you only pay for what you are using."
  • "My customers have implementations that cost about $500 a month for a very small one. I also have a customer with a monthly invoice of about $25,000 USD."
  • "At the moment, pricing is a little bit on the higher side, although it depends on the size of the company."
  • "The price of the solution is reasonable. According to the RA3 cluster particularly, it provides 128 GB of storage with only four nodes. If you can manage your computations processes with the help of materialized views and proper queries. I think the IP clusters are very useful and overall fair for the price."
  • "This solution implements the pay-as-you-use model, so no license. Pricing could be cheaper."

    Overview

Amazon Redshift is a fast and powerful, fully managed, petabyte-scale data warehouse service in the cloud. Customers can start small for just $0.25 per hour with no commitments or upfront costs and scale to a petabyte or more for $1,000 per terabyte per year, less than a tenth of most other data warehousing solutions.

Traditional data warehouses require significant time and resource to administer, especially for large datasets. In addition, the financial cost associated with building, maintaining, and growing self-managed, on-premise data warehouses is very high. Amazon Redshift not only significantly lowers the cost of a data warehouse, but also makes it easy to analyze large amounts of data very quickly.

Amazon Redshift gives you fast querying capabilities over structured data using familiar SQL-based clients and business intelligence (BI) tools using standard ODBC and JDBC connections. Queries are distributed and parallelized across multiple physical resources. You can easily scale an Amazon Redshift data warehouse up or down with a few clicks in the AWS Management Console or with a single API call. Amazon Redshift automatically patches and backs up your data warehouse, storing the backups for a user-defined retention period. Amazon Redshift uses replication and continuous backups to enhance availability and improve data durability and can automatically recover from component and node failures. In addition, Amazon Redshift supports Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC), SSL, AES-256 encryption and Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) to protect your data in transit and at rest.

As with all Amazon Web Services, there are no up-front investments required, and you pay only for the resources you use. Amazon Redshift lets you pay as you go. You can even try Amazon Redshift for free.

Reporting, analysis and interpretation of business data are crucial to preserve and enhance the competitive edge of companies by optimizing processes and enabling them to react quickly and in line with market needs. SAP Business Warehouse (SAP BW) provides tools and functions that enable companies to attain these goals. In SAP BW, you can integrate, transform, and consolidate relevant business information from productive SAP applications and external data sources. SAP BW provides you with a high-performance infrastructure that helps you evaluate and interpret data. Decision makers can make well-founded decisions and identify target-orientated activities on the basis of the analyzed data.
